Petite Ladies Length Club Advice Needed!

Hi!

 

My GF has decided to take up golf - she has been out with me a few times and had a few lessons with an LPGA pro as well as going out on the course to watch the pro and I play together. The pro is more of a teacher than a club guru but we both think petite women's golf clubs would be good for my girlfriend. 

She is 5 Foot tall. Weighs 135 (got permission to post!) describes her legs as stronger than her upper body and with carry and roll after a couple of lessons and 4 or 5 range sessions is hitting a 7 iron with carry and roll about 100 yards.  

I found a very good condition used Adams Hybrid set for her on Ebay with the following womens specs: 

 

With her height, I was thinking of the following lengths: 

Driver: 42.5 Inches

Fairway Wood: 40.5 Inches

Long Hybrid: 38.5 Inches

Mid Hybrid: 36.5 Inches

Short Hybrid: 35.5 Inches

PW and SW: 34.5 Inches

Putter: 31.5 Inches.

 

I am also going to use the lightest undersize grips I can find as well. 

Any advice, thoughts or comments would be most welcome!

The lengths you describe are pretty much the same as my daughter uses and she is essentially the same size as your girlfriend.

I would try them out as is first.  
 

The issue would be swingweight.  Though you don’t know what swingweight would fit her, just cutting down the shafts would put them all over the place.  If you feel comfortable reshafting on your own, then problem Is solved.

 

Another option would be to buy a set of used boys 14-16 junior clubs.

You should start by measuring her wrist to floor, on a hard floor in athletic shoes, standing upright with arms hanging down relaxed.  Measure the left wrist for a right hand player.....from the first crease at the bottom of the palm.

I had an interesting fitting last summer. 65yr old, lady, decent repeatable swing.

Based on swing speed, her transition, strength etc, I had her start with 45gr driver shaft, after numerous lengths and swingweight adjustments we couldn’t get the center-face contact consistent. We stepped up the weight to a 65gr and POW! Couldn't miss. Same swingspeed from both weights. That total weight is very important to dial in. Don't always think about going to the lightest option.

Like said previously, try them as they are if you do get them, and make adjustment much more gradually than you are currently thinking. That's a lot of length change from how they are now, and could make bigger problems/more work with things like swing weight and lie angle...I know and mostly agree that the notion of a fitting session (even at a basic chain-retailer) for your new playing partner might not sound like money well spent at this stage for her, but maybe it may if shes grasping and enjoying it. At least for a good grasp of where to start equipment/metric wise. Either way, I hope you find what works for her.

For a petite person, does anyone know what swingweights the clubs should be at?  Any recommendations on a manufacturer who would do a good job?  (I'd like to get my petite wife a set like the OP).  Thanks!

You might get an idea by going to Callaway preowned and comparing the swing weights of mens and ladies versions of similar clubs. Generally I've seen around D1, D2 for mens and C5 or so for women's version.
