Titleist TSR1 adjustment

Joelsim

Recommended Posts

I've bought a TSR1 23* with the intention of turning it into a utility club, replacing my 5 and 6 irons, at least the 5 anyway.

I'm also not a fan of the noodle the TSR1s come with so I've bought a HZRDUS Black Gen 5 6/0, which I love in my fairways, and I also loved the Gen 4 in a TSR2 as well.

The shaft length of the new one is the same as the noodle I'm taking out, 39.5" with a playing length of 40". I believe the TSR1 has a 2g lighter head so this could potentially have a SW effect.

I have a weight kit, and I'll almost certainly need to adjust the loft to 24* for gapping (tbc).

How would knowledgable folk approach this on SW, loft, head weight, spin, height basis please? I'm putting the Gen 5 in to lower the flight and spin a bit as I'm a high, spinny hitter. I will be testing at the range, but I don't want to smash the club up completely on those rock hard balls if at all possible, so ideally I'll have a testing weight and loft strategy in mind before I start.

Buy some foot powder spray, put your shaft in the head, and hit balls until you are making center face contact and the distance you want. It’s the only way you can set club up for YOU.

If you don’t want to hit range balls, take some of your old balls that you play, and hit those.

Thanks. Can you advise on what adding weight (and loft) will likely do to the spin and launch angles? The weight is right at the back on the bottom of a hybrid that's shaped a bit like a fairway.

All info useful beforehand.

It all depends on you and your swing.

For some, more weight back will increase launch. You won’t know what will happen until you hit it.
Loft will have more effect on ball flight than a shaft will.

More loft, generally more spin as well.

Thank you. My main objective with this club is to hit it 170-180y, straight, and stopping quickly. As I said I'm a high hitter so I have no trouble stopping clubs generally, normally the problems are because I don't get much roll from anything.

Will +2g/4g/6g effect spin or height?

You’re not getting it.

It might. You need to see what it does to add weight when you hit it.
I can’t tell you what you are going to like the feel of, I can’t tell you exactly how you are going to change your delivery based on added weight, loft or shaft change.
You need to try these changes, see if you are getting center strikes, see if you are getting the desired ball flight and distance.

Don’t be afraid to try different settings. You are not going to break the club.

Look up the DIY driver fitting in this forum. It’s a great way to fit any club in the bag. You will learn more doing this yourself than from someone thousands of miles away on an internet golf forum.

I'll be trying a few things, I just don't want to end up hitting 400 shots on the range, would rather it was 60 or 70. Hence why I'm trying to get an understanding before I do that from people who know more than I do about adjustments to clubs and actually fitting. Thanks for your help.

Read this first. It will help immensely. And, you won’t have to hit even 60 balls.

I’ve been playing TSi1 hybrids and now TSR1 hybrids.  I don’t use the stock lightweight shafts either and use the Evenflow White 90g.  I am swingweight sensitive and use the weights to dial in my desired feel, so I can make repeatable solid contact.  I deal with launch via the Surefit adapter.  I wouldn’t play them with sub-optimal weights ( for me ) for the sake is increasing or decreasing launch.

I’d say add weight until they swing well, and go play them and see what you get.

I have 2 x 20* and a 23*, 2x Evenflow White shafts and Accra GX 200h M4 and 100h M3 shaft.  I have them with weights of stock 9g, 11g, and 15g … which is meaningless for everyone else as I play them at shorter lengths, the shafts have different balance points, and I like heavier swing weights, and I use heavy Jumbo grips.

Determine what length you’re comfortable swinging at, and add await until it feels “right”. Repeatable Contact is King.

Yeah. Received the new TSR1 and the new HZRDUS Black Gen 5 80g shaft yesterday afternoon, so I'm going down to the range today to give it a hit. I've added the 13g weight to start off with, but will be trying it with the 11g and the stock 9g too. I would've started it with the 11g weight first but that's currently in my TSR1 18* Fairway.

Have it set on 23* standard to start off with, I know what distance I want to get out of it so a couple of things to test.

Blimey, what a club!

Absolutely straight as a die and consistent distance. Hit about 30 shots, the first ten at 23*, the rest at 24*. Could've thrown a blanket over the whole lot of them in each case. The degree extra of loft removed about 8y which hit the number I was looking for, the 4g of weight was perfect. No need to adjust the hosel settings other than the 1*.

Very happy bunny.

Great to hear !  I think the TSi1/TSR1/GT1 are the sleeper model in the Titleist range.

Better players may disregard them because they are pitched as lightweight, larger heads, and are targeted to slow swingers.  Toss out those light shafts, put in your fav shaft, adjust the weights as needed , and go find some fairways or greens.

I just bought another 23* hybrid yesterday ( new in eBay for dirt cheap ), so I now have a 20 & 23 for my 2 bags of clubs.  One set has Evenflow White 90S shafts and the other will have Accra GX 200h/100h, to mix it up   I also have one TSR1 15* FW with a HZRDUS Red 60 Reg shaft.

I know as a WRX'r that it is blasphemy to say I am now set for life, but truly feel I just can't do much better than these TSR1's, along with their easy weight and hosel adjustability.  I'm done hunting for the next best thing when it comes to hybrids ( and feel the same about my Edel SMS Pro irons, and Mizuno OMOI #3 putter )

Agree. Both my hybrid and my 5W seem to be very consistent and easy to hit. I'm looking for one for my son who's only started playing this year.

I'm hoping this head doesn't sit open like my ts2 hybrid does.
