What is your 7 Iron swing speed and what iron shafts do you play?

If a 6.0 is 120g uncut, and you’re cutting 1.5” off every shaft. Using the 7 iron as an example 120/38.5”=3.117g per 1/2”. Wouldn’t that give you a finished shaft weight of only 111g straight in?

I don’t think the shaft is linearly weighted like that.  Example tip weighs more than butt end.    I think it’s closer to a 1.2-1.5 grams per inch at the it end.

Gotcha. My math was wrong too. In a 38.5” shaft there would be 77, 1/2” segments. So even if they are linearly weighted it would only be 1.55g per 1/2”.

FWIW I think I’ve seen Howard post some actual cut weights of PX and remember 6.0 being usually 123-124 installed and 6.5 around 126. That checks out for me when I looked at static weights of a couple of my sets, one with 6.0 being almost 10g heavier than another with DG 120 X100. Different head weights and grips which I know the weights for make up the difference.

I’ve also seen Howard say it’s about 1.5g removed by soft stepping.

Interesting.

i know the taper tip versions of 6.0 I had all weighed 120 or less and the 6.5s all came in 125 bang on uncut…..zero of the uncut shafts weighed more than the stated weight.  Not as much experience as Howard, but probaly 30 or individual shafts between 6.0 and 6.5 ver the years.

None would be above 120/125 installed.🤷

I’d have to go back and find his post (I think I saw some of his measurements showing 6.0 and 6.5 being very close to each other in weight and stiffness in the PX Wedge thread) but Russ Ryden measured the same with 6.0 being heavier than 120 installed.

edit to add: I also recently tried PX 5.5 and the static weight build was the same as DG 120X100 which checked out the with the numbers below.

I get it.  I’m pretty confident my scale isn’t 4 grams off but could be a couple since it’s just a cheap kitchen scale.

My only experience with the px is withing the last  5 years so I’m not sure what’s going on.   The shafts I’ve gotten haven’t been that heavy uncutt

7i for 165-170 middle green.

I had p790s with Recoil SW F4, went to pro243s with modus 105s. Also got the 105s in my mg4s. I liked my old set but would get that occasional rocket.

Got fitted, good numbers/liked the flight, but problem with being steep/ a digger is that sims and hitting off mats don’t always really give the full picture imo.

I hit these modus 105s so high(for me) that I hate it. Definitely plays shorter outdoors. Played in a couple windy days and the ball just floats away. I can’t get that low flight out of them(on purpose). I’m sure others can, but I can’t.

I’m debating going x100/s400 in irons/wedges. Not sure how much of a hassle switching shafts is.

In my first fitting I was fit into the same shaft and had the same issues. Went to DG120 X100 and found a better more penetrating flight out of it. A lot more consistent, stable feel also. My 7i is a 175-180 club if that helps at all

Currently, based on simulator use during the last couple winters, I'm around 83 mph.  Using XCaliber Rapid Taper 95 stiff, but not sold on them.  In a Golden Ram set, I have 950GH WF (weight flow) stiff.  When I was demoing irons a couple years ago, I had success with Modus3 120 stiff, and will be installing them in one of my sets.

That said, I sense our OP is where I was 10-15 years ago, shaft searching.  Briefly reminiscing...

In 2011, I bought an iron set from 2nd Swing.  Their monitors showed me around 96-98mph.  I'd been playing sets with Rifle 6.5, Precision 6.5, and DGX.  I tried PX 6.5 and even dabbled with 7.0, but I've never gotten along with PX.  Eventually wound up with a set of Super Peening Blue X that I loved, until my speed dropped about five years ago (age 61 now).

I used to have spin problems, the PX definitely helped there.  Even gained distance from the spin reduction.  Just didn't care for them.

Apologies for the old man reminiscing.  👴🤔

7 Iron 82-86 MPH, have tried so many iron shafts over the years that i've started selling putters and sticking with just 1 to buy more...

Currently playing KBS Tour 120 S, seems to be the best for me from a GIR standpoint which is what matters most.

Have played

KBS Tour 120 S- Plays stable, great flight especially in the mid-long irons, plenty of stopping power.  Can get spinny in the short irons, have to be very conscious in the wind of managing spin control

Modus 120 S-Favorite feeling of any shaft i've played, but anything more than an 80% swing went long/left. When tempo is good its an amazing shaft, anything that's slightly on the quick side though was always a problem

KBS Tour 105 X- Great shaft, but moved on because of it being harder to find/discontinued. Paired it with a Tour 115 R+ in a combo set which is supposed to be the same, but mentally struggled to trust it.  High flight, held up to a quick tempo great for a lightweight shaft.

PX 6.5- Awesome shaft on days I moved well, made me want to quit golf on days I didn't. Wanted to go straight but had to swing it hard not to block it right.

