I got the heavy head in my DF3, as the standard weight felt far too light.  I couldn't imagine a light / standard head in a longer shaft (like CB or broomstick).

Not that I put much stock in the swing weight of a putter, and I’ll definitely double check on another scale…

but my normal head spec’d OZ1i w/TPT and press pistol is at a E5… my previous gamer is a D4… so now I know where some of my speed issues are coming from. Definitely a big change in balance.

Definitely - maybe throw a little less tape on there to see if it helps

Looks like they make it in 63* if you can make that work..

I'm a huge proponent of the Outlet - its probably where I'll eventually pick up a Link.  They even had some limited all black / all white Links a couple years ago.

Well, the Scotty might be kicked out before Thursday’s tournament. Played my practice round today and was really happy with the progress. I’m getting much more confident with the OZ after a few rounds now and the results were great. Not my best putting round ever at 29, but the greens on this course are pretty tricky (hosts several USGA quals and first round for Champions Q-school) and were rolling 12-13. Irons could have been much better, but don’t feel like I missed a putt all day.

I’m going to give it a bit more time to see if I get more used to it… but if it’s still a struggle that’s the plan. Figure out how much weight with lead tape, then counter weight plug it to that weight.

Very tough greens at that course when they’re running fast.

Yes.

And I've had the opportunity to test a TPT so I should be able to provide a good comparison of the 2 shafts.

Putter arrives tomorrow, very excited.

Got out for 9 holes and a few practice putting sessions. Really feel like I’m starting to get super comfy, really just still fine tuning the grip pressure on certain length putts.

played 9 and shot 37, 3 fairways, 4 greens and 13 putts. Had a nice 0 putt on a birdie that rolled in from the fringe. Had a few long lag putts that almost went in and left tap in pars. Honestly loving the putter!

I received my lab putter on Saturday afternoon.  I ordered a blue OZ.1i with a custom alignment, gears shaft, 77.5* lie angle, 35" length and requested a head weight around 352grams.

INITIAL PREORDER RESEARCH:

Picking a Putter head:

I was able to go to my local PGA Tour Superstore and try out the OZ.1 and Oz.1i.

-The Oz.1 has a much more muted sound and feel.  I think it would be great for anyone playing a hard ball (think distance ball).  The ball travelled less distance with this putter, making it also ideal if you like to take bigger swings or play really fast greens.  It felt softer, which I know some people (like my close buddy) strongly prefer.

-With the Oz.1i, the insert brought a firmer/crisper feel, much louder (enjoyable) sound and a surprisingly long roll out with the swing.  I personally have really good touch and like to gently hold the putter and prefer shorter swings so this was an instant winner for me.  Ideal for slow to mid speed greens or fast greens if you have good touch.  If you tend to leave your putts short with their current putter, this is a no brainer.

Picking a Putter shaft:

This was the hardest part of the whole process.  One of the most important things for me was figuring out what the weight of the shafts were so I could align my headweight according to the shaft weight.  I think one area LAB could improve upon is providing the shaft weights for each model on their website.  Another is having models at the stores with each shaft to try.  Based on endless searching and reading here's what I found:

*TPT and Accra were the heaviest shaft options.  The Accra is softer.  The TPT is the stiffest of all shaft options.  I did get to try this TPT shaft and the feel was remarkable.

*The steel and gears are the lighter shaft options.  I don't think there is anything wrong with the steel, I simply ordered the gears out of curiosity and because I prefer putters in the 520-530g range.

I included a pic of the overall weight of my build below for anyone who was curious and trying to stay in a specific weight build for their own personal reference.  I'm thinking the TPT & Accra would be roughly 15-16grams heavier for the same 35" build versus this Gears shaft.  You can do the math based on what length you play.

ORDER PROCESS:

Shelby reached out to me to setup a conversation with Sam.  After a nice chat with him, I got several build questions answered and referenced to Calvin to begin the order process.

HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING DETAILS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW:

1) You CAN modify the alignment aid to just about anything you want (you are not limited to the 200+ options on the website, haha).  If you do this, I do recommend you provide them with as accurate of a photoshop example of the custom alignment as you can.

2) You CAN request exact head weights.  So rather than hoping for the best on ordering a light, standard, or heavy head, just say I'd like to get as close to 352grams (or whatever) as possible and they will do it.

3) I can't verify they did it but I was told you can request 1/2 degree lie angles, so 72.5 instead of 72 or 73 if you are picky like me.

4) If you have a specific grip you want installed and it's not on their website, you can send them 1 and they will install it on your putter.  Or you can install yours after you receive it.

Onward, after you get all your details sorted out Calvin will get the order placed with your build details.  You'll receive email updates when it's in production, shipped and delivered.  I know a lot of people gripe about lead times but as someone who has ordered custom made putters, lead times on custom putters take a lot longer.  Lab is growing but they are still a fairly small company with a limited number of employees busting their butts to fill the crazy demand.  Custom putters simply take more time but they are usually well worth the wait.

Here are some pics of this beauty fresh out the plastic.  Don't worry about any imperfections in the finish, those came out quickly after a quick wash in baby oil.

I've only gotten to roll some putts inside so far, a friend is installing my preferred grip so I should be able to use it 9 holes on Wednesday night.

On a off topic side note, I got my 2nd hole in one ever this weekend!  104yd knock down pitching wedge that was really fun because it slowly died to the hole before disappearing.  Really fun to get to experience that feeling with a group of close friends.  Later in the round I missed out on a 2nd hole in by 1 itch from 110ish with the same club.  It landed 5 inches from the hole, spin back 1" from the side of the hole and stopped less than a foot below it.  I literally fell to my knees like Rory at the masters.  What a day!  These are the moments golf addicts live for.

