Has anyone tried to change PXG iron weight?

I was told by PXG fitter that I could change the weight out in the Gen 7 0311 XP irons I purchased.  Then I called corporate to confirm.  They said "NO" that it is set by the factory.  That I could send them the irons and they could change out the weight.  This is different than the hybrids and woods where all the weights are changeable.   Does anyone know differently?  Has anyone tried to change out the iron weight?  It does not look difficult.

From my understanding, they use a lock tite material to seat the weights in place on the irons vs. on all of the woods, they weights are movable.  I have not tried it, but have heard others that have by using heat to loosen the material.  Good luck.

Aftermarket weights seem to be readily available. I got mine from All-Fit (same company that makes the universal adapters).

 

Yes PXG uses a bit of red loctite but a few seconds of heat with a micro butane torch and the weight easily comes loose. You’ll need a T20 security bit or wrench.

Are the iron weights the same as the hybrid and wood weights?  They are black, the iron weights are chrome.

They’re different. Here’s where I bought my iron weights. Silver matches the chrome finish of the irons.

This, just be careful not to overheat. It doesn't take much at all, just a few seconds then try. If it's still not loose then repeat this process until it does.

Yes it’s the same weight.

The large center weight is the same starting with Gen4 through Gen7 irons. 
 

Some heat and a T20 security bit (has a small hole in the tip) and most come out easily unless PXG got a bit aggressive with the Red Loctite.  
 

If the weight does not start to turn, apply some more heat and try again.
 

It is easy to strip the weight if it is not loose and once you strip the threads they are a pain to get out.

Got me some Gen5 P heads, swingweighting at C6/7 with my chosen shafts, so need some new weights.  Wouldn't you know it?  I've got gobs of torx bits, but no T20 security, so ordered off Amazon.  Amazon has some weights also, for less money than golf places charge.  Fingers cross, some money can be saved.  I'm not crazy about spending $10/head.

I have used the PXG weights from Amazon several times with no issues. You should be good!!

I got the new irons built up.  Broke some rules, but I'm confident.  For one, instead of using a shim or a PXG shaft cap with some .355 Recoils, I chopped off 1/2" of the tip instead, to fatten it up.  Second, I used regular ferrules.  Just under the ferrule, I wrapped strips of fiberglass drywall tape, 3x around, to replicate the collar.  Used generous portions of 3M DP8410NS adhesive, and slammed it all together.  These clubs came with KBS Tour .355 shafts, and PXG didn't use shims or shaft caps, so if they can do it, so can I. 

 

Next the weights.  The originals range between 6 grams and 10.  Gonna trial each club, to see what I need, then order new weights.  

 

Edit: just checked swingweight, and low and behold, everything is really close.  Recoil 95R shafts.  Love those things, they swingweight so nice.  My earlier trial, showing low swingweight, used ACCRA shafts.  Glad I decided to change.  I'm going for D2 in the 5 and working progressively to D4 in the PW.  Basically I'm there, just need a smig adjustment here and there.  Happy!

Wound up at D1 for the 5 iron and D4 for the PW, with a nice, smooth progression between the two end points.

 

There is room behind the weights, or in the hollow pocket in back of the lighter weights, to add lead tape, to increase swingweight.  I didn't need to test the limits, but I suspect a couple swingweight points could be covered that way.  To lower swingweight, I ground down the back of a couple of weights.  This was more difficult, and I was only able to get half a swingweight point out this way.  Point is, some adjustment is possible without having to buy new weights.

 

As a clubmaker guy, I love the adjustability of clubs like these.  Ping has changeable toe weights, so that's nice also.  These systems are much nicer than using hosel weights in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more. Tungsten putty works quite well behind these weights too. I've added close to 2 grams in a couple of my irons but I'm sure there's room for more if necessary. Also, big props to PXG for using identical weights in their woods and putters (I wish the irons were the same). The weights are cheap and have been the same size for years.

That's why I have 2 sets of Edel SMS Pro. Though I have a full golf shop at home making it easy to rebuild clubs to alter SW, I'd rather have easy simplicity of swapping weights.  There is also room behind the Edel weights to stuff in some lead tape bits if needed.

 

Great on PXG to have the same wood weights over multiple generations.  What an unnecessary nuisance when a manufacturer like Titleist or Ping introduce a new Driver/FW/Hybrid lineup and decide to change the shape of the weights for no real purpose.