Modus 120 X- Just didn't have the same feel of the S, no straighter or tighter was disappointed because on paper it should've been perfect. Felt too clicky and borderline harsh almost like a PX, weird experiences on 2 different builds. Wanted to love it but just never worked.

AMT White S300- Loved the ascending weight feel, gave me confidence in my long irons and more control at the bottom of the set.  Just didn't launch them high enough, great shaft in the wind and for hitting controlled knockdowns just needed more height in the 4-7.

7 iron, 80ish if I’m struggling and am backing off, up to around 86ish when I’m swinging confidently.

Most recently I went with r300 dg105’s because they worked well in either situation.

I’ve used s300 105’s before and they were a bit tighter dispersion with decent distance at the higher speed, but lost too much distance at the slower speed. Old school s300’s were suuuper tight dispersion wise and good distance at the higher speeds, but lost sooo much distance once that speed went down even a little.

I've also got some r300 mid 100’s I’m putting in an old set of blades hard stepped once, and really looking forward to seeing how that works out. Only going to be a random fun set so if it doesn’t work out oh well.

92-96mph

Currently fighting tennis elbow in my right arm and debating if it’s time for a shaft change. Tried a little bit of everything over past 4 years but x100 just always felt right and Ive loved the flight. Tried to go LZ 6.0 recently and although I loved the feel and flight overall, the shaft is too loose for consistency. MMT and AXIOM 125 are the only ones I havent tried yet that might be fit.

Interesting to read other peoples choices since most are hovering in the same speed bracket so far.

I've got a bit more speed and the MMT 125TX are the closest graphite equivalent to X100, IMO, and I've tested almost all of them.  Slight difference I've seen on trackman is that MMT launches just a hair higher and spins less.

Apparently I was missing out by not trying all the options and so far these are the most consistent irons/shafts I’ve ever played.

Ended up going with ZXI combo set and S400 hardstepped 1X and it seems to be working. Going to get the billy bobs sensicore inserts put in the shafts and move to a softer grip for the tennis elbow before moving to Graphite shafts. If this doesnt work I guess I’ll be reshafting or selling/buying another set.

I did try sensicore inserts and it wasn't quite the game changer I'd hope for, but hopefully they work for you.

Yeah, 209 carry on the GC quad. It was the same with the i230, but they were 2* strong. Honestly, I couldn’t care less about how far these go. I am just so happy with how consistent they are! Distance dispersion is unbelievable shot after shot

very similar experience here...

I am swinging the standard length 7i only slightly above 80mph and I like the Modus 120s feeling really much. But if I am not swinging smooth, the ball travels way to the left and mostly 10y longer than my straight shots. I supposed this must be a mistake of my swing and was not thinking about the shaft that much.

I am in the testing of AXIOM 105stiff and 2x soft step, but still in testing phase. the first impressions are better than the Modus 120s. The AXIOM is accepting more swing changes during a round. But I tend to thin it more with that shaft, maybe I need to alter the SW a bit.

Before the Modus 120s was the AMT black S300 which felt ok especially in the shorter clubs with the more mass. I had problems with consistancy from the 7i and longer.

DG 105 stiff felt dead with my swing, was a suggestion at a fitting, but I went with the AMT black.

I still have a set of Steelfiber AM99 regular at home but for some strange reason I am playing noticable shorter with this shaft

I currently game Cobra Darkspeed irons which are strong lofted and a 7-iron this is at 27 degrees, so I wanted to preface that first. I am also using DG TI X100 XS shafts (130g), stock length. My 7-iron swing speed is 105 mph so I have a very fast swing which is more of a curse than it is a blessing tbh. I have gone from a 30+ to a 15-handicap in 1 year and looking to get re-fitted as my swing/game has improved quite a bit in a year plus I want something not as strong lofted, more buttery smooth, and a club that is more consistent with less flyers so I am between T-150’s, ZXI5/7 combo set, Mizuno 243’s, and P770s but leaning hard toward the 243’s…my question is whether or not I should move up to the X7’s as I think I need the heaviest and stiffest shaft I can find on the market. My tempo is fast, iron swing speed is lightning, etc…

Please provide your thoughts as I unfortunately do not have the luxury of getting fitted due to schedule and locale

Best option if you don't have a nearby fitter is to build up single clubs. I like 7 irons to audition shafts. I love the X7 and prefer it to X100. It's in my backup set, which I use for tournaments. Definitely score better with them - straight as an arrow, no jumpers, lasers to the pin. Onlye reason I keep the CTaper130 for gamers is the feel. If you have a heavy, solid strike, X7 may be a great fit. Cheap experiment if you have a spare head sitting around.

Also, if you have that much speed, but are still learning how to control it, blades/ musclebacks are great teaching tools. The sting you get on off-center strikes, and the loss of distance, really help you find the sweetspot more consistently. I still game blades, and can't imagine ever changing. If I make a bad swing, I don't want to be rewarded. I'd rather learn to find the middle more. Can't do that with GI heads.
