Project x to modus

Recommended Posts

Strongly considering moving from my 5.5 PX to modus 115s.  Anyone else done something similar to this?

I played the PX 5.5 in some Ping IE heads and recently hit the Nippon 115 stiff in a set of 925 Forged.  Must say I miss the Pings and the PX 5.5.  Great shaft and felt terrific despite the rep of PX being harsh.  The Nippon also felt good but the PX just jived with my quick transition a bit better.

Fair point.  I do like my PX 5.5.  I have a 115s in my 4i and also love it.  But nothing wrong with my 5.5s.  Will probably stick there for now, just some random musings on a cold Ohio day really.

I had PX 6.0 for a long time, they were always on the edge of being a hair too stiff for me.  But I got them around 2007-ish, and I don't believe they had half-flex options at the time. If 5.5 was available, I think that would have been perfect.

Had 2 shoulder surgeries between 2015 and 2020, once I was fully recovered I went in for a fitting to try to get lighter and possibly graphite shafts.  The fitter, who I knew pretty well, told me that with my quick transition, I would be better in a lighter steel shaft that more closely matched the profile of the PX.

We settled on Modus 105 stiff - for me, it was a similar ball flight with a slightly different feel.  But we're talking about a different clubhead and about 30g lighter shafts, so I wasn't expecting to mimic the exact feel of my older clubs.  After that, I also got new wedges with Modus 115 wedge shafts, which I also really like.

So in general, if you're looking to get lighter, maybe generate a hair more speed, the 115 will probably do that with a similar ball flight as the PX5.5.  But for the most part, I would guess that going to Modus 115 would be a lateral move.

I really like both the 105 and 115 modus shafts.  Im not sure they play like PX 5.5 but I sure do get on with them (as I do with the PX 5.5).  The modus feels crisper to me.  Who knows what I will do.  I will say this though, that I felt both the 105 and 115 were really stable shafts, even in 105r flex.  Im a mere mortal but a handle puller from the top (fight getting steep especially in the short irons and wedges).  I recently got turned onto Modus and have been enjoying them TBH.

This is me too.  I recently gave a set of Mizuno MMC MP20 to a friend after playing them for 5 years.  Modus 120 stiff and they were great.  Definitely had better results when I had a smoother tempo but can get a bit pully.  I also recently tested the Modus 115 against DG Mid 115 and preferred the thump of the DG.  Nippon were good too but I think I like a little play in the shaft.  Could easily play the Nippon 115 though.  Nice shaft.

Hope the weather warms up in Ohio.  Idle hands make for online golf purchases...

I just moved from PX io 6.5 to Modus 115X and love the transition. PX kept going right on me (LH). The 115’s feel more stable throughout the swing for me while still having that sudden “whip” at impact. All around more workable for my swing. I’m not losing them right anymore unless I really turn one over.

Give the dg 115 mid a try as well. Similar profile to project x with a slightly more active tip.

I've swung that in an opus wedge. Didn't mind it. Launch was much higher for me compared to modus 115. But a decent shaft in its own right.

Got my mits on a single modus 115s 9i shaft.  Going to start there. I do like the modus feel at 115g.  Crisp, stable and excellent feeling for me.

Short range session today with the wedges only, and was really grooving them.

Interesting, my story is the reverse but thought I'd post here for an additional viewpoint;

Had 3 sets of titleist over the last 6 years, all with PX 6.0 Rifle. 718MB, T100, 620MB. Ball striking was always my strength. 12 months ago I wanted to try something a little more forgiving than the 620MB as 1 mishit per round was preventing me getting to scratch. During the fitting I tried everything from Titleist T150, Mizuno, Ping, Wilson, Srixon, Callaway etc. Ended up that the Srixon ZX7 performed significantly better for me, especially on mishits. The shaft was Modus 120S and it seemed to work. Anyhoo, the last 12 months have been terrible, playing to my handicap only 6 or so times in that period. My ball striking has worsened to the point where last week, utterly dismayed, I had an idea to buy some PX 6.0 Rifle and put them in the Srixon heads........... et Voila, what a transformation. I've played 3 rounds since, and each one has been a flag round, and the stats are remarkable. I've nearly had 3 holes in one and hit so many awesome irons that it is like I'm a totally different golfer. This past Saturday I hit 15 greens when in rained all day. I now feel like I could lay back to PW distance because I'm better with PW and PX 6.0 shaft than I am with the DG Spinner shafts in the wedges. In true golfwrx fashion, I just bought three PX 6.0 Wedge Shafts and had them put in my wedges as  I'm prepared to take the punt given the results with the irons.

I honestly would never have believed anyone who told me this story, but I'm kinda stunned by the difference.

This makes complete sense to me.  The Modus 120 and PX are drastically different.  And, by playing the 120 in stiff, you changed at least two flexes, in my opinion.  The profile of PX 6.0 is stiffer than Modus 120 TX, much less 120 S.

Adding some Wishon shaft profile information below, to show a comparison between Modus 120 S/X/TX and PX 6.0.  Also added DGX100 as another comparison:

Wow, thanks so much. That really is quite incredible. Glad I posted the story and even more grateful you responded.

@NRJyzr - Do you happen to have KBS Tour and Wedge shafts (Vokey, DGS400, PXW, DG Spinner) data in that spreadsheet ? If so, can you share those numbers please ?

Don't have any wedge shafts, but I do have KBS Tour.  Added both S and X to the mix, as well as DGS400
