I put The Masters at No. 1 -- just love it.  In terms of importance - probably the PGA ranks 4th of the Majors.  I keep hearing people saying The Open (British Open) is the greatest of them all - but not for me. Played on old farm paddocks disguised as golf courses and often in atrocious conditions .... and links golf is a lot about fortunate breaks. I agree it's often fun to watch, but if you look through the list of winners, there are plenty who never did much anywhere else.

Yikes. That is a harsh take on golf in its mother land. I loooooovvvvveeeee ANGC but it’s golf in perfectly manicured conditions. The Open is golf in its purest form. Both options are amazing. Just different.

Links golf is about overcoming unfortunate breaks or being mentally tough and not being spoiled by wide plush fairways, huge greens, no rough to speak of, no penalty for hitting in the trees because all the brush is cleared and the area carpeted with pine straw, and bunkers you actually want to land in.  It values character over boring technical “perfection.”

Sometimes, maybe, at least.

@MattyO1984Didn't the Brits throw down a glove, in such scenarios i.e. challenge the offender to a duel?

How many links courses have you played and what about each didn't you like in particular? To suggest links golf is about "fortunate breaks" is at least some rudimentary understanding of the experience but hardly a condemnation vs. any other type of golf course, but at the same time not understanding it. I'd rather play any course in the Open rota (and tons of "lesser" ones) over just about any course in the U.S. any time - of course I'd be playing courses where people never did much:  Morris, Morris, Jones, Hagen, Braid, Vardon, Palmer, Thomson, Nicklaus, Woods, Player, Watson, Ballesteros, Norman, Charles, De Vincenzo, Weiskopf, Trevino --- all those chops.  Every tournament has its winners who come out of "nowhere"

All a matter of choice, but Masters and The Open Championship on my list as the two majors I'd most like to win, hands down.

True fans of the game should appreciate different types of courses whether it is parkland, links or anywhere in between.

The game originated from links golf and essentially the Open is the important link we have with where it all started. We shouldn't forget where we have come from to get to where we are today.

I would watch all the top pros play on a dirt track public golf course. Golf is golf.

he's still an amateur so he would have needed to win one of the amateur spots, us am 1,2 , ncaa div 1 champ, latin am 1, us mid am 1, the am 1. if he was a pro they could have invited him based on form.

why is everyone sleeping on brian harman dudes a lefty from georgia who just won a tournament by 3 after shooting +3....

oh wait its brian harman, more people will probably pick yjs ;}

Mostly for the fact that historically he's never been particularly good at Augusta. 4 cuts in 6 starts with a 12 and 44.

While I absolutely place The Masters at #1, I believe one Ryan Burr pointed out that a) because the Masters is an invitational with a relatively small field and b) because past champions with no hope of competing are given places along with a handful of amateurs that the top players must concern themselves with beating only about 30 other top players. As we know, the club has attempted to address the past champion issue and the field size or the size of the top flight doesn't diminish the achievement among players and certainly not among the public.

Bit harsh re: the Open Championship but I take your point. But golf started on links courses and links golf is amazing in its own right - as the time, effort and money spent on (re)creating links courses in the US eg Kiawah will attest. And outdoor games of any kind are played in (varying) weather, domes notwithstanding. It adds to the intrigue, strategy and the rub of the green has always been a fun - or cruel - part of the game.

It could be argued that The Masters and The Open are at opposite ends of the spectrum - The Masters is played on the same perfect course in (usually) perfect conditions every year where as The Open is played on (a finite rota of) different courses in wild and wildly diverse conditions. The focus is on the winner at The Masters - green jacket etc. The Open celebrates its winner also but each Open is celebrated as a time capsule of sorts - the golf, the weather, the courses with their tame-looking but punitive hazards, the good and bad luck. Vive la difference.
