Muirfield Etiquette

I have played Muirfield 3 separate occasions and always enjoyed the midround lunch.  I never found it to be much of an issue honestly.  

 

However, the last time we were there (summer 2023) at least 2 groups took lunch on the back patio area as you walk into the locker room.  I know one group were guests as I spoke to them on the range.  The other may have been members.  I thought only 2 outside groups were allowed to play each day.  I could be wrong there though.  

 

In any event, if the weather is nice, and you are opposed to a coat and tie, that sure seemed like a cool thing to do.  They had sandwiches and beers and a grand time by all accounts.

My group is headed to Muirfield soon.  We're playing late morning, and traveling to St. Andrews after our round, so no lunch or dinner for us.

 

Some questions:

 

1.  When can we enter the property?  Can our hired van enter?  Purchasing some things from their shop and a good warm-up are desired.

 

2.  Can we enjoy a post-round drink?  Where, and must we wear coat & tie?

 

3.  What's to see in the 'Public Rooms?'  Is C & T worth the effort?

 

Really looking forward to the trip!!!

@gasjr We were in the same position as you; played late morning at Muirfield and didn’t stay for lunch as we had to head to St. Andrews, which does take a good 2 hrs. 

 

We arrived about an hour early before our tee time. We had our own car, and they had us park it then carted us to the clubhouse where we were greeted and welcomed by a hostess who provided us information/instructions about the day. They allow tour vans to pull up to the clubhouse to pick up and drop off golfers so you shouldn’t have any issues there.

 

They have a a full driving range and putting/chipping green available. Range was mats for us. There is a pro shop available to purchase items. You aren’t required to wear C&T to access the shop. It’s not very large and part of the shop is members-only but they have stock in back if you don’t find your item available on the racks.

 

You can have a post round drink on the patio; no C&T required. C&T is required inside in most areas except locker room and pro shop. 
 

Because we had to get on the road, we didn’t spend time in the public rooms so can’t comment on whether it’s worth it or not. Will say the locker room had some great pictures of the club’s historical moments. 

All in all, it was a fantastic experience. Muirfield oozes history and prestige and if time permitted, I would have liked to have done the C&T. The only negative experience for me was having a young caddie (university student) out for his first round of the season. Needless to say, quite a few reads were wrong, worst of which was a 10 ft birdie putt on 2 that he read breaking a cup right when instead it broke a cup left.  Nice kid but the wrong reads were very frustrating throughout the round.
