Which would you choose on a budget? (Srixon, Tourstage, Honma)

Recommended Posts

I've got that itch. It's only a matter of time before I give in to my urges and buy yet another set of irons. I'm currently rotating a set of 2013 Yammy Tourmodel and Hogan PTx Pro irons. I have an additional two sets that never see the light of day. Need to give those away. The Yammys are great but I have to really be swinging well to get the most performance out of them. The Hogans I'm just bored with. I'd like to grab a more forgiving set that still has a players look on the cheap. At the moment, I'm looking at Srixon ztx-2s, Tourstage 701, 705 type M, and  Honma TW717. I'm leaning towards the ztx-2s since they have the tungsten in the longer irons and have conforming grooves. (No I don't play comps but I like the idea that they're still conforming none the less.) I've always liked the looks of the tourstage but fear they may not offer the extra help I'm after. I just stumbled on the TW717s this morning. Have done no research on those clubs yet but the fact that they can be sourced with Modus pretty easily is a plus. I don't care for pocket cavities (had some in the past and they felt weird on toe strikes) and don't like a club that is long heel to toe. So what say you bretheren?

Please define "budget" & "on the cheap"

What is your price point?

I picked up a set of Honma 737Vs irons for a good price, but not sure sub' $200 is possible with those. For the Vs model in this range, they have minimal offset and a pretty thin top line with added forgiveness without being a pocket cavity (I tried the TR20P and also wasn't a fan of the feel with the pocket cavity). For value, it's probably hard to beat the Honma TW range, from the 717 up to the 757, but obviuosly the earlier models will be more in your price range.

I'm not really familiar with the Srixon or Tourstages to be honest, so can't really comment on those.

Its hard to beat mid-teens player CB's  Honma tw7#7v's, OnOff 2015 Kuros, Bridgstone J15CB's, etc. the Yamaha inpres irons mentioned can also often be picked up for a song. If you know you'll need modus shafts though, Honma is probably your highest odds of finding a set already as you need them to be.  There are a lot of ebay sellers who are essentially proxy sellers for Rakuten and Mercari japan, but also consider proxy services like zenmarket or buyee, especially if you're buying multiple items. Ive seen sets of Honma tw717v's in the $110-$120 range, and 727 & 737v sets in the $140-$160 range. Even with shipping you should be able to stay in budget.

I have the 717V's , played them for a year and loved them. Thin topline, thin, soles, higher launch with great feel but long heel to toe, sneaky long for the lofts. They don't get a ton of time anymore but I'll never sell them.  Only Honma's I'd go after would be the 717 or 727.

I'd go with those 705 Type M's, essentially just a shallower cavity J40 and those were pretty darn good. I've no experience with Srixon's prior to the 745's.

Seriously biased here...but the 705-m's are wonderful. My favorite iron that I've ever owned.

I picked up 4-pw heads in excellent condition this year and they were extremely affordable (140 shipped).

I like your selection, but would recommend Yamaha Inpres irons of that time period.

I have a set of Yamaha already but want to try a different JDM brand. Have owned Srixon 765 and 785. Don't get along with the v-sole. The older models with traditional soles might be the ticket. Had a set of Bridgestone J15 DPF that were great but had a much larger profile than I like. Honma is the only brand I mentioned that I've never hit some iteration of. I really, really like the feel of my friends Miura Giken CB 1008 and plan on getting the TC 201s in the future. The 201s are some of the most breathtaking irons I've laid my eyes on.

The battle is on...Just ordered these heads to see which heads will go on the backup bag. Couldn't resist for the price. The question is whether I shaft them up with my preferred shafts or the s300 sensicore that I have...

Thought I'd follow up... ended up buying a set of Srixon Z-TX irons 5-PW with Nippon 950s. I purchased via Jauce which I have used in the past. The Japanese auctions have a lot of clubs in better condition than Ebay. There is plenty of Tourstage gear for cheap. I'll get a set of x-blades towards the end of the year. Need to move or donate some clubs. Five iron sets take up too much space. Now the shipping wait begins!

If you’ve used the later model ZX5/7 Srixons, I’d love to read a comparison.

To be honest, everyone should play blades. They give you the needed feedback and improve your ball striking. The ”hard to hit” claims are nonsense.

Would love such an older Miura set. It’s just difficult to find leftie versions with sensible shafts. Not a cheap thing to reshaft a full set.

I could do that. I've owned the 765 and 785 for short periods. Didn't love the v-sole. Oddly enough I like the Hogan v-sole. I'm hoping the v-tx is the same as the 765 with a more traditional grind.

Looking forward to hearing how you get along with the srixons. Put some Yamahas on your shortlist for your next set, these are pure...
