How's Charley Hull Handling Not Taking a Puff

Since the other poster locked the thread on CH...let's start anew.  She's working hard on not smoking.  May have affected her spelling too, but small price to pay for adding years to your life.😂  I see a win in the future.

Loss of appetite? That's a new one for me. I've known several who gave up the puff-sticks over the years, and to a person they ALL gained weight or struggled to not. 

 

Nonetheless, good for her. Why anyone would decide that inhaling smoke is a fun thing I'll never understand, but then again, I have a severe allergy to tobacco and its derivatives, so it's not much of a temptation for me. Literally everyone in my immediate family smoked at one time and eventually gave it up. They were all better for it down the road. Good for Charley. And, she looks SO much better without that smokestack sticking out of her mouth, IMO.

Definitely backwards of normal for quitters. Smoking suppresses appetite,  not quitting smoking. 

 

Maybe she's got a patch or gum. But whatever,  as long as she's quitting,  that's good.

If she’s using the patch or gum she’s just substituted one nicotine habit for another.   I feel safe in saying no smoker is addicted to having the smelly clothes and smoke in their lungs.  It’s the nicotine that’s addicting not the smoking.

 

This coming from a former smoker of 30+ years that quit cold turkey almost 20 years ago.

Sure, but inhaling the stuff (and, crucially, all the other bad/worse stuff) has got to be worse for you than getting it some other way.

No doubt… I will add I have known many folks that quit cold turkey and stayed quit.  I have never known someone doing the gum or patch that didn’t start smoking again. Nicotine addiction is that bad.

but her choice of background music (Denzel Washington's motivational speech) implies that she is determined to follow-through with her side of the 10k bet i.e. to go without a cigarette for the next 2 months.

He get's 10 grand? I'd be smoking like a chimney (I don't smoke) around her constantly to weaken (cough cough) I mean toughen her resolve.

@jt2gt Please can you consider changing the Thread Title, from "Charley H."  ... to "Charley Hull"?

It's only 1 round. I was expecting Charley to have a poor round since her quitting smoking. I thought she'd be quite anxious. Smoking for some can be quite calmimg.

I'm a 30 year smoker and happy I quit back in 2012. I believe Champix helped me quit. You also have to want to quit too. It's addictive.

Nicotine is nasty. Like any chemical addiction there is at least some effect on mental health. Most people I know who were truly nicotine addicted would be slightly jumpier after quitting BUT in general seemed to have a more positive attitude towards life. So interesting to see how Charley's game fares over the long haul. On one hand being more "jumpy" intuitively seems like a negative for golf, but the "brighter" attitude would help when a round becomes a grind.

I quit September 2011 using the patch.  Hated the taste of the gum. Patch worked.  Just had crazy dreams if I didn't remember to take it off before I went to bed.

Why?

 

Good for her if she wants to quit smoking - she's doing it for her health hopefully, you're exploiting it for personal attention.

 

Edit: Unfortunately, she's going the snus route, so she won't solve the problem, which is nicotine, and it won't "wean" her off of it - so I guess the hope she was doing it for health reasons vs. maybe optics might be misplaced. Just quit Charley, that's what is needed if you want to make that choice.

Don't disagree at all, but I can completely understand if she would want to wait until the off-season to quite. My dad's journey to quit was a nightmare. As a cop surrounded by cops who smoked, it was not a fun thing to experience...for anyone. But, it was worth it in the end. 

 

Hopefully she doesn't decide to chew and spit as an alternative!

This.  Quitting nicotine cold turkey isn't likely to be good for her job performance, plus it's not a very pleasant thing to go through as it is.  Breaking the physical habit of smoking or vaping can be a good first step.
