23° hybrid and 20° hybrid: same shaft lengths or longer in the 20°?

Recommended Posts

I'm experimenting with a 19~20° hybrid at the moment to replace my 7w on windy days. I just picked up a Titleist TSi3 20° hybrid, and while it's pretty much producing the ball flight and spin numbers I want, I noticed that the length is the same as my 23° hybrid.

So for people who play a similar hybrid gap (like 19~20° to 23~24°), are your shaft lengths the same, or do you have a longer shaft in the stronger lofted hybrid, and if so, how much?

With hybrids, I’ll generally stick with stock lengths. 40” to 40.5” when in that 17-21 degree range. I think at 24 5h range, I’d drop a half inch to 39.5. Keep it about one inch longer than its same numbered iron.

4 and 5w, I’ve always used the same shaft and just swap out the head. 42.5”. This gives the 7w a nice 41.5” spot to be a bit longer than an equivalent hybrid.

All this is only because of the adapter hosels and how easy it is to change shafts and heads. If they were all glued in hosels, I would stick with factory length. I think I’m pretty much there, just a smidge short in 4w/5w length.

1/2" difference would be standard. I also use my 3H for lower shots, hence a Tensel Black. It takes a lot of spin off and goes much lower than my 23* hybrid and my 5W with HXRDUS Black Gen 5.

Yeah, the manufacturers go 1/2” between clubs, which in theory at least should give you a little more speed, and create a slightly bigger distance gap between the clubs. If you’re getting what you want out of the setup as is though, why change it?

Exactly. That's the big question.

I've only just bought the 20° hybrid, and while the numbers in the shop were good, when I took it to the range yesterday, I wasn't seeing a huge difference in distance between that and the 23°.

However, it was windy and the range was playing sort of downwind, so not great conditions for dialling in actual distances.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find an OEM where shaft lengths don't progress by 1/2" (barring one length sets of course).   Sounds like one of them had some customization.

That's what I suspect.

In fact, I think it's the 23°, because I swapped shafts in it early last year, and probably asked for it to be 1/2" longer, to match my iron lengths more closely.

Just have no memory of actually asking for it😂

1” difference works for me. My 24* hybrid is a 4-iron replacement playing at 39”.

I don't have the exact same experience, but with my original 2 driver bag I had both drivers built to the same length as I was expecting one to be a backup. The gapping worked for me by having 4° of loft between them, and probably having a low/low shaft in one and a mid/mid shaft in the other probably helped. As far as hybrids, I've usually had the lower lofted one be a little longer than the next one.

After another little range session (different range and better conditions for checking distance), I'm definitely coming around to the idea of a longer shaft in the 20°, and can sort of see why more than 1/2" would work.

An inch longer might turn the club into something I'm not really looking for (tee-shot bomber), but I'm sort of tempted. It's not too hard to take off length if it doesn't work out.

I'm considering a shaft change. It came with an NSPRO composite shaft for hybrids, and it's is pretty stout. I've a Tensei Orange 80X in my 23°, but this NSPRO shaft feels quite a bit stiffer. I think I'd better off with something similar, or even a bit softer, in the 20°.

I found 19* and 22* hybrids to be a little redundant. I'm only getting about 5-8 yards of carry difference.

Very similar to long irons, there's a point where a lot of amateurs don't have the swing speed to continue to see a full 15 yards of gapping distance between clubs that are 1/2" and 3* difference.

I've added a 7 wood. I'm still tinkering but I'm thinking/hoping the bag will shape out to be something like:

3W:  245

7W:  225

4H: 205

5i: 190

My biggest challenge is that I hit everything high. Once I get into the breeze I lose massive distance. That 7W can fall to 190ish (feels like it's coming down backwards). I might keep the 3H around, maybe even deloft it to 18, and see if it can be a wind cheater for me.

I currently use a 7w, but am facing the same problems with regard to windy days as you. Into the wind, my 23° goes further than my 7w, which is why I am experimenting with a 20°.

I see the problem regarding gapping; I can improve gapping by putting a different, longer shaft in my 20°, and maybe, maybe, delofting it a touch.

Just a follow-up. I decided that the NSPRO composite in the TSi3 20° was a little heavy for my liking, being about 10g heavier than the Tensei CK Orange 80X I have in my 23°.

I decided to find a matching shaft, or something closer to the CK Orange 80X, so I went shopping online and bought a CK Orange 80S that would make my 20° play 1/2" longer.

Being a WRXer, I also couldn't resist buying a CK Orange 70X that would play 1" longer😅

Before they arrived, though, I took the TSi to the course for the first time. Pretty pleased with it, though I do think a bit of a lighter shaft will help.

On one hole, I hit it side by side off the tee with my 7w, which is what the TSi is supposed to be replacing, and found there was about a 10y difference between the two clubs (7w longer). Not unexpected, as I wasn't hitting into the wind, which kills the 7w.

I reckon the longer, lighter shaft will also reduce that 10y gap a little.
