Getting a second shaft for driver to make a “safety setup”

I recently switched to the Diamana BB and it's been phenomenal.  Love your new setup btw with the Augusta green.  Hope all goes well!

I've tried the 'safety' method this year by gaming two drivers and even a mini driver included. I always ended up using one driver as it becomes a comfort thing. otherwise i'll end up with two different driver swings which is a no go.

So I went to PGATSS today and did not end up messing with my driver. The fitter concluded that i had been fit very well into that driver and that swing mechanics were at play. 
 

So we made one simple tweak and suddenly I was bombing shots off the tee:

To me a safety set up is having a second (or third in my case) backup driver set up exactly as my primary one.  If my driver didn’t work for me, I’d find one that did.  Once I find/found mine, I buy multiple versions of it, as I know these things have a short shelf life and I like to use the same driver for many years.

I was fit to a Callaway Elyte with a HZRDUS smoke blue rdx 6s that plays at 45.25. When I hit it confidently and keep my form in check, it works beautifully. But those HZRDUS shafts really seem to demand a confident swing and when my game is a little off and I’m timid with it, I start getting some weird results and needing to choke down for safety. 
 

since then, I discovered in my newer fairway woods that the Diamana BB shaft  is like magic for my swing. I have great clubhead awareness, it’s easier to load, has a bit more kick in the tip to get the clubhead around. I can be a little off, in other words, and still get very usable results. Huge confidence boost. 

So I bought a raw BB shaft (63S)  and am going to get with a fitter to make a “safety” setup for my driver. I figure this one can be a little shorter and maybe I’ll play it early season or when I’m not striking my best. 
 

I need to decide how long to go. Probably 44.5” or 44.75” to make the club a little more controllable. Not sure how to decide this. And then there’s head weight. Should I also be thinking of getting a second set of clubhead weights to swap in when I change shafts? My driver currently plays at a D5. But honestly, I’m probably not a good enough player to notice a slight difference there…

 

How would you approach making a confidence-boosting “safety setup” for your driver?

if you can make room in your bag, I highly suggest a mini driver. I use that way more than my driver now, and can get 270-300 if I really go after it.

I'm glad that you agreed with me happily spending your money on new clubs!

 

Did you try both the GT280 and Elyte Mini? What did you feel different between the two?

The Elyte mini was easy off the tee, harder off the deck and, well, kind of too big. You know? I don’t need two Elyte drivers. While it was more configurable, I didn’t need to do much to the GT, up and weak a bit and it shot beautiful center fades. The Elyte really was more of a miniature driver with the larger body, higher off-the-tee apex and all. The GT was truly something unique, neither driver nor fairway wood but able to stand in for either. I could tell it would be versatile in my bag for years to come. 
 

The carry distance was pretty similar. A few yards longer on the Elyte, but not on every shot. A rounding error really. The Titleist seemed like the proper size for this kind of club and just kind of clicked. When I’m more confident with driver and better in general, it can live on as my over-powered 3 wood. 
 

My Diamana will be cut for it in a few days. Eager to see how that works out.

It's a great looking club. Sounds like you made the right choice!

Oh man, you guys, I’ve spent the whole day on the fairway. 
 

So this is what it feels like. 
 

Had to learn the hard way not to pull the 5 wood for a green approach though 😅
