Any modern driver that is similar to the classic Taylormade r7 Quad TP with Speeder 757 shaft?

You're correct.  Why did I think that the superquad had 6?  Lol.  Good call.

The addition of Super by the marketing department did it's job 😉

It is not surprising to hear that driver holds up with a modern shaft.  IDK what it is with that era of Taylormade stuff but they were just so easy to swing (Or it was my back and hips were not destroyed 18 years ago...) 😩

Second day with my old R7QTP/ Silver 125 70TX,  and still bombs. The new stuff is way finickier. This thing is short and heavy, at 44", head is 213g, shaft @ 80g. More confident swings, so it's longer with more middles. Who's to say the old standard of 43" is outdated? Short Fatties Untie!

I think the modern driver length is one of the most game hurting things in the sport these days.   No one average height/build needs a 45.75 Driver considering the average handicap is around 15.   A 15 would mean they rarely hit the center of the face & the more length you add the shaft the more the likelihood of a miss happens.   Please Note I am talking Average Height Build/Handicap.  I know low single digits & of course taller folks can make use of the longer drivers.  But those are NOT Average Golfers.

Took a couple clubs to one of the local 2nd Swing shops for trade in.  Wandered around looking at what they had; knew they had a Mizuno STG 440 with a TiNi, and especially relevant here, an R7 Quad and an R7 425.

Walked out of there with the R7 425 over the Quad, largely for one reason:  I would have had to reshaft the Quad, but the 425 came with a real Diamana Redboard.  At $60 of the store credit I'd just gained, I felt it was worth the purchase, even if it's just a trial and return situation.

15 years ago, the Redboard wouldn't be in my zipcode, but in my older years, yes, I think I'll give it some run.  🙂

R7 Quad 425 vs the original.  Does the 425 more or less line up with the OG, or is it a different beast entirely?

I never had the 425. Always wondered. Sounds like it'd be worse for me. Gotta say, that OG R7 was close to perfection. Is it true that Rory never played it??

Probably. He was Titleist first, Nike second, and TM third. When that was released he wasn't technically on staff with anyone at that point either. So it is likely he may have tried it during a fitting/demo session but it would have been illegal, as deemed by the USGA and R&A for him to be paid to use it.

I had a SQ460, one of the longest clubs I've ever used. have a 425TP, great club, more  accurate than SQ. important that weights fit what you like, the one i bought has a daft setup. The MP650 was mentioned here and 2nd how good it is. not a bomber but might be the most accurate big Ti head i swung. Still in the bag. Have Parydym T heads as my upgrade to all these and i very much see them as today's variant on these types of heads.

Regripped my club thus morning for a trip to a heated range in the metro area.  They have a shot tracer, measure ball speed and angle, wanted to see how it stacked up.

And I get the moron award, I left it leaned up against the wall in my family room, just outside my "golf room."

Ugh

Finally got a chance to hit my R7 425 at a range, which has shot tracer and some launch monitor data (ball speed and launch angle, but not spin).  Brought my SpeedZone with me as a comparison.

A few things that stood out...  The R7 kept up with the SpeedZone for ball speed pretty well.  I found I could vary the trajectory fairly well.  The Diamana Redboard 63X gave me no issues.  And, what I found particularly interesting, I've re-proven to myself that I don't gain anything using a 45" driver.  Comparing full length shots to shots where I choked up on the grip, I saw no reduction in ball speed.  Good hits, questionable contact, it was the same ball speed result.

I might mess with throwing the heavy weights forward to see what I get.  Probably going to cut it down at least a half inch, maybe ¾", as a start.

Great fun

Another R7 425 update...

First round of year yesterday.  Wind was fairly obnoxious, starting about 15mph, end with 20+ and gusting to 40.  Great fun.

The R7 gave me some excellent results, I was quite happy with it.  Tried it at full length, choked up roughly ½" to ¾" (such as you can guess on the course) and found the results better that way.  Distance was at least as good as what id been seeing the last month of the 2024 season.

Interestingly, the effective swingweight with my choking up didn't cause me problems.  I've swapped in an 8g weight I place of a 4g weight that came with the club, which gave me the D7 I've been playing the last couple years.  Normally I have trouble with D2-D3, especially with a sub-70g shaft, but this has been working great.  Will be cutting this down, and likely go with that lighter weight for now.

As things stand, this will be in the bag.

I've been mildly obsessing about the R7 Quad and R7 425, which is what happens when you've had one round so far, and then are unable to play the next two weeks.  Stupid MN weather.

Decided to dig into the always reliable Youtube review world 😁 to see what I could find.  Ran across a video  about three years old, comparing the R7 Quad to the SIM2 and one of the evil Titleist drivers.  Found it moderately interesting.  Results comparison image:

image.png.aab9b20e0c4677fd33faa494d4a36f11.png

Not going to pretend I'm taking this as gospel, but I *did* find it interesting, especially the lower spin results.  The std deviation for carry distance is higher, which I'd expect with a 400cc clubhead, but this particular gent hit it pretty well.

If anyone cares to watch the whole vid, here you go:

Another update...  the R7 425 has shown itself to be longer than anything else I might have considered to use in its place.  Distance is better overall, it's especially better into the wind (low spin!).  Really enjoying it.

If not for this thread, I'd not have considered this as an option.  Definitely recommend it for anyone not shy about sub-460cc clubheads.

Yeah, it definitely holds up. I picked up an extra R7QTP 9.5 with stock SE80 M5 shaft (monster) and the combo is much easier for me to hit than my TSR4 with anything in it. The ACCRA is low torque, heavy, with some mid-section flex, and the head is a bomber. Just works. I can get the TSR if I try, and maybe the occasional bomb is longer, but the oldie just takes so much less effort and is considerably more reliable. Embarassing but true.
