What is your 7 Iron swing speed and what iron shafts do you play?

I am about 91 MPH average with a 7 iron. Currently I own a set with C-Taper 125 S+ and a set with Project X 6.0. Both iron shafts feel basically “just right” with the C-Taper being a touch stiffer.
 

I’m considering trying Project X 6.5 soft stepped in my next set as I think it would give me the weight of the C-taper S+ while feeling a tad softer.
 

Shafts I have tried and don’t like

DG X100 - too heavy

Modus 120X - too soft

KBS Tour 120 Stiff - Too soft

Project X LZ 6.5 - felt harsher than I expected

Curious what works for the rest of you out there.

90mph here and in DG 120 S300. I'm just on the wrong side of 50 & moved to the 120's last Summer as S300's were taking their toll a little. 

 

Shafts I Like - Modus 120TX & 125 S, $ taper, X100 120... Softer handle & stiffer tip with nothing fancy in the mid.

I always forget about the Modus 120TX. I did try a demo iron with one briefly and it felt pretty good. Nothing like the 120X.

95-100 mph

 

dgx100 and kbs tour v ten.  S400 or tour v ten 125 in wedges.

px 7.0 are probaly my all time favorites and I’ve shot my best rounds with them.  Too much on my off days at my age.

88-90 and I love the DG120 X100 shaft. I can play the standard X100, but my current set has the 120's in it so that's what i'm playing.

95-96, and LA Golf L-Series in Stiff.

 

Was in X100, honestly shouldn't have left.  Turns out tennis elbow can happen with graphite too...  Liked PX 6.5 when I tried it; never played with it.  I'll probably try HS the X100s soon.

 

Though @Pnwpingi210's point about getting older wears in my brain everyday.  I realize that, since I'm over 50, today is probably the strongest and fastest I'll be at golf, and tomorrow, I'll be a little bit weaker and slower.  Though hopefully better.

 

Oh well, growing old beats the alternative.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

I would love to try the PX 7.0, but hard to come by to demo. I like the KBS so much, not worth buying just to try.

 

Ironically, most around my speed say KBS launches/spins too much. For me, they Launch lowest and spins the least, by a fairly significant amount.

Currently in L series 6 due to some injury stuff. Have been good not great. 

 

Have played a lot of golf with x100s and some with PX 7.0s. I am looking at potentially putting some LS 6.5s or 7.0s in a new set lol

 

Interestingly, I have always been fit into x7s and $ taper 130s but never really got along with either on the golf course.

Your reviews on these sound a lot like mine 10 years ago.  I’m guessing you pull on the handle quite about and have a little bit of an early release or flip?  The tour 130x for me was a good performer when I had that.  X100s snapped left or launch and spin a bunch.  Modus 130 in s or x might be another to try.

86-92 MPH. In KBS tour 120S SSx1 to save money MOI matching. I did try C taper 130x in an Avoda head and actually swung faster after i got a feel for them. However the feel wasn't great. I am tempted to try $-Taper in 130 or KBS tour in 130 just to gain some stablity.

I've been through that transition myself as well and for same reasons. Maybe it's the lower swing weight of KBS Tour that makes it more playable when I am/was too wristy.

I do pull pretty hard from the top, not a super late release but not a flip/early release (based on GCQ numbers anyway). Had that issue with the x100’s as the club would get caught behind me. Caused the hooks for sure.

 

With the KBS tours, ballflight is straight with a reg swing but I play a fade. Mentally I can’t wrap my head around trusting a straight ball, so a fade it is.

I think your thoughts on swing weight is correct. My body didn’t react well to the higher swing weight and potentially the feel of the shaft profile.

A good target for dynamic loft is 70% of stated loft.  I target about 23-24 for a 34 7 iron on stock shots.  28 is pretty high.

Sure thing.  I was around where you are.  Didn’t really think I had an issue since I carried my irons as far as anyone else.    Peak apex was usually 120-140ft on well struck shots.  Great for calm days but wind was death for me.  Flight shots down was always in issue.  Not sure if those are applicable to you, but that was my primary reason for working on it

Currently fighting tennis elbow in my right arm and debating if it’s time for a shaft change. Tried a little bit of everything over past 4 years but x100 just always felt right and Ive loved the flight. Tried to go LZ 6.0 recently and although I loved the feel and flight overall, the shaft is too loose for consistency. MMT and AXIOM 125 are the only ones I havent tried yet that might be fit. 

 

Interesting to read other peoples choices since most are hovering in the same speed bracket so far.

Modus 105 stiff feels great. I previously played DG S300 for years.

I find it a little soft in the mid still, or at least I did at my last fit, the handle & tip are nice though. Have you tried the 125? That's a nice shaft, especially if you like DG.

High 80s to low 90s. Can dial it up to mid 90s when needed.
 

I played X100s for a while until they just started to get too heavy. Have recently moved into AMT White X100s and liking them. Have also liked DG120s. Been considering experimenting with graphite, but I’ve always liked a stiffer tip shaft. 
 

Play weaker lofts, 48* PW. Never had issues with height at those lofts. Bit of a “2000s” philosophy of low launching shaft with weaker lofts.

I'm right around 90. Currently in MMT 125 stiff. Golfer's elbow and tennis elbow ushered me into graphite a couple of years ago, but I still like the S400 in my wedges (54 and 60) since I don't hit full shots with them.

 

Before that and before I had started speed training, I was playing Modus 105 stiff. I've also played Modus 120x and DG S300 and liked those both.

At the risk of chasing numbers, Thanks!  Foresight had a chart of X ball speed to Y AoA yields this result, and it was like a flashbang went off. (Don't even ask me about the AoA/Low Point distance rabbit hole I've gone down recently...)  "Aha!  That's why they go so (multiple expletives deleted) high!"

It might be time.  OTOH, it might simply be time for rehab instead.  Plus getting off mats, ofc.  Flexbar, Tyler Twists and Reverse of same, and lots of dumbbell wrist curls and extensions.  See a sports medicine doc first, naturally.  But that and some nitro patches, fixed mine.

97mph 7iron - DGX100, great feel. I migrated from S400 to these.

 

Tried C-Taper 130X and PX6.0 for reference through my friends club sets.

 

PX6.0 felt too light and almost whippy to me; maybe 7.0 would be different for me.

 

I really liked the feel of C-Taper 130X but they are way less common than X100 so I’ve gone with them.

Last I was measured I was 89-92. I fit into KBS $-taper S+ 125G and also the Project X IO 115g 6.5. I felt with the PX I could go at it or swing softer and I would still make good contact.
