Fairway wood head weight

Recommended Posts

I just bought a couple tour issue Paradym Triple Diamond T heads. A 14* which weighs 215g, and an 18* which weighs 219g. Being that these are bonded heads with no adapter, the weight is a little light correct? Will I have to hot melt or get heavier sole weights to get them to a D3/D4 swing weight? I plan to build them at 43” and 42”.

The 14* is a little heavy for a 3wd - 210 gm is considered "standard".

The 18* is about the right weight for a 5wd - 220 gm is considered "standard."

What you might need to get a particular swing weight will largely depend on the shaft weight - and more importantly the shaft balance point.   So you wont know for sure what you'll need until you get the shafts cut to length and dry fit them on a swing weight scale (or use one of the online calculators).

And that doesn't include the potential effect of grip weight - but for the sake of the discussion, for now I will assume you came up with that swing weight target with whatever you consider to be your preferred grip and the shaft you will be using.  And that you're not just blindly using a particular swing weight target irrespective of grip weight or shaft selection or desired playing length.

Lead tape or tip weights are other options to increase the head weight if needed.

The weight of adjustable woods  include the adapters.  The adapter is not a separate item,  it’s part of the head.

I should have added that I am using the weight of my G440 3W/5W heads as my reference point. The 3W is 215g and the 5W is 223g, WITHOUT the adapter. I have Ventus blue 7X and 8X in them. Both swing weight right where I like them around D3/D4.

When dry fitting, do you generally do it without the grip and subtract 9 points from the SW to account for the grip? I generally use a Tour velvet 360 standard which weighs 50g.

Ping heads are sometimes heavier as they often use counterbalanced shafts. Good info and advice from @Stuart_G.

It all depends on how you got your target swing weight or specifically what grip was on the club when you fit yourself for swing weight / head weight.    Ideally, you should get your target swing weight from testing with a club that has the grip you plan on playing.  In that case, use a split grip (also dry fit onto the club) of the same type/weight when dry fitting.

The secondary "ideal" (if the grip is going to be different between the test club and the build) is to take the club you used to fit for swing weight, cut/blow off the grip and measure it on a scale without a grip.  Then use that value as the target.  But realize that that is a "best guess" approach - as to how to deal with a grip weight change.  For some, additional tweaking of the head weight might be needed with the new grip.

I suppose all this speculation won’t change the end result. Either they’ll turn out how I want them, or they won’t and I’ll have to adjust the weighting.🤷‍♀️

Ventus blue I think is a little high balance point.  I’m guess you don’t have access to a swing-weight scale to dry fit?

Is it really? Wouldn’t have expected that. I do have access to a full build shop. I was just wondering if the heads seem light as they are light compared to my G440’s. They’re still on the way, I plan to build them next week with Tensei Raw Blue 85TX’s. I also ordered a Raw Blue 95TX that I might try in the 5 wood.

Yup.  According to another member that builds and has access to the s3 database the 7x is very similar balance point to the tensi pro orange, with the same balance point measurement and being within half a swingweight.

Here is Ventus Blue+ vs 1K pro orange/white from golfshaftreviews. Looking at the balance point, Ventus Blue is more in line with 1K pro white compared to Orange. Which to me doesn’t show the blue as a high balance point.

I thought you said Ventus blue 7x not Ventus blue 7x+.  They are different balance points it looks like.

i was comparing blue 7x to pro orange (not 1k)

Gotcha! Looking at the OG Ventus blue, you are indeed correct when they get to the 70 gram class. The balance point jumps way up.

I'd guess that should be "as high of a balance point."   If you really want to check if it's a high vs more "standard" or classic balance point, check it against the classics like the original Diamana white board or blue board.

Isn’t this another example of the cart before the horse?  I’m just trying to learn here but it seems @Stuart_G and @Howard_Jones are always telling us swingweight is not a goal that matches across sets.  And yet here we have another example of someone wanting their build to come out to a preconceived swingweight.

I can tell you I’ve tried A LOT of clubs. And any time something had a swing weight lighter than D3, I could tell something was not quite right (at least with woods). I just can’t feel the head enough and my timing is off. And yes, I hit many of these clubs before checking the swing weight. Heavier swing weights like D5/D6 don’t bother me as much, but I can tell pretty instantly if it’s too light.

I may be a bit more sensitive than the average person to the specs of my clubs.

That all depends on how the OP got his target swing weight.    If it was obtained through some previous experience with a fairway with the same shaft weight and same grip and very close to the same playing length,  then it can be a perfectly valid target for any new build.   It's only when those things like shaft weight or grip weight changes (or bigger playing length changes), or it came from a different club type (iron or driver), those are the times that the previously known swing weight values become less useful as a target.
