Anyone try the new LA Golf gold series shaft compared to the DJ signature series?

Recommended Posts

Interested in both of these shafts.

Just trying to get an idea based off others info that have tried both.

Thanks.

I was fit for the DJ but ended up with the A Series once I took it outside to a range with a launch monitor.

One was easier to control both height and shot shape outdoors , one wasn’t.

I was speaking the LA Golf customer service about their older Tour Blue/Red/White AXS shafts when I was looking  at the Red. They said the A Series mid is (obviously) their mid launch shaft and closest to the old red. The DJ shaft is also mid launch, but is counterbalanced.

The comparisons sound similar to the Mitsubishi Tensei Blue vs their counterbalanced Orange.

The A Series already has a high launch, which is where I thought the Gold series would fit. I have no idea where Gold sits, but if A series is the traditional low/mid/high and DJ is counterbalanced, I think Gold is emphasizing a smoother "entire shaft kick." Similar to a classic blueboard? Most of LA Golf shafts are quite stiff in the butt then soften out. Gold likely has a softer butt section. I can't think of any other profile archetypes LA Golf would think they need to offer.

They list tip/mid/butt stiffness on the specs on their site. A-Mid 60 S is same stiffness as Gold.

I see that. There is a lot of good information there. I'm sure their data is accurate, but it doesn't correlate 1:1 when swinging.

According to their notes, a mid 60x is equally stiff with less torque than a Bryson Series X shaft. I've hit both of those that they feel quite different in the opposite direction. I would have never guessed an A series Mid is on paper less torque than Bryson series. My DJ series shaft feels much looser at the tip than the Bryson series. Though the site lists one as a 9 and one as a 10. If Bryson is a 10 tip stiffness, I'd place DJ at a 7. But this is all where I interpret within my swing. This makes it very difficult to articulate the difference in the shafts.

Where I do like the stiffness data is how it shows the relation between parts of the shaft.

Either way, I'm intrigued by the Gold. I hope vendors have it with them during demo days in the next couple months.

They don't have any shafts that are 10 on tip stiffness. I think you're reading it wrong, it's listed tip-mid-butt.

Look on golf shaft reviews, they have EI profiles for all four.

I may pick up a Gold 55(5) after watching this.

I am very keen to try gold after this. My normal shape is a straight fade playing Bryson Series. DJ series sees a little straighter flight with more that will turn over quite a bit to the left on misses. I am more right biased with driver than this golfer, but it was fun to see someone with as "textbook" of a swing as him with similar results.

I knew this😅. Just went a little number blind comparing the T/M/B data and inversed them. Woops!

I've been using the Gold for a few weeks now. Coming from the Bryson Series, I can compare the two. Swinging driver about 108 using a Callaway TD Max 9 deg head, stated loft/draw setting. Sea level in the perpetually humid South.

Swing Context:

I get along very well with the current Diamana BB and Graphite Design AD DI has always been a winner in fairway woods. Ventus Red TR also plays well IF I am releasing powerfully that day. Ventus Black is a very difficult shaft for me to time up. I also am not a fan of Project X Hzrdus Black. Generally, descending stiffness profiles are good choices for me, fitting well into LA Golf, Modus 120, and Project X LZ iron shafts. My largest swing fault is dragging the handle through impact, so my main effort is in Nicklaus's "you can never release too early" mantra. Tempo and transition are faster than average.

Feel:

They have closely related profiles. Gold's B/M/T is Ultra Stiff/Medium/Medium whereas Bryson Series is Ultra Stiff/Stiff/Stiff. Bryson in 65X is extremely stout, and much firmer than Gold in X flex. When I make good contact with the Bryson, the ball really flies, but I am much more aware of my drivers clubhhead location in Bryson Series stiff vs. X flex. Gold Series in X is about equal to Bryson in stiff. The handle sections feel almost identical. Though, the lower half loads quite smoothly in the Gold. I can feel the load in Bryson series, but there is a hint of "keeping the shaft tight to the ground." In Bryson, I can really feel the low trajectory kicking in. Gold will follow my swing no matter how high or low I want to hit. Neither shafts are as easy to turn over and square as Diamana BB.

Numbers:

A dozen shots, alternating 4 each, leaving in poorer strikes below. Captured on Full Swing Ion3 overhead camera. Average speed this day was 110.

Gold Series 65x

Carry: 268

Total: 287

Ball Speed: 161.8

Delivery: 2.1 In to out; Face Closed 1

Launch: 13.4

Backspin: 2648

Sidespin: 297

Apex: 101

Bryson Series 65s

Carry: 264

Total: 283

Ball Speed: 159.9

Delivery: 2.4 In to out; Face Open .5

Launch: 13.5

Backspin: 2651

Sidespin: 182

Apex: 97

Gold 65x and Bryson 65s give me very similar numbers. I saw slightly tighter dispersion with Bryson. Mishits with Gold carry similar distance but over draw. Mishits with Bryson are low, angry screamers. Both feel like the result of moving forward too much in the downswing and/or dragging the handle through impact. I had two misses with each that brought spin up to mid 4000s and an apex of ~145--both those high and stinky hit from too high face impact.

The low profile of Bryson shaft keeps the face about 1.5 degrees more open. Ultimately this leads to the same launch height, though equal closure would lend to a lower launch in Bryson series.

I'd like to get a hold of a Diamana BB to dive deeper into that comparison. It feels like the Diamana is one of those base point shafts that many players can relate data. I also have the DJ and A Series shaft to compare at a later date. As of now, I am gaming the Gold. Though the Bryson Series continues to have a way of returning to the bag.
