Mesa Country Club Renovation

The renovations were brought up in another thread, but I thought it deserved its own discussion.

 

In addition to a clubhouse remodel (which I don't really have any interest in), the club completed a major renovation to its course, including new irrigation system, bunker and green re-do, tree removal and a couple of hole changes.  

 

From what I can tell, the master plan and project was headed by architect Andy Staples.  Some info appears on the MCC website:

I last played out there maybe 15 years ago.  Notes here are from observations from the aerials of Google Earth.

All new greens with new shapes and some relocations.

All new bunkers adopting freeform shapes (vs. old oval shapes)

Relocation Hole #1 green

Relocation of hole #2 the par 3 that used to run east to west, now north to south.

New green site on #5, lengthening the hole by ~50 yards.

All new hole # 14

Tree removal and new bunkers between #1 and #15.

More that I've missed for sure.

I had a friend in town for the month of February and he had a connection there and played 3 times. He was a little disappointed with the conditions for the price he paid. It had everything to do with the fact that it really hadn't matured from the reno. He had no prior access before the reno, so there was nothing to compare as far as before/after.

I'm going to go check it out in the next couple weeks. I'm considering joining the club. There isn't a wait list right now.

Ill be playing it in the next few weeks.  heard from a member buddy that the new greens are real firm and crazy fast, but thats to be expected.

My dad played it and enjoyed it. Thought it was a solid neighborhood club and a good everyday course. His feeling was that it's unremarkable but nice and interesting enough for an everyday course.

 

He wound up not joining because he'd rather keep playing what he feels are better public courses with his buddies.

 

I think they raised the initiation like $20k since last year.

I teach a few members from there and have played it a ton, I’ll be out there in the next few weeks to play it. I’m most excited about #2 and the new short par 4 that replaces the lone long par 3. Will report back soon with pictures!

They removed a tennis court or two and  doubled the driving range  in size, most greens are turtle backs with semi deep bunkers. Good luck if short siding yourself. The over seed was little rough since they started in Aug during high heat so  didn’t take. I hear getting a lot better. I guess they are closing for a couple weeks in summer to correct some turf issues around the  time most private clubs close for some summer work. Added length and new tee boxes. Initiation is crazy high last I heard more like 60-80k but who knows market dictates price and they only had a few spots left. They are not  overselling membership to keep pace of play quick and accessible.

I joined there some years ago and only lasted for the summer.  The course is nice if you play it every so often but I wasn't a fan for constant play.  There are something like 7 or 8 holes that favor a draw off the tee to really take advantage of the hole and I personally wasn't a fan of a couple of the par 3's due to the turtleback greens.  The par 5s were good though and I liked the short game and wedge practice areas quite a bit.
