What is your 7 Iron swing speed and what iron shafts do you play?

Recommended Posts

I haven't paid attention when on a LM, but according to Google my 7i swing speed is about 76-78 mph. I use Nippon Zelos 7 shafts. It's what I was fitted into and they've treated me well.

90-94 MPH

LA Golf Bryson Series 125i-5

On paper these should be out of my wheel house, but the obscene stability works very well for me.

Have also happily played Nippon Modus 120s

85-88, AMT White X100 SSx2. Best shaft I've ever played. Played S300 DG for decades before these.

Taking out a Dart V 120 F4 this weekend for testing.

I realize that, since I'm over 50, today is probably the strongest and fastest I'll be at golf, and tomorrow, I'll be a little bit weaker and slower.  Though hopefully better.

I refuse to like this, but as I stare sixty in the face I will grudgingly acknowledge it.  (I also accept the premise behind The Snake Oil Willie Band song “I Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore.”)

Mulling making a change to a lighter, whippier iron shafts because I don’t have the swing speed and strength I once did. After a decade out of the game, club fitting hasn’t gotten less complex.

Has anyone tried Project X 6.5 soft stepped? In theory it sounds like the perfect iron shaft for me. Basically the flex of the 6.0 with an extra 5 grams of weight.

I game C-Taper 130s. 7i carry 180. Other shafts that fit me well:
- X7s (long/ mid irons perfect, short irons are a little harsh - if I gamed these, would flex slope a little softer toward the weedge end);
- Project X LS 6.5 (really nice shaft - a touch stiffer in the handle than CT130);
- OG Project X satin 6.5 and 7.0s. These things were amazing. Probably CT130 predecessors.
- Nippon SPB in X (really stable, firm shaft, great neutral Nippon feel);
- OG Precision Rifle 7.0 (linear, plush, they respond well to hard-stepping, great in wedges).

Do you like 6.0 straight in? I have a 6.5 9 iron shaft in a gap wedge as spinner, so SS 2x, and 6.0 in the rest of the set. The 6.5 doesn’t feel very different except maybe just a touch stiffer in the handle. I think 6.5 might only be 3-4g difference in reality once installed anyway.

Agree.  A soft step px6.5 is almost the same weight as a 6.0 straight in.  It does feel like it loads more than either the 6.5 or 6.0 straight in.

About 92mph

I use KBS Tour lite xstiff. Prefer them over Modus as they have some feels.

Ive noticed that Im not sensitive to iron shaft at all. I demod my irons in S300, X100, KBS $ and C-taper, only the C-taper felt strange.

Im thinking of trying X100s or Tour 130X next season, not sure if my dispersion has gone worse or if its just my swing.

I do like the 6.0 straight in, it’s just a touch light. 125g seems to be the Goldilocks zone for me.

I would try a 7.0 ssx1 or 2.

The 7.0 scares me at my 90 mph swing speed haha. Why 7.0 over a 6.5? I’m probably going to pick up a set of the Rory Protos so the 7.0’s would be a sweet build, I just want them to still actually be usable for me.

6.5 straight in gets you about 123 grams of shaft weight, soft stepping it once gets you down to 121-ish which isn’t that far off the 118-119 of the 6.0 straight in.  Soft stepping the px 7.0 2x probably gets you something that feels softer than 6.5 and weighs about 125grams.  I would build up a tester first.

Another option could be 6.0 straight in and add a few grams lead tape to the shaft to bring static weight up.

Happy to see there are some fans of the DG 120 X100. I think they nailed the X100 feeling at a lower weight, really it’s a fantastic shaft.

84-87 mph 7i here. When I picked up golf at age 38, I had a funky delivery, resulting in very high launch. That plus my aggressive transition (hockey player) put me into DG X100 and later the 120g version.
Elbow and wrist pain made me switch to graphite, and I was shocked how the Steelfiber i95 S needed absolutely zero readjustment period, and feel pretty much like the DG shafts, plus they didn’t throw off my distances because they basically launch just a hair higher, but don’t have that annoying extra kick. I truly love the Steelfibers. A modern classic.

Interesting. So the more you soft step a shaft, the lighter it gets? Why is that?

When your soft step, youre essentially removing another .5 inch of material from the butt end of the club.

example

for a straight in 7 iron you start with a 7 iron shaft that weighs 125 grams at 38.5 inches long, uncut.  You have to cut 1.5 inches off to make it 37 inches in your 7 iron.

for a soft stepped x1 7 iron you use a 6 iron shaft that’s 125 grams at 39 inches long, uncut.  You have to cut 2 inches off to get it to play 37 inches in your 7 iron.

7i for 165-170 middle green.

I had p790s with Recoil SW F4, went to pro243s with modus 105s. Also got the 105s in my mg4s. I liked my old set but would get that occasional rocket.

Got fitted, good numbers/liked the flight, but problem with being steep/ a digger is that sims and hitting off mats don’t always really give the full picture imo.

I hit these modus 105s so high(for me) that I hate it. Definitely plays shorter outdoors. Played in a couple windy days and the ball just floats away. I can’t get that low flight out of them(on purpose). I’m sure others can, but I can’t.

I’m debating going x100/s400 in irons/wedges. Not sure how much of a hassle switching shafts is.

Around 97 mph and play DG X100

Fit for PX 6.5 and C-taper 130X in the past. Never actually fit into DG but they feel better to me and hit the lower launch window I like carrying the same distance so I've just stuck with them. PX great but hit them too high and I hated the weight difference from irons to wedges playing S400. Have tried $ taper 130 before but didn't like them at all, felt very light in the head. C-taper were just garbage feeling shafts in both 125 and 130.

C-tapers definitely make irons feel more clicky. Good for someone that does not like to feel the shaft bend at all.

It is interesting how close together Project 6.0 straight in, 6.5 ssx1, and 7.0 ssx2 are. Only 1 FCM apart from eachother.

If a 6.0 is 120g uncut, and you’re cutting 1.5” off every shaft. Using the 7 iron as an example 120/38.5”=3.117g per 1/2”. Wouldn’t that give you a finished shaft weight of only 111g straight in?
