Sagebrush/Tobiano

Heading up in a couple weeks for two rounds on Sagebrush and one round on Tobiano. Anyone played Tobiano yet this year? Thoughts on Sagebrush? Had both on the list for years!

A few thoughts on our three days of golf we just wrapped up. Two of us played two rounds on Sagebrush (stayed on site) and one round at Tobiano.

Sagebrush - totally worth playing! One round is not enough, for that matter, two isn't either. Two words I would use to describe the course are fun and quirky (both extreme positives in my mind). I can't really think of another course I would compare it to. There are quite a few blind shots, but I thought they were all fair. When they say its a Match Play course, completely agree. You (we) are going to have a bad hole here or there, but don't let that inhibit your ability to have fun out there. Next time we'll definitely bring four or eight guys and play Better Ball and Shamble formats. Quite a few holes and shots that you want another crack at. Most every hole was worthy of further discussion on highs/lows/strategy. The customer service was top notch as well. Seemed most of the employees we met remembered our names throughout the stay. There were probably more, but the only real quibble we had was that there is no driving range (although they are in the process of installing some hitting nets).

Tobiano - Going in, my thoughts were that this would be a beautiful and hard course (not two elements that I look for in a golf course). After playing, I would use beautiful and intimidating as the descriptors. Do yourself a favor and don't spend time looking at the course on Google maps or pouring over the course flyovers. There was an impactful wind for us and we managed to find fairway, or near fairway, all day. The approaches are challenging. Felt Nicklaus like, in that I was often left looking at the top half of a pin tucked behind several bunkers with what appeared to be no room to come up short or long. Really had to focus at times on just finding the green and working for two putts. I was really surprised by how much elevation change there was on the course. Ready for another play given the knowledge/confidence I now have regarding the course.

When we go again, we'll play Tobiano first, to take advantage of the driving range after the four hour drive. Head to Sagebrush after the round and see about sneaking in 7 holes or heading to the chipping course (actually pretty fun!). Play 36 the next day. Start with a Shamble format for the morning and Better Ball for the afternoon. Next day another 18 then head home.

Tobiano is tough as nails and gorgeous. One of my favorites ever and I just got back from Scotland (And have over 30 of the BC top 50 crossed off my list. Working on all 50!)

Sagebrush as others above said is unique, quirky and a must play but it didnt "hit home" for me like it has others. I did have a very hard time with what I believe were 7 or 8 blind tee shots at Sagebrush? By the end it was kind of annoying me haha.

What is the food situation there now?

Was there a couple of years ago for 3 rounds and two nights stay but no food services unless we ordered catering from Merritt.

Ended up taking the motorhome and had it setup in the gravel parking lot and had bbq there. Was really nice and the views from that parking lot were great.

Only had a hot dog and a burger at the shack at 13th hole, both were good. Dinner at the lodge was great though! Several items on the menu seemed worthy of trying. Breakfast burrito the next morning hit the spot.

How far ahead do you have to book for Tobiano and Sagebrush? And the Okanagan generally?

I think they all have online booking, so you can just go and check the tee sheets. I have never had any issues in getting tee times, but maybe a week or two out I would consider booking. I think most use the Chronogolf app, if you download that app, you can very easily see how early tee sheets open and book something. That is what I have used every time for Tobiano anyway. Okanagan might be busier than Tobiano and Sagebrush, which are kind of out there a bit. But still, I would think you would be safe a couple of weeks out. If you need something specific, just call the shop, I'm sure they can accommodate. But that Chronogolf app is great for that area, check it out.
