Mizuno Pro 245 Iron Equivalent

Question for the forum.

Last year I bought my first set of new irons (Mizuno Pro 245 w/DG S300s) since I bought my Titleist 714 AP2's w/ C-Tapers). I know totally different feel, but I've lost swing speed the last couple of years and needed a softer shaft and had to drop 1/2 a flex (the old clubs were S+).

I'm looking for a second set of irons that are similar for a home down south/travel set. I know the right way to do this is to just replicate my bag and get a 2nd set of 245 Pros. However the $1,600 price tag for 4-GW is just not in the budget.

I priced out reshafting my Titleist 714s with DG S300s, but by the time I buy the shafts I'm in for $300+ tax for the shafts. I'm then looking at another $300 for the pull and re-shaft and another $150 for the GP MCCs I play. If I can pick something up for under $1,000 that is new but a year or two models old I'd be happy. Even lightly used. Anything on eBay seems to have the new DG 120s. Which I don't want.

Any thoughts on a set/model I should look at. I saw a JPX 923 Pro set, but didn't move on it fast enough. I don't even know, would they be similar.

Originally, when I got better, my 1st forged irons were the JPX 800 Pro's in 2012. I got better and moved to the AP2s by 2014 when they came out and only left the bag last season.

Titleist GT2, Motore Speeder 661

Titleist GT2 16.5*, or Titleist GT2 15* both w/Tensei Blue 75 (sometimes I switch a Rombax Type-X 75S)

Ping G430 (22*), Tensei AV Blue 80HY
Mizuno Pro 245, 4-GW, DG S300
Vokey Spin Mill, 56 (bent to 55), 60
Scotty Cameron Phantom 7

I got fit into some 245s awhile back, I hit the Ping i530s, Callaway Apex AI200s, Titleist T200s, and P790s all pretty similar in size, lofts, all are hollow bodies. Kinda personal preference from there all have good and bad.

I ended up going to Players CB irons for better gapping but if you need some more punch those are all good sets.

if you want to go a year or 2 older look for MP 225s, Ping i525s, previous gen p790s or T200s

You have second home and travel but can’t pony up $1600 for irons? Cmon man!

And there is the usual jackass!

I bought a whole new bag last year top to bottom, then a new house and furniture for that house. Obviously you can’t understand why I may not want to pony up the full amount for the same exact set. Must be another Keyboard warrior. Can’t imagine what your social media must be like.

You can get a used set of 245s on here for probably $700-800. Fairly often with steel shafts.

I just picked up a set on eBay with Recoils for $715.

my issue has been trying to find the DG S300’s. Do I need to be a member to buy or just sell on here. Never did either on here.

For the BST, you can buy at any time.  Selling you can do once you pass 75 posts or if you join/pay a fee before you get to 75.

As for irons, if you want to stay in Mizuno, but don't need them to be 245s, the JPX 923 Tour is an awesome iron, but didn't catch on very well, so there are a bunch of new or almost new sets going for pretty cheap.  2nd Swing currently has two mint condition sets 4-PW with S300 for $700.

I would’ve thought 245s were more like T150 or P770.  I think the profile of the above models is a bit of a bigger head with More offset, but may be mistaken.  Certainly agree in concept to go with an analogous Titleist or Taylor made iron. I think the AI irons have too much of an explosion effect on solid shots that will sail over the green.

I think if you just study the lofts on those clubs you’d be suprised.

I’d compare my MP 243s very similar to the T150s. Very similar blade length, sole, and COG they were very close in my fitting- almost exact same lofts

mp245 has longer blade length and can honestly be played by about anyone from 10-25 hdcp similar to a p790. Not an aggressive amount of offset but it is definitely a PD iron. Low spin, stronger lofted closer to a GI than players for sure

I would have said the same thing and then later thought maybe there’s a reason dude has a second home bc he doesn’t buy dumb stuff like the rest of us.

I play ZX5s and the 245 was second when I got fitted last year for what’s it’s worth. Not sure how available used sets are but might be worth a look. T200s and P790s had an obvious flyer feel to them for me, felt good, distance was all over the place tho. ZX5 and 245 were much more consistent.

Might not have a second home once he dives into the world of WRX BST? 😂

As for costs I see dg s300 pulls on ebay for $100ish. You might want to put up some WTB ads to see if you can get similar deals and avoid paying taxes. To do the work you can always shop around. It seems you have two locations to look for shops. It's just labor and there's no universally accepted rate so It will just depend on the shop.   Or you can just learn to DIY it. Pulling steel is easier than graphite.

245’s have been out a year, so used sets are available at reasonable prices.  Mizuno 225’s and MP20 HMB are the prior two versions and will be similar, although standard lofts have gotten stronger over time.  Maltby TS1-IM is a similar construction and available in multiple shafts if you prefer new at a very reasonable price point.

are the 225’s just the older version of the 245’s?

back in 2012-2015, I knew all this stuff. But since I got my 714 AP2, I never had a reason to change irons. The older set I had were JPX 800 Pros which were only two years older than the 714s. I used them as a travel set. Has a slightly different setup but hit both sets exactly the same and never had issues. That’s another reason it took me 11 years to buy new clubs.

Yes, essentially. They always make small “tweaks” but it’s hardly noticeable.