Back on topic, I'll have much more coming up in the near future including my thoughts on the putter, the Gears shaft vs TPT vs Steel, details that stand out to me whether positive or negative and much more.

Big thanks to WRX and LAB (Shelby, Sam and Calvin) for this opportunity and all the communication, hard work and labor that went into their beautiful putter.

This is actually incredibly beneficial to know and if doing it again, I would definitely use this knowledge. Especially the head weight part.

I have a standard weight insert model with TPT and rubber grip.  It's 589.  Crazy the difference.

Forgot to add to this. During my round, I used the OZ.1i from a spot I could never use my DF2.1. It was on an steep up slope in rough (about 1' from the fringe and green). I was about 15' out and used it to get within 2' of the hole. If I was playing the round with my DF2.1 I would have had to try and chip with my wedge, which likely would have been disastrous from that lie as the DF2.1 would not have been able to get the ball out. Another benefit to the shape of the OZ.

Yes, another update, color me obsessed.

Just a few things - this past weekend’s round was on recently aerated greens (VERY sandy).  18 holes later and not a mark/scratch/imperfection on the putter at all. Fantastic durability.

Secondly, I had promised a swing weight measurement for everybody a while back.  I had forgotten about it because it feels just like a standard putter to me with regards to weight. No different than my last 8…9…10 putters I’ve had (that should cover the last few months 😝).  Anyway, my girl, she thick.. E8.  E8!  My only conclusion is that swing weight just is not as “feel-able” on putters as it is the hit sticks.  Funny though, I don’t even notice. Must be love.  Until next time…

Feel like I just got a lambo and took it for it's first drive in sloppy road conditions after a snow.  Used the new Lab OZ.1i last night for the first time outside for 9 holes of league and the conditions were terrible... chilly, raining or spitting rain most of the round.  That kind of round where everything is wet and no matter how many towels you brought, you wish you had more.

After flat out shanking a wedge that slipped in my downswing, I busted out the dual rain gloves, which I then used for everything including putting.  I was able to putt without the gloves for about 3 holes.  I'm trying not to make too much of a quick initial opinion from that short, rough initial test but I'm viewing this as a journey and going to provide out-Loud thoughts along the way so...

(and I want to repeat, don't put this in stone, just initial thoughts...I fully expect those thoughts could change after playing in better conditions this weekend and getting more used to the putter/shaft)

-Putted surprisingly well considering the circumstances.  No 3 putts.  Made a couple short ones I thought I missed.

-Initial thoughts about the GEARS shaft are very mixed.  I was very disappointed with the feel.  It provides SUBSTANCIALLY less feedback than the TPT I tried did.  Felt like it made a different feel and sound off the face during contact because of it, once again in a negative way compared to the TPT.  That being said, it performed respectable and the lighter weight of the GEARS (compared to the TPT) was MUCH better for my preferences.  The TPT felt like a brick, I could just tell it was heavier than I preferred.  I'll have more thoughts on the shafts in the future.  Something tells me the gears will get better once I get used to it...at least I hope, haha.

-Regarding the OZ.1i head itself.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE the alignment aid.  LAB's just in a league of it's own being able to create exactly what fits your eye for excellent aim and contact.  Normally there's a break in period for new putters, especially going from a blade to a mallet but this was surprisingly seamless.

-My biggest concern initially is speed control, especially on the big breakers and downhillers.  I think the big proponent for this ties to the shaft and lack of feel/feedback.

-My favorite aspect so far has been the aim and getting the ball rolling on the right path to going in.  Putter felt better on left to rights compared to my gamer.  That's a big plus for me since it's my primary weakness with my gamer.

I'm very educated and picky when it comes to putters.  I can usually tell very quickly if a putter isn't going to work for me.  I don't get that sense initially with this Oz.

Excited to use it this weekend in better weather conditions and provide more feedback.

Pic simply for refence (since there's a lot of reviews going on)

After some drill work did a stack putting with the OZ. I wasn’t great but was also the first time I did it on this green complex ( which has massive slopes and runs at 11-12 stimp). The df2 comparison is on a much slower green from earlier this year with not as much drastic slopes. App calls it a tie. To really prove that need to bring my df out here and see how it compares. I did notice during my drills today a heel side pull I would do. I really need to hammer more thumbs off work.

Best putter ever. Got stock counterbalance. I put black tape over the T alignment as I struggle with lines. I ordered a charcoal one, With no alignment marks.  I have about 10-15 rounds. I’ve always struggled on fast greens. This thing is a game changer.  I played in member/guest on greens that were running 13–14.  Distance control is a game changer for me. Highly recommend if you’re like me.

DAMN!  Jealous you are playing on greens that fast.  Mine are around a 9.  Putting becomes a whole-nother beast on greens that quick.  I love them that way.

Glad the no-alignment aid putter is working good for you!  I tried 4-5 putters with no alignment aids (aka naked) and I had a tendency to struggle with short putts because of it.

I already feel like the next step for LAB is to offer 4 different face milling options for the OZ.1i

1) smooth

2) lightly milled

3) medium milled (currently offered)

4) deep milled

I really like the insert on my Oz.1i. It feels perfect. I was worried when people said it was hot but I don’t find it any hotter than the Ai One milled insert or the Spider inserts which are the two putters I played up to the Oz.i. In fact I would say it’s less hot than both of those which is a positive for me.
