Callaway X-Forged

Legendary clubmaker Roger Cleveland has raised the bar once again with the 2008 X-Forged Wedges. Designed with input straight from Tour players, these wedges provide better players with all the elements they demand from their scoring clubs. Constructed from soft 1020 carbon steel for incredible feel, the clubs also feature a tighter heel-toe radius that provides increased versatility from anywhere around the green. On selected 56- through 64-degree models, the aggressively-sized Mack Daddy Grooves are designed at the maximum depth and width for tour-level spin, trajectory and distance control.

Features:

  • Forged 1020 carbon steel allows for exceptional touch and feel around the greens
  • On select 56- through 64-degree models, Mack Daddy Grooves are aggressively-sized at the maximum depth and width for tour-level spin and control
  • On select models, the C-Grind relieves the heel, toe and trailing edge for more versatility and improved turf interaction
  • Multiple loft/bounce angle combinations range from 48 degrees to 64 degrees

I won't vote yet because I haven't purchased but these are really nice looking and will replace my TM Rac wedges starting with the 60* with the C grind. Beauty of a wedge and the grind seems like it'll be good as is. Even though it has 10* of bounce it sits pretty low when opened up. I also like the stock golf pride grip they come with (at least at my store) instead of a Callaway grip.

Just got a matching set of gap, sand, and lob.

Best wedges for sale on the golf store rack for this year.

Get the vintage finish.

Supe job Roger Cleveland. Best Callaway wedge to date.

I am I thought Vokey's were the best for years!

Bye Bob, Thanks Roger!

As a mid handicap golfer, these wedges fit my scoring needs and ability better than other wedges I've tried.

I used to play the Vokey spin milled, which I had no reason to take out of my bag other than to try the new Callaways. And though neither is better or worse than the other in my opinion, the Callaways stayed in my bag because they check better than the vokey (at least for my swing, which takes very little divot).

The Vokey put more backspin on the ball (which was cool), but not being a player who can regularly put spin on the ball or even try to for that matter, I decided to go for a club that is more inclined to check and stop, rather than spin. It also seems the Callaway launches higher and easier (comparing the same loft and bounce of both wedges).

Everything else being equal, when I put the same swing on both wedges, I get bounce and stop with the Callaway, and backspin with the Vokey. And the former just suits my game and ability more.

I have the 52* (bent to 53*) and the 60* with the C grind and MD Grooves. It's true what they say, they sure do tear up balls, but after about 15 rounds and lots of range practice they stop tearing, but still back up. I've backed up everything from a full wedge, to bunker shots, to flop shots! Gotta love them! Little bit of rust starting to show up on the vintage finish about 3 months into it.

I have the 52, 56, 60 and 64. Rotate them depending on the necessary bag setup that day.

IMO, they are not necessarily better or worse than the X-Tours. I'm a scratch that plays competitively and I found that the leading edge on the X - Forged was a little too sharp. Grooves were the same. I love the C-Grind and that is an improvement, but I'm more of a Driver/Slider to a Digger and that leading edge on the X - Forged was definitely sharper than the X - Tour that I loved. I had my local grinder do some magic and it's been no problem since.

Another thing that I love about the X - Forged is the option of the 64 degree wedge. Kudos. I have been to the Pelz school and they heavily teach using that X - Wedge whenever appropriate. I appreciate that offering. I also like the vintage/raw look. It's just that stupid sharp leading edge grabs! Grooves are the same, look is the same, feel is the same.

Hope this helps.

Started out with these in the bag for 2008, and they were great.

The Cleveland CG 14's did knock them out of the bag in September.

I find the Cleveland's more accurate, with better control.

Hi,

My 54 and 58 / 9 back ups (config. see sig please) will arrive next week; just curious as i try to switch from Vokey wedges set up (performed well) to either mixed Mizuno/Callaway wedges or straight Callaway only wedges except PW (undecided so far) in order to arrive at same feel of forged ones.

The change to Mizuno irons recently which was lights on ref. feel like butter and the casted Vokey did not match those sweet Mizuno irons and therefore, different feel as it comes to pitching / chipping with Mizuno PW and / or castedVokey GW

Lets see;

got the 56 and 60 with MD grooves a few months ago. Feels very solid, generates a ridculous amount of spin. over the weekend i flew a green which slopes towards the fairway. from behind the hole, 35 yard pitch to a downhill green, the ball actually spun back uphill.

The spin can be hard to manage though, so if you're already spinning the ball alot, might be wise not to get the MD grooves. On full swings i have to aim for the top of the flag. Also the grooves really chew up the cover on anything more than a quarter swing.

Just bought a set of 52*, 60* and 64*. Had the 60* bent to 58*. C grind on the 60* and MD grooves on both 60* and 64*. I've only been out on the range and I must say they feel absolutely amazing. I used Nike SV satin last year and these feel much better. The MD grooves really tear up the ball. Have been soaking them in salt water to rust faster. Can't wait to try them out on the course.

love mine, don't care if they eat balls. I blame it on the balls!

After a year's use (75 games and I use the 60* quite a bit) I noticed the MD grooves wear a bit and stop chewing the balls as bad as when brand new. Still gives lots of spin though.

I wonder if the nonMD 60* would be better?

Great wedges though . Love the C Grind. I miss a lot of greens and use my 60* quite a bit off of hard thin lies and have no problem using it to hit the ball close.

Was playing Vokey Oil Cans and I could get those to stick and move maybe a foot. With these wedges I have hit a 52* wedge out the the sand from 100 yards out and got the ball to back up 20 feet. These things are sick when it comes to spin. Will be in the bag for a lot longer than my Vokeys were.

Hi,

I agree, these X-Forged Vintage wedges are sick, have the 52, 56 and 60* that have replaced my Mizuno MP-T Black Ni.

The thing I like most is that I don't SHANK these wedges.

For some reason, with MP-T and previous wedges, especially SW, I tended to always hit towards hosel and occasionally hit shanks, one day I had about 5 shanks.

Not sure if it's the longer hosel so more weight in the heel, or D6 swingweight, but touch wood, still no shanks in 3 months and hit most shots close to centre of face.

Yesterday on my par 5 10th, your shot to green is below you and sloping front to back, barely 15 meteres deep where pin was and got a LW pitch of about 55 metres to check up and finish 2 feet from pin.

I love this wedge set and probably will buy another set as spare.

Cheerz :) :D ;)

I love these wedges !

I have a 50, 54 & 60 the latter 2 with C grind n MD grooves,

So much control on a wide range of shots from fairways, bunkers and rough. Callaway have got it right with these babies, love the shape the feel and the playability of them.

The MD grooves can be a bit of a hand full in very wet weather but appart from that there fine.

I was looking for my first sand wedge and was intrigued by the Callaway lineup so I tried this out in a 56 along with a Cleveland CG 14 and a Slazenger Vapor wedge.

Of the three, this one performed the worst for me and I found it much easier to launch the other ones higher than this. Perhaps it's just not built for beginners like me.

I'm about to replace my wedges and have been looking at these but I dont believe they have the 56-60 available without MD grooves in left handed. Im probably going to order them anyway, switch to a less spinny ball like a Bridgestone or Srixon and put like px 7.0's in them to get them heavy and hopefully combat some of the spin.
