s300 to x100 for medium swingers

Been a 20 year s300 player in basically all Titleist irons. Haven't found anything better. Driver swing speed is 100-105. I tinkered around with a set of t150 with x100 soft stepped. They feel great. They are obviously more stout, heavier swing weight with a tip heavy shaft, and you definitely have to swing harder. However, dispersion is great and they just feel solid. Theoretically I shouldn't have the speed or transition to use x100 for I'm wondering if anyone in this SS range plays x100, or made the transition from s300 to x100.

Play the X100's then. As long as they feel right weight and flex wise, dispersion and numbers are acceptable to you, go for it. A label shouldn't dictate what shaft you play. A buddy of mine who's scratch has no business playing PX 6.5 LS at his ss but he does anyways and irons are the strongest part of his game. Ain't nobody telling him what to play, lol.

Exactly the same here, but playing AMT. Played S300 for over 20 years, then switched to AMT S300. Got a great deal on a new set of AMT White X100 SSx2, and they were the best shafts I ever played. I'm 61, and swing just a little slower than you.

This is strickly a hackers opinion, but I prefer x100 over s300, they just feel[to me] completely different. I have had the same heads with both shafts and the x100 are more to my liking and perform as well if not better. I don't have a real high swing speed, but I can get quick in the transition.

I'm 5 mph faster but I made the switch from s300's to x100's and I like them a lot. I tended to overdraw my S300's when I went after it, so I swung them lighter. I'm able to swing the X100's harder without worrying as much about that overdraw, so my ball flight is a little straighter and I can get better distance because my swing speed is higher. It's definitely helped on my longer irons.

X100 is basically same weight as S300. If you like the feel, I'd buy a set of clubs with them, don't reshaft. You may find that the feeling during the demo doesn't translate long term out on the course.

Keep in mind, over multiple days of play, like trips where play might be multiple day's in a row, that's when the X weight and flex could present a toll by the end of a day, more so after two. Just sayin... 🙂

Given the nature of my fast tempo, and strength, I've always been on the cusp of S/X flex. There's enough juice in the tank to play several days in a row playing maybe 120g S. But playing X I would be pooped end of day one. Swing speed is not the only reason to play a given flex.

X100 is interesting because it's not so much that it's stiffer than S300 (it is), but that the way the stiffness is achieved makes it play differently. Because the tech is so old, they didn't change flex the way modern shafts do by reducing the weight 5g. Both shafts are essentially the same blank, with the X100 having a 2" shorter tip section, and a 2" longer butt section. Because DG S300 is already very tip stiff, trimming 2" does not make the tip any stiffer. The X100 basically gets a firmer mid/handle section, making the EI profile more linear than S300. Essentially, X100 is a different shaft, even though it's pretty much made from the same blank.

I used S300 for a long time (on the order of 20 years) and switched to X100 soft stepped once in a mixed set of Mizunos a while ago. I used those irons for about 8 years and played some really good golf with them. My swing speed at the time was only a bit faster than yours... probably 108 mph with the driver. Like you, I thought I wasn't a candidate for X100 because I didn't have elite speed, but they worked so I didn't question them. I recently moved away from the X100 only because I wanted to try something a tiny bit lighter.

If your swing speed with a driver is 105, you are probably looking somewhere in the low 90's with a 7 iron. I've found that a 94-95 mph 7 iron speed with an average tempo is a pretty good place to begin looking at X100. You aren't too far off of that. Frankly, if you had a quick tempo, spin issues, or just liked a boardy feel, X100 would probably be fine -- especially soft stepped. I think I'm in a pretty similar place to you. My driver swing speed is in the 105-110 range and I saw decent numbers with the S300, S400, and X100. I opted for the stiff flex because I liked the feel better on partial shots and the few extra rpms of spin didn't hurt.
