North Berwick Dinner Recommendations

Recommended Posts

We have a group of 4 of us that are traveling to the North Berwick area in August this year. We're playing 36 most days, but we're staying in North Berwick at a B&B each night. We'd like recommendations for places to eat for dinner. We'll have a rental car and do not mind driving a little for good food. Here's our itinerary:

Saturday: 18 at Kilspindie at 3 pm

Sunday: 18 at North Berwick at 2:20 pm

Monday: 36 at Luffness New, 2nd tee time at 3 pm

Tuesday: 36 at Muirfield, 2nd tee time at 4:10 pm

Wednesday: 18 at North Berwick at 3 pm

Thursday:  36 at Gullane #1 & #2, 2nd tee time at 2:40 pm

Friday: 18 at Gullane #3 and then 18 at Longniddry at 3 pm

Saturday: 18 at Glenn and then 18 at Dunbar at 3:30 pm

Sunday: Fly back to U.S.

We're open to all food types and would like a mix of casual and fine dining. Local is preferred and anything that is unique to the area is ideal. Price isn't really a determining factor, but we'd like to mix it up and some days we're fine with something quick and casual after playing 36.

Are any of the restaurants at our courses worth staying at for dinner?

Any other tips for breakfast or lunch places or cool pubs?

Thanks in advance your suggestions!

We ate at Osteria, Grange and Nether Abbey and liked them all.   We also just hit a take out fish and chip shop in town that was really good for lunch.

I would assume your B&B will have breakfast.   Scottish breakfasts are great.

i will say that you may need reservations as many places were full when just trying to walk in or had bookings already planned.   I would recommend getting them.

It's been since 2019 but . . .

Cucina Amore - if the family in this picture still owns it, I recommend it highly.  We had three meals there because the first one was so welcoming and the food so good.

The Lobster Shack on the wharf was incredible.  Bella Italia was extremely underwhelming. Breakfast we would pick up baked good at various spots, some you need to get there early, and the Buttercup was a cute cafe.

IMG_3985.jpeg.a07a85dc5bfe01d19f933c894e23c08e.jpegThe Puffin and Nether Abbey (acts as local pub for folks on the Hill) in North Berwick are good. North Berwick clubhouse is good. The Chinese takeaway on Quality Street is decent. Zanzibar does good breakfast. For drink, but no food…Auld Hoose.

The Main Course in Gullane is excellent. Old Clubhouse (good hang) and Mallard are good and the Bonnie Badger is very good, but expensive….all in Gulllane. The main Gullane clubhouse is good. Since you are playing #1 you are allowed in.

Grace of India in Aberlady is a decent Indian…bring your own alcohol.

Waterside Inn in Haddington is a nice spot.

Ciao

Highly recommend a trip into Edinburgh to wander around and grab a bite to eat and drink. Really enjoyed Greyfriars Bobby for food and drinks at The Last Drop. Also try to sneak in 9 holes at Musselburgh Old with hickories. Quick and easy round with a ton of history.

We might try to add Musselburgh on Wednesday morning before our afternoon round at North Berwick.

That's what we did. Teed of around 10 at Musselburgh and had plenty of time to have lunch/shop at the NB clubhouse before our 3pm tee time.

The pro shop is by the first tee, don't recall merchandise in the clubhouse.

My wife remembers eating in the upstairs bar/lounge in the clubhouse very well (I didn't remember eating, see above, lol) and she says it was really good! I know I had a scotch . . .

Everyone in the clubhouse was first class.

Edit:  everyone in the pro shop was as well - even had a member here reach out wondering if I'd pick up a putter head cover for him - they helped me sort out what he wanted.  We did our shopping on a different day than we played - the British Senior Am was going on at the time and we took in some of the competition.

Semantics, I meant that we had enough time to eat and shop on the NB property. To clarify, we ate lunch upstairs in the clubhouse and shopped at the pro shop which is a standalone building in between the 18th green and 1st tee. It is next to the warm up nets, starters hut and a random building that I don't quite remember but could have stored the push carts and I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong.

I miss barstool putting at Ducks (now the Leddie) 😢

I will be in North Berwick next Saturday after a few games at Silloth. Scheduled to play NB and Craigielaw…a new one for me.

Newbie here.

I am a little late to the thread but living in Dunbar and a member at Longniddry I can probably add to the suggestions.  @El Gringo has highlighted many in the area, especially Gullane.  To be honest you will be able to eat well in North Berwick without any repeat visits however of you want to have a look around the county then I can suggest:

The Creel in Dunbar (fish restaurant) but book ahead.

Craigielaw Golf Club has a decent restaurant.

Both pubs in East Linton do good pub grub (Crown & Kitchen and Linton Hotel & Steakhouse).  Both of these have rooms too.

The Longniddry Inn does basic but very filling pub grub - the portions are large.

The Open Arms in Dirleton is good.  I haven't eaten in the Castle Inn but it seems to be OK.
