It’s a sporting event, nothing more. Not everyone has to cheer for everyone in sports and while it may have been a little distasteful that should be his prerogative.

Except it’s not.  What he did is against the rules of the event set out by the tournament organizer and agreed to by all patrons who used a ticket.  That’s why he was ejected from the event.  Golf IS different than other sports in this regard, for good reason.

And the Ryder Cup reference is nonsense.  The Ryder Cup is a circus of drunken morons behaving badly.  Holding it out as what should be accepted as normal for golf is ridiculous.  But again, as said before in this thread by many, it seems to be the uncivilized society we live in today.

The only difference with golf is you’re outdoors on the actual course but you’re still paying $12 for a beer and $18 for a sandwich. I bet that those vague rules read the exact same at the waste management. Golf isn’t holier than any other sport as much as some want to pretend it is.

No, it’s a civilized event that expects decorum.  And yes, the rules are different at the WM, obviously.  And if you pay attention you’d have heard just about every pundit AND PGA Tour player say at one time or another, ‘it’s an interesting tournament, but we wouldn’t want that every week’.

And ‘holier than thou’?  Any more cliches ya wanna throw out?  Are they spending money ‘like a drunken sailor’?

IBTL. Not sure why some insist on arguing their opinions as facts, especially as the young man's behavior has zero to do with Rory not wanting much to do with the influencer/creator scene.

As pointed out Rory asked for the phone, the guy handed it over, and the attendance agreement is no heckling and the like. If you want to see people acting otherwise watch any of the other sports where fans can do and say as they please.

Would be nice if we could stick to reality for the discussion.

Nate: A few points here:

1. Can there be no exclamations of dislike to the golfers? Must we all smile and clap? Or is clapping and smiling okay, even when the player misses a two foot putt or blows a drive wide right out of bounds?

2. How to explain one of the most popular events on Tour, The Waste Management? It seems to me the Tour is teaching spectators to be as loud, drunk, and moronic as possible.

3. The Ryder Cup is the most viewed golf event and the spectator behavior, mostly the home fan base, is encouraged to be loud and, frankly, unwelcoming. I agree that the fan “experience”, probably since the War on the Shore, has gotten out of hand. Yet I see the players and caddies egging on the fans.

4. This may or may not be the Tour’s fault, but the Tour wants to integrate with LIV, the whole Golf but Louder theme?

5. How many golf influencers bemoan the genteel traditions of the game? And on Wednesday, before The Players, the Tour puts on an event for those very influencers. Hell, McIlroy is one of the founders of TGL where fan behavior is encouraged to be loud and disruptive.

My point is that professional golfers, the Tour, and the golf entertainment industry teach fans to behave more loudly and more rudely. Behavior taught is behavior learned.

Golf isn’t basketball or football. It’s different and that’s why I like it. Why does it have to have the same boorish buffoons yelling stupid crap like they’re at a nascar event?

as for the Ryder cup it’s gotten way out of hand and I feel this one will be a massive embarrassment from the American fans. The Bethpage crowd is nauseating (I play there all the time so I am one of them but know how to act)

NASCAR is so loud you cannot even hear the fans.  Soccer hooligans, or Boston Red Sox fans seems like a more appropriate comparison.

I agree that the WM and Ryder cup are the extreme outliers, and doesn't make it acceptable behavior for any tournament.

Fans should have some self-respect, and not act like clowns for attention.  They are watching a sport for entertainment.  They are not the entertainers.

Whatever other sport you want to compare it to I don’t care but the point is the same. Golf is different and don’t know why the buffoons want it to be like everything else.

I agree.  Funny/sad seeing people try to defend the poor behavior.

The golden rule used to be a thing.  And that sums it up  for the whole deal.

Cheering for someone vs heckling them for past failures is a whole galaxy apart. I cannot imagine actively saying something like that outloud , much less to a person like that.  Especially in the context of a person trying to be a pro golfer ( as this kid is) . Can you imagine the bad juju he just put on himself ?

At the end of the day , I’m not advocating for doing what Rory did.  But I understand it. Sometimes there’s no other option to make the situation stop. Nobody should have to endure verbal abuse.

I laugh at the thinned skin comment.  What people don’t consider is how much restraint he might have used.  He’s not a huge guy. But I’d bet he can handle himself. I assure you . Grabbing his phone wasn’t what his intrusive thoughts told him to do.  That was the deescalation option.  The intrusive thoughts are much more R rated. This is a guy who can swing a stick. 120 mph.  Draw the picture.  Context matters.

if a person came to your work and did what this kid did. Is that ok?  Would you walk around all day and listen to it ?  Doubt it. So why the double standard?

Well said! Sadly too many don't get it because they lack class and decorum.

If Rory wanted to be vindictive he could hire a bunch of these guys and make this kids college golf life miserable 🤣

🤣. Yep. That’s a very good point. And all the ones defending the kid now would cry victim then.   It’s that passive aggressive fake macho ism that drives me crazy. It’s prevalent in all things today. And I can tell you why it is so common.  🤣.  Because the behavior has been affirmed by both influencers , media , and finally laws. All in an effort to milk $ out of the system. Thrown away right and wrong.  In favor of the grift.

some think this is off topic. I say it’s not. Rory understands why influencers are horrible. He sees the fruits of their grift every day in his office space.  He’s been at it long enough to have seen it when it wasn’t half as bad.

Which immature kid of the two were you referring to? I mean sure the kid was wrong to make a left handed remark but it's hard to tell which one of these two was worse than the other. Should he have known better, probably, but least the kid is really still a kid, Rory is a grown man and should know better than to act out like this. He has just become so self entitled, immature and impetuous that it is unbelievable IMO.

As far as any charges for conversion, assault\battery or anything else....hey, he's rich so he's above the law right?

He's a college junior who will likely be playing on tour in a couple years. Not exactly a kid, and definitely not unaware of how you're expected to conduct yourself at an event.

I get that he is old enough to know better and I never said he wasn't but do you really think that a 20 year old is or should be at the same level of maturity as a 35 year old?  That would be a nice world, but it sure isn't the one I live in.

And please let's get real.. the comment was not that inflammatory. Only these prima donna PGA players (and other athletes) like Rory react so ridiculously to them.

All that said, I do agree that they were both wrong.

No, and the quote has been out there since it was yelled out to get attention.

What else was said or can you provide a link?

I can't find anything other than "just like 2011 at Augusta". Which is the basis of why I think Rory completely over reacted.

Which isn't what the guy I quoted had in quotes.

LOL, "overreacted"?  He was pretty cool about it in terms of attitude, temporarily taking the phone, probably not the best idea, but whatever.  It's over.

In what world would charges of any type be levied and for what exactly? It has nothing to do with being rich. There were no damages and only one person broke the rules of the tournament. The smart mouth, entitled college golfer.

If you're 35, that certainly explains a lot.
