Callaway EPIC Forged Star irons. (JDM Version)

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a JDM set of the irons with a SR speeder shaft. I just been hunting why it's common to get a 6-9, PW and couldn't help noticing the lofts are very strong. I have to wait a few weeks for them to arrive in Australia.

I might have to source a GW or AW as I don't think a PW of 38deg is a good gap to my 50deg Jaws MD5

Anyone use these forged GI's before? They look interesting

i had to purchase these from golfpartners jp via zenmarket and found out that chatgpt was a little confused over lofts. the US versions of these came out with different shafts and lofts, where the japanese variants seem to be even stronger lofts in the lower irons/wedges. I have a bit of a monster gap i'm trying to navigate as getting a 45/46 degree wedge in Australia is interesting and i dont want 2x PW's in my bag. Currently i have Callaway Jaws MD5's for my 50 and 54, but wondering do i go 46, 50 and 54/56 for a japanese set of wedges like Fourteen? i beleive i should be looking to get the same shafts, lie angles and other items consistent with this end of the bag.

i've been testing some of the older burners with the graphite shafts  in a reg flex as i noticed my swing speed was floating around the early to late 70mph's in the 7i and of the mindset that all these years i might have been poorly assessed for the right shaft speed as in 2011 it was in a net and by eye and i've never questioned the stiff shaft as "everyone else has been doing it". With an stock offering in the TM Burner i was able to hit as far if not further than my Kuro's or Hy Specials without the fatigue of trying to hit it harder. I think a reg may be too whippy, but the Japanese with the SR (Stiff/Reg) middle ground may be what i've been wanting.

They arrived, these are pretty nice set of irons (albeit the wear on the sole), grooves are in good condition along with the shafts/grips.

I do have a few concerns with the japanese specs for these irons as the lofts are very strong. What i took a gamble on was the shaft flex and went the SR, which is inbetween Reg and Stiff and not senior like i thought it was. I have noticed that my swing speed in the sims wasnt fast enough for stiff.

also still trying to figure out how to get my hands on a 44-46deg wedge that suits the bag. Saw a fourteen DJ-5 and some other models for a decent price, but would love a MD5 Jaws as i already have the 50 and 54 in that series

went to the sim yesterday and swung them for the first time, i was surprised. They felt nice to hit and basically were a few clubs longer than the number on the iron, i only experienced this feeling a few times with the Kuro's. I felt that with the SR flex and weight that i didnt have to try and belt it and it went straighter than before. I think the Japanese were onto something with this middle flex between the western Reg and Stiff.

Real test will be on the course as the mats can mask hitting behind or under the ball, which for me will be in an hour.

Second round, feel great the forged head and the Japanese SR graphite speeder shaft are a great pairing. Would be interested why they went a different path to the US market

Been using the same irons with same shaft and flex for the past 3 years. Great irons!

I was lucky to get them brand new from CALLAWAY at a good price. I added the SW to complete the set.

I think the length play about an inch longer than standard.  I had the SW play an inch shorter than the PW.
Got the MD5 at 50* and 60*. The SW, 50* and 60* all play the same length.

Hybrids: Apex 24 UW 21*

Irons: Epic Forged Star 6-SW

Wedge: Callaway JAWS MD5 50 / 60

On having Japanese Versions (JV) clubs, the Asian market is huge. Asian golfers are willing to pay good money for clubs that would better fit their swing speed and built. US versions tend to play a bit stiff than Asian versions.

they are longer and just seem to work. Funny i have the MD5 50* and 54* but would like the EFS AW if i can get it in the SR flex as well just so i have that 43* . I have picked up the Epic Super Hybrid in the 4H and a Epic Max 3w, both with those Diamana SR flex shafts which i think will play like the Speeder Evo's, just went a bit nuts with the JDM callaway stuff.

I had a similar issue with my Epic Max Fasts, a JDM only version of the current Epic Max Star.  Mine came 7-AW with the AW at 43°. Getting a matching club to fill the gap to my wedges was impossible.  Luckily in a free fitting, my fitter said I didn't need new irons, just weaken my irons 2°.  Brilliant.

In your case, buy a 43° AW and than bend all your irons 2° weak.  You'll have perfects gaps all the way through to your 50°.

I was looking at the auctions and golf partners and just when I gave up the matching AW with the same shaft appeared so I grabbed it with no photos. Actually good condition and was the perfect match.

Also grabbed the 2h and 3h in the epic super hybrids and a epic max driver head so fully epic'd haha. Paired that driver head with a loop BW shaft I picked up. But my rogue ST max is my daily driver with the speeder NX Green shaft
