Mizuno Custom Order

Was a long time Mizuno guy until a couple years back when I drifted away. Well, I’m back after testing the S3s (should have never left).

 

For those who custom ordered in the last 6mo or so, how’s the build quality and what’s the real world turnaround time on irons these days?

I ordered a set of MP245s and received RH instead of LH. Other than that they were great!

 

Seriously though, not sure if that was on Carl's or Mizuno but they sent the correct irons and all specs were on.

Set of 245s about 6 months ago, took 5 days to get shipping, bang on spec.

My order was a set of 923 Tours back in August and it took a bit over two weeks to get to the shop I ordered it from.  Full custom... shafts, grips w/extra wraps, ferrules, swing weight, loft and lie angles.   I haven't had the loft and lie officially checked in a shop, but my distances are all what I expect them to be and the lie angle test with a dry erase marker looks good, too.  Swing weights are +/- 0.5 from what I ordered and grip thickness is correct.  If I was trying to get picky, I ordered the grips logo down and the are, but maybe not quite as precisely aligned as I'd have done them.  Since the grips are round, it's no biggie, but if I was getting ribbed grips a few of them might be off enough that it would be an issue.

I had a brutal experience with my S3 / T1 order, Mizuno Canada for what that's worth.

 

- I provided specified swingweights, irons were +/- 1 pt off and wedges were +3pts off

- lengths were at inconsistent intervals, some had 5/8" intervals

- one wedge was the incorrect shaft, another was incorrect grind

 

Ultimately, wedges were sent back and shaft / grind was corrected. I pulled all the heads off and found tip weights in 6 of 10 heads which caused the weighting issues. There was excess epoxy in every single head, like 2 inches of goo up the inside of the shaft. Shafts weren't fully installed on all clubs which led to the inconsistent lengths / intervals between clubs.

 

Very frustrating experience but after rebuilding the set myself I am happy. Disappointing experience with Mizuno though, at one point I was told "if you want to be that particular you should pay extra and go to club champion".

 

All that to say, amazing equipment, but have your specs checked once you get your clubs.

Friend had a fitting in John's Creek at the Mizuno Foundry. His custom clubs were delivered in 6 days to his home.  But he lives within 2 miles of the Mizuno factory.  Apparently the Foundry will make your clubs while you wait if everything is in stock.

No.  I haven't used ribbed grips since 1994 or so when I has a set regripped and none of them were aligned properly, so I switched to round and never looked back.

I received my irons from Discount Dans order today. I asked for 1/4” over standard. Only one close was the PW at 1/2” over. 7 iron looks ridiculous lined up at a full 1” over standard. The rest were 3/4” over standard. It’s like they didn’t even try to get them right. No idea on loft and lie but not feeling really good about it. Waited over 6 weeks for this jumbled mess of a set. I asked DD to

tell Mizuno to mail me 7 grips and I will figure it out myself. Also 4 and 5 iron didn’t have the plastic wrapped heads like 

the 6-PW. Paid a lot for crappy work.

Wow, not just me then. See my post above I’d highly recommend pulling everything apart and rebuilding the set.

Not Mizuno custom order related but there’s a pretty well known “golfland” in my area and I took a few clubs there for new shafts/grips. When I mentioned my preferred swing weight I was told they don’t bother with swing weight anymore… I was kind of at a loss for words to say the least

Good news is Mizuno rep is sending me new grips and I’m getting a credit for the repair labor costs. Better than nothing and no point in sending them back if they can be fixed locally. Zero faith I’d get them to specs on a new set anyway.

My Pro S-3s were built perfectly to the specs, though I questioned the length / swingweight from the start and that's turning out to be a bit of an issue. Fortunately, 2nd Swing is awesome is going to do a "re-order" for me with the right specs once we set a time for me to go back up and get checked back out.

This I would agree with.  Also, don't order with the Icon ferrules unless you know they have them in stock (have your fitter call Mizuno to ask).  They won't tell you that your order is backed up in the queue waiting for the ferrules for perpetuity...

Got S23 wedges in the wrong color but kept them. Mizuno UK through Golfonline. 
They‘re notoriously bad at getting the specs right. It’s almost like they do it on purpose. 
 

At the other end of the spectrum, I’ve bought two iron sets from New Level, 3 years apart, and the specs were dead on each time, plus they send you a personalized note and ship out really quickly- 3 days from AZ to Switzerland is amazing.
 

I don’t have crazy requirements, +1/2“ and 1° up. But I’m finicky with swingweight and New Level nailed it, twice. D2-D5 from 5i-LW, with a linear progression that requires half SW points. I don’t really NEED it, I‘m just a bit OCD about it, and was mighty impressed how that was perfectly executed twice in a longer timespan.

That is exactly what happened with me. Had to wait 6 weeks because the ferrules were on back order.

I bailed on the wait and had them built with the standard ferrules...I have since acquired 2 sets of the ferrules and am trying to get my fitter to coordinate with Mizuno to see if they have them back in stock for when they do the rebuild for me, and if not, if they'll let me ship them a set of mine to be used on the irons.

I found out last night that Mizuno has given the master builder / fitter with whom I'm working at 2nd Swing permission to do the swingweighting / rebuilding work rather than 2nd Swing having to place an order for replacement irons.  Not sure exactly what that's going to entail, but I'm going back next weekend to get on the Trackman to get dialed in and specs figured out and then he'll pull them apart and rebuild them.  I'm going to take them some of the Icon ferrules I found online to use in the rebuild...

If I need a replacement for the Pro S-3s at some point in the future, this would check the box on the "bucket list" for my next set of Mizunos.  The Foundry looks like an amazing setup.

My swingweights were all correct, but the Mizuno "standard" length of +1/4" is +1/4" over what I'm used to (though my fitter told me that going into the process).  We're going back to the drawing board and taking the clubs apart next weekend. He's going to hard step them to both take out that extra length of 1/4" and to stiffen them up slightly to bring down ball flight better and give me the best chance to hit down on the ball to generate spin rather than worrying about "fatting" shots and having the club twist offline.
