Lofts on Srixon ZXi5 / ZXi7 Combo Set

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am looking to place an order for 4-6 ZXi5 and 7-PW ZXi7 combo set. I am wondering which clubs should be bent and to what lofts to optimize gapping. I know it always depends on the individual player, but just curious what the general recommendation would be for bending that combo set.

Would it be best to bend the ZXi5 4-6 irons to the lofts of the ZXi7 4-6 irons, or something else? Appreciate the help!

The correct answer is get fit. The close second is that zxi are the lowest spinning irons in their class, so err on the side of weak, I.e. go weak in the 5s to match the 7. I have combo set and went 1 weak in the zxi5. If I had to do it all over again, I would strongly consider going one weak in the 7 and two weak in the 5

I play my 7's at 1 strong in the 9i and PW, but may be bringing them back to STD as i'm playing with wedge gapping. I also ordered my brother a ZXi5/7 combo set and he went STD all the way through, but wishes he went 1 weak in the ZXi5's. His 4i and 5i are just rockets compared to the 6-P.

I'd agree and say you should probably get fit well and get proper numbers, but I know not everyone has access to do this/really cares. So long as they hit a certain number, they're fine. They are incredibly soft so if anything you could order a set and get them adjusted later locally for cheap👍

Why wouldn't you just get them bent to what you want? If you were fit they should do it for free.

Or if it was an online order any shop could do that. Heck who knows if the lofts are even what you ordered anyway.

I special ordered a 60* from another company and it came at 56* and 3* upright.

Probably worth a look.

Just be really, really careful with the ZXi5 4 and 5 irons. Their standard lofts are 22 and 24 degrees, which I just find infuriating -- not even a 3 degree difference?! Come on.

I get the advice from @Ca3l to get fit, but fitters generally only have the 7 iron, so you're going to have to buy the whole set, then go back for a gapping session, to figure out what the lofts need to be.

I would strongly consider replacing the ZXi5 4 and 5 irons at 22 and 24 degrees with one ZXi4 5 iron at 23 degrees. Then, your gapping basically works itself out at the stock numbers: 23 degree 5 iron, 27 degree 6 iron, 31 degree 7 iron, 36 degree 8 iron, 41 degree 9 iron, 46 degree PW. You can bend the whole set weak from there if you want, but at least you start in a somewhat reasonable place. And if you really want a 4 iron, get the ZXi4 at 21 degrees and bend it a degree strong down to 20.

This is what I do but I like the Zxi utility 4 weakened 1 to 24 in that spot. I call it a 4.5 iron. 😂

Yeah that is a good point for op — whatever you choose isn’t permanent, so don’t sweat it too much.

I will def have mine adjusted once I have more reps in and decide the direction I want to go. As has been mentioned in the main thread, these should prob be checked every so often anyway since it’s a softer metal.

People keep saying low spinning, but I think a lot of this is based on people testing indoors off mats. Go hit a zxi7 off grass with a prov1x and tell me thats low spinning. It sits dead on the green. (And I play small firm greens rolling 12)

I probably should have said stronger lofted rather than lower spinning. They’re 1-2* stronger in the mid irons than most of their competition. When I got fit, the fitter bent them 2* weak and spin was fine relative to others

Same here.  I keep seeing them labeled as low spin.  They definitely are lower indoors off mats, but I’ve never had any issues with them where it matters, in the dirt on the course.

The ball you play has a ton do with it was well.

I agree with getting fit, or at least get on a launch monitor.  It’s always good to get your numbers and not just distance and spin.  For me it’s more about what I see when I’m outside.  Does the ball hit my flight window, feel through the turf and can I hit my numbers.

I went 1 degree weak in everything on mine. I see people commenting about the weird gapping between the ZXi5 long irons but there is more that goes into distance than loft.  And the Srixon engineers know this. If there is only 2 degrees difference between the 4 and 5 you can rest assured there is another “allowance” made so that the proper gapping in yardage is achieved. Granted this is probably done via robot testing in a vacuum, so YMMV,  but I tried to stay with at least the closest to what Srixon intended, which is keeping all the loft gaps the same, while weakening them a bit to give me the additional height, spin, look and dialed back distance I was looking for.

That could very well be true, but I would definitely hit the 4/5/6 personally before assuming that. I can't imagine that the faces are progressively that much faster, the CG that much different between the irons that the loft isn't the main driver of gapping.

I've had two sets of 5/7 combos - stock lofts is what I did in my most recent set.  There is more to it than the static loft measurement.

I hear you, but I don't buy it at all. I think they're trying to sell golf clubs, and stronger 6 and 7 irons for fitting bays helps them do that. I had a combo set of ZX5s and ZX7s at one point and the 4/5 gap absolutely was a problem.

Yeah but there aren't exactly that many levers to pull in iron heads that are basically shaped the same. Ping at least takes a stab at this by going up to 5/8" length increments instead of 1/2" when the lofts start bunching up in their i530s, and 3/4" instead of 1/2" in their G440s. Srixon doesn't bother to do this. Dropping tungsten fractionally lower as the irons get longer, like TaylorMade makes a big deal about doing in the P790s, helps a tiny bit, but isn't a massive gamechanger.

If the gapping works for you, that's awesome. At 1/2" and 2 degree loft differences, I'd think you'd need tour-level speed to get proper gapping between those two clubs, but I see you're a +3 handicap so you very well might have tour speed. You know your game and you know your bag better than anybody else ever could.

I'm just saying, I am EXTREMELY skeptical that Srixon engineers have unlocked the secret to making such condensed lofts in the long irons work for the overwhelming majority of people buying their irons.

What did you end up doing? Mine were ordered from srixon centre of excellence and they said they would blend the lofts for me...but I didn't specify how.

Same with me, my fitter actually blended them upon arrival so I am not sure of the specific lofts or gaps. Been very happy with them so far though.

My set (ZXi5 5-7 & ZXi7 8-PW) arrived and not sure what lofts they all are - it's a bit odd that they didn't come with a spec sheet for each club. Measured and seemed to be 0.5 degrees stronger on the 8-PW but suspect it's stock and just a different measuring device showing a slight difference. Rather than asking for anything to be bent I decided to see if I notice any gapping problems first. I've played 14 and really like both the ZXi5 and ZXi7...the 7s feel amazing. I need a few rounds to work out distances and gaps (I'm not a fan of launch monitors as I end up hitting it weird after a few balls).

Again same boat. I did not do a gapping session with my fitter. Opted to have him blend them and then just take them through some rounds to see if I notice any major issues. It has been a couple months and 6 or 7 rounds and I have only been happy with performance. Broke par for the first time in a couple years in my 3rd round with them I believe. Overall a great iron that I will be happy with for a long time. If any gapping issues arise I will have no problem taking them to my fitter to have re-bent to the right lofts.
