Off season backswing work

Recommended Posts

Over the winter I have been working on getting my weight over the balls of my feet at address as well as a flat/inside take away and backswing. To me, my backswing is looking good, please tell me if I'm wrong. From the top, it feels like my sequence is off. To me it feels like I settle into my left foot but then I can't stay closed long enough and my right moves way too soon.

Grip looks a bit strong, arms look a bit deep at P3, chin is too tucked, and you're over rotating in the backswing. Stop it at left arm parallel and you're at 90* of rotation, which is still probably too much for the club youre hitting, but you're way over a 100* at the top, which is miiiiiiiles too much.

Try a bit of the 'no turn' part of the NTC.

Was about to post something similar.

You look just fine.  Don't get lost in the position sauce this year.  Just work on getting a better move from the top.  Work on a Justin Rose type drill / feel to get the club moving better from the top.  It's got to feel like your firing arms / shoulders from the top and not your lower body.  Your lower body will go without trying.

I have battled a long backswing for a very long time. I used to be able to see the head of my driver in my peripheral vision when I was younger and much more flexible. I chase the trail arm straight vertical position and I think it causes my over swing.

Backswing definitely looks better. Be careful about getting steep. So long as the backswing move is ingrained, I agree with @wagolfer7 that you should add in the justin rose drill now....with a shortened backswing length

Watch ball position...it's too far back.

Thanks for my next area of focus, I have tried the Rose drill before, but that was way back when I was just starting my swing change journey. Time to revisit!

Experiment with standing further from the ball at setup - too close now so arms come down too close to body and you pull low and left - you want the arms to able to extend away from you thru impact while the forearms supinate/pronate - puts the pop into the swing.    Pulling low and left inhibits a good release.   Transition is a bit quick - need to have some shift to the left leg before starting down - now overlapped rotation and shift - could be a bit more shift to start the backswing or a better push with the right leg to better unweight the lead leg so you "fall" to the left at the top - would like to see the left heel rise a bit in the backswing as you left leg leans away from the target - not intentional but due to the shift and push.  Then add the Vijaaaaaay Singh rhythm.    So not big changes but minor in the big scheme of things.

Not going to lie, I liked the old swing better because your downswing plane was much better. Only needed to be a little less inside on the backswing with that swing. Was a little deep at top with hands but I don’t mind that.

Right now you are overdoing the steep backswing a bit with the club outside the hands and then kind of chopping down on it (out to in path) during downswing.

just my opinion of course

Nobody is suggesting to worry about positions but he’s maxed out the shoulder turn early. So working on a better p3 will help with p4.

Thanks once again for the insight, I feel much better about my swing after all your advice!

I could definitely be over doing it since I tend to go back to being way too flat.

I like the arm position at the top better in the new swing. Shorten up the backswing and it'll be even better.

I like the wrist position a bit better in the old swing. If you could get just a bit more trail wrist extension in the new backswing then you'd look good....it would take away that steepness. You don't need much, just a bit more. Then the rose drill would add even more extension in transition. Getting farther away from the ball may just do it for you...

What shot shape do you play and do have any recent path and ftp data?

Good work on your part    Sure looks like the low, inside, and flat backswing is in the dustbin - that was a hard change for you.  1% better.

Usually play a draw. I've never had my swing analyzed for that type of data. I probably should, but there's only 1 place in my area and I haven't had the time to dedicate.

Played a couple of rounds at a local par 3 but mainly indoors. The low screamer and push fade were my misses.

Yeah, if you want to keep playing that draw then you need to get farther away fromt the ball and get the club less steep...either in the backswing, transition, or both.

You're setup for and swinging for a fade...

If it gets me better contact, I will play a fade. I played a fade until about 3 or 4 years ago. My old swing resulted in a 2 way miss and fat shots.
