G430 7 iron Trackman results — update (not good)

Hey guys. I just need a quick check on some numbers. I hit five shots with each shaft, G430, 7 iron. DG105 regular (blue, says 430 regular), DG105 stiff (red, it’s labeled 430 120 stiff, but it’s actually 105 stiff) and DG120 stiff (purple, labeled 430 120).  I am 57 years old, swing speed with the 7 iron about 72 mph).  The carry distance seems a bit low to me (could be a crappy simulator ball).  I think I know the best one but would like others’ thoughts.  Thanks.

  • e-man changed the title to G430 7 iron Trackman results — update (not good)

So I played my first round this morning with the G430s with the DG105 shafts in reg flex. They felt great in the fitting bay yesterday, but for some reason, they did not have the same feel on the course. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s almost as if the club in the simulator was a little softer, maybe more broken in, than these? I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I’ll keep at it and see if the results are better tomorrow.

If you like the DG105, reg seems ok for my understanding and your swingspeed. Did you try other shafts as well? DG105 is not for everybody.

a lot of people have Problems to swing freely in a sim, depending on the space around. So in this theory you should see a bit more distance outside.

I did try other shafts, including the AWT 2.0 which didn’t feel right at all.  But these DG105s may not be right for me.

The Problem with AWT shafts (that I personally like) is, you get fit with a 7i but the AWT needs to be feel and tested in long and short irons as well, because of the weight differences.
Same with all other shafts, what works in a 7i can feel Heavy in the 4i or too light in the PW.

I completely agree, and what’s interesting is that when I tested the AWT shaft a few weeks ago in the seven iron, it felt great, but that was my main concern is that how do you buy a shaft that is fitted for you in one club that may feel completely different in the others. It seemed like that was no longer an issue for me the last time I went in there because the AWT did not feel good at all and the DG105 felt great. I just don’t get it.

The blue circle. Did you try any graphite shafts? The decent angle on all three are still too low. Graphite will give you a bot more speed, higher launch, and higher spin which increase your carry yardage and decent angle.

So sound and feel are your concern?  How was ball flight?  Distance?  Stopping power?  Those are what puts the ball in the hole.

And what ball are you using?  If sound and feel are a concern of yours with those clubs, you should trial the softest ball that works for you.  I have some old Wilson Duo U balls that are marshmallow soft.  Those were my favorites when playing my old G425's.

I should’ve been more specific. When I say that they didn’t feel right it’s because I wasn’t finding the middle of the face at all. Now, maybe that’s a function of me and not the shaft or the club, but it did feel like I had to work a little hard at impact to hit the ball and that’s not how it felt in the simulator.  I’m playing a regular prov1.

The blue circle was the DG 105 regular flex. And I did try graphite shafts, which were definitely easier to swing, but the dispersion was all over the place.

Ok, then I would recommend trying the AWT 3.0 Reg, or Elevate 95 in Stiff or Reg (play a bit soft but DEFINITELY increase peak height and spin)

I have the 90 day playability guarantee, so I can go back and try other shafts, but this whole process just bugs me because that was the point of what I did the other day and definitely landed on what I thought felt best to me.

The fitter should have seen the low decent angle and recommended a shaft to that. Unfortunately they didn’t and honestly after the results of the 105 R trying the AWT 3.0 or Elevate should have been the first options to try. Putting you in heavier options that would lower your decent angle and spin makes no sense.

I’m the same swing speed as you snd those carry distance are very good for that speed.  I typically get 128 to 130.   What was your ball speed.

I agree with @hammergolf on your landing angle being low.   I find most DG shafts aren’t a good fit for my speed.

As for steel. Consider either Nippon 950GH or KBS Tour Lite.  As for graphite.  MMT and SteelFiber both generally are very good on dispersion.

Honestly, at this point, I may just go back and exchange these for the 925 hot metal standard with the nippon 950 GH neo shaft.  I’ve been on this merry-go-round for quite some time now and it’s time to be done. I’ve gone through so many fittings and so many demo sessions and each time the result comes back different than the one before. I’m a good player with an index currently at 6.3 and it’s just amazing that so many different fitters can provide so many different results.

That would be a good combo.   I get it about fittings.  I am lucky to be 10 miles from Kevin Kraft one of the top fitters in the country for 2nd Swing.   He fits me for anything non Titleist.

I get the frustration but I assume you picked the g440 irons for a reason. Just try them with the other two shafts and you’ll get the results and performance you need. Adding more variables will just add more confusion.
