Q-Star Ultispeed, 3 piece ball

The Qstar seems to have been a forgotten ball. Getting lost between the Soft Feel and QST. I think it was a smart move to give it a new name, Ultispeed.

What do you think of this 3 piece ionomer ball?

What do you think of this 3 piece ionomer ball?

If it performs anywhere close to the AD333 they have a winner.

Played it the other day ball it has more distance but way more short game roll out than the Soft Feel. The big problem with the durability as the ball scuffed very easily. It was only the first round with it but that seemed to be an issue with both the balls I played with, no trees or cart paths involved either. imho the Soft Feel is still one of golfs best hidden secrets and best value

Seems just like the old Srixon Tri-Speed/Tri-Speed Tour balls with a different name.

Big pass. Especially as Storm3 says at a $30 price point. Took a page from the Titleist play book on price for a surlyn ball.

To be fair this is the same price point as the 2010 Trispeed line so that was even worse when you consider inflation (granted there weren’t many comparably priced multilayer urethane offerings back then).

The original Q-Star had a urethane cover

Is Srixon not making them anymore?

I played them a few times and thought they were a pretty decent ball especially for the price point

The OG QStar was a direct replacement for the AD333 in North America (both were 2-piece ionomer models). You may be thinking of the QStar Tour which is a lower compression 3-piece TPU model (most similar predecessor was the ZStar SL).

This QStar Ultispeed is essentially a new entrant in the line (most similar predecessor being the Trispeed Tour) with the 2-piece QStar simply being discontinued (AD333 still appears to be continuing in Europe).

I did not realize it was called a Q-Star Tour

But that is the one I was thinking of

You do have the factor inflation. If value is important, why not just get Ksigs?

Agree, with the Soft Feel, very underrated ball and still a great yellow color.

Pretty different ball though, Ksig spins off the planet whereas this ball should be on the other end of the spectrum in spin rates.

I’ve been playing this ball for a few rounds. I feel like it shines off the tee. Long and low spin. Ive gps tracked a few good ones and for sure it is longer then average. I also think it is longer on approaches but I have noticed on some approaches I would expect to hold the green are just rolling to the back fringe. I guess you can’t have everything. So far I think it is a winner tho.

I’ve settled on either Srixon’s QST or QS Ulti as my gamer. Here’s the hard empirical data: In multiple after-hours driver sessions on my home course, well struck Ultis average 15 paces longer than similarly hit QSTs. No kidding.

Let’s suppose that my next shot on a par 4 or 5 is with a fairway wood. I’m guessing the QSU might get me 10ish yards over the QST. I now playing from 6,000 yard tees. Do the 25 yards that the QSU give me outweigh the lack of spin I’ll lose on my wedge game?

Storm, whose opinion I always appreciate, thinks the QSU is overpriced. But since I am a bloated capitalist oligarch 😉 , the difference in price is trivial and inconsequential.

Great ball at a great price, especially since it qualifies for the Srixon Buy2Get1 deal. Dicks also had 20 off 100 which was able to be stacked with the loyalty deal. Got 6 doz of the QSU for 108 dollars and they arrived the next day. 17 dollars a box, fantastic deal.

As for the ball itself, it definitely feels long. I don't think it feels overly hard, maybe a touch firm especially considering its compression rating but wouldn't say it feels overly hard. Haven't had any real issues holding the green if I get the ball in the air, i'm not a big short game spin guy, I tend to just bump and run and i've been happy with these doing that. For guys who really like to try to spin and check the ball i'm sure this won't be the ball for them but for someone looking for something longer you are gonna be hard pressed to beat these.

My first outing with the ball: Long but doesn’t feel hard. Stopping power is an issue. I can stop almost any ball quickly from my 6hybrid down to my wedges but from the 9 up it rolls a bunch like 10 to 15 feet. Won’t make my favorite even if it’s long.

Srixon is making something very easy much harder than it should be for this ball category. The original AD 333 was a GREAT ball. Everything they have released in this category has been inferior. Just release the AD333 again.

Does the market even need this category? A multi layer non-urethane ball. With all the DTCs and big box options in the urethane space, I would say no.

My preferred ball is a 3 piece ionomer, and if that section went away, I would be miffed, but could move on fairly easily. I don't have any empirical data, but it seems like it checks up a little more than a 2 piece ionomer. I could go dtc, but I'm worried about buying in bulk to get the price I'd like, only to have it be a ball I don't really care for. As far as the big box urethane offers, I'm still at the level where I lose balls often enough where even those are above what I'd like to pay for, and the courses I play generally don't require the spin from urethane. I will admit that it's a niche market, but it's a niche that I fall into.

What ball are you playing?

When I said big box retailer, I was talking about Costco and Sam's. I guess they are a warehouse retailer.

Anyway, I believe the KSig and Members Mark are cheaper per ball than any 3 piece surlyn you can get.

My preferred ball is the Trifli, but honestly I'm just a step up from the "I play whatever ball I find in the woods" crowd. I try a lot of different balls.

Unfortunately, I don't have a membership to either Costco or Sam's. The ksig seems to change year to year, but the member's mark intrigues me. Like I said, if this type of ball went away, I would be annoyed, but able to move on. To mitigate the price, I do try to buy in bulk, on sale, with hopefully some rewards and a gift card. Then I'll supplement with balls I've gotten for cheap, an impulse Amazon purchase that I'm trying out, etc.

Took advantage of the Buy 2 get 1 deal 2 weeks ago. One practice 9 is all that it took for me to be comfortable enough to put them into play for a member guest tourney (6 team flights, 9 hole best ball match play) the next day. I went +3, +2, +4, +4 & Even on each of the 9 hole matches

Very tight course & I was able to keep it in play on all but one massive slice into the woods of a tee box trying to crush it. My distance off the tee surprised some of the guys we played against, so that was a bonus too. Made them swing harder & hit more errant shots.

I had no trouble holding greens with approach shots and played my normal low spin chips around the green.

Played 3 sleeves of these now....  Incredible off the tee and for me, especially so into the wind.  BUT.... you better not short side yourself on something downhill.  Very difficult to stop compared to an AVX, Qstar or Kirkland.  Still adjust for the finesse shots but I may stick with this for a bit to see if I can get it to work.
