JPX 925 Hot Metal sound

Recommended Posts

I picked up a set of these in the off season and have not yet had them on course (I’m in NY) but I hit them outside for the first time off mats the other day. The sound of the 6 and 7 irons was rough to say the least. Kind of a loud hollow plastic sound. The better the strike the worse the sound. I previously hit them a few times on an indoor sim using real balls and didn’t notice anything with the sound so I’m hoping range balls might have been the cause. I don’t usually get too bothered by sound and feel because I know what to expect but the sound these were making at the range was unlike any iron I’ve ever played. If anyone has any on course feedback on sound I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

What was the temperature? When it's below 50 F, I think that both feel and sound is pretty bad in all clubs.
I have the 921 HM in 6 and 7, and I don't think the noise is bad in the summer.

Did you experience something different in your shorter clubs?

Thanks for your thoughts. It was around 60 degrees. The shorter clubs didn’t sound nearly as bad as the 6 and 7. I think the cavity design of your 921’s is better in that the badge is closer to the face. At least I think so. I’m hoping this was just a one time issue as I moved to these from T200’s for a little more forgiveness and I loved the performance but for the sound. I would think if the sound was always bad it would’ve sounded bad indoors but I don’t know.

One of the YT reviews (Club Champion I believe) mentioned this. Mizuno used multi-material construction with tungsten in the the  4-7 irons and they noted the sound / feel difference when comparing the PW to the 7 iron. Your experience seems to match theirs.

I did recently pick up a set of the 925 HM's but have not gave them a proper test yet....

Thanks. I’ll look for that review. Hope the 925’s work for you. Like I said — I have zero complaints on the performance of them.

I've owned a few different versions of the Hot Metal irons, and while they don't sound like a thick faced iron, they sound better than many other similar irons (such as Ping G425).

A soft ball is a must with irons like those, if you are concerned about sound.  Chrome Soft, or similar.  No X balls.

Okay thanks. Good to know. I typically play ProV1 and hoping I don’t have to change balls. The range ball was some kind of Mizuno ball that I’m guessing is rock hard.

Thanks, looking forward to hitting them. Been a long time Ping G player, and the JPX / Hot Metal lineup has been the only iron I have been tempted by.  Like @Nessism said, they are definitely better feeling than my G425's, but that was just in the booth. Need to get them out on the course for some real testing.

I've hit them and they do make an unusual sound.

I hit the 7 iron indoors today at Golf Galaxy and I thought they sounded and felt pretty good (much better than the G440 7 iron I was hitting along side of it).

I totally agree with this but for me the 6 and 7 irons sound totally different outside. I had a chance to play 9 this weekend and I got the same hollow plastic sound on good strikes with the 6 and 7. It’s almost like the face is super thin and then with the hollow cavity and plastic badge you get this sound. Still can’t explain why it didn’t sound this way inside. I was using a Tour BX ball so maybe a softer ball would help.  Low strikes don’t make the sound and 8 thru P sound fine. Some say sound is feel but to me they feel fine. They just make this high pitched plastic sound. I have never changed clubs because of sound but I need to figure out what to do with these. I’m leaning toward keeping them because they are so easy to hit but the sound is pretty disappointing.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I am not willing to sacrifice feel or sound for performance. Please keep us posted on where you come out on this.

I gave these three chances on grass using my regular ball and I had to make a change. They are great performing irons (super forgiving) but I just couldn’t get use to the sound coming out of the longer irons.  Got fitted tonight and ended up going with the new 790’s.

Wow, good for you. I’m just curious, did you try the 925 hot metal pros at the same time you hit the regular hot metals? Did you notice a difference in sound between those two clubs?

I did not try the HMP’s. I probably should have. I was coming from T200’s, thought I needed bigger confidence inspiring heads, etc.  All the research I did after the fact suggests that the HMP’s sound better because of the smaller cavity that the plastic badge is covering. The old TXG YouTube channel mentions how much better the HMP’s sound. I saw in another thread you were looking at the HMP’s. Did you end up ordering them? The forgiveness of the 925 line is excellent in my brief time with them. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I have not ordered anything yet. I did buy a set of regular hot metals that are still new in the box but I was planning on exchanging them for hot metal pros (and special ordering them with the same shaft that comes in the regular hot metals, the Nippon 950gh Neo — I assume that’s the shaft that you had in your regular hot metals). Then today I went and got fitted for PXG 0311 XP‘s. That’s the subject of another thread. But now I’m questioning the shaft that I was fit into for those clubs, the MMT 105 stiff flex.  I really suck at buying new clubs. I’ve been playing the same clubs for the last 10 years, the AP1 710s, and I just can’t figure out how to replace them.

I had Project X IO shafts in my hot metals.  Good luck with your decision.  So many good options these days.

I just ordered some HMP's.  To me they sounded and felt fine.  I really disliked the sound of the Ping G440 irons.  Everyone is different, though.  Some may love the sound of the Pings and hate the HMP's.

Agreed.  Those g440s were a big disappointment in the sound department.
