I230s were directly cross shopped to blueprint s which is a direct competitor of the s-3. These are largely in the same category. Putter is saying these are gi irons? 🫤🤔

S3 is small and a single piece forged cb

 

i230s are large, multi material and have significant offset.

 

the overlap between the players cross shopping those is small.  S3 is going to look way too small for a i230 player, and the i230 is going to look way too large to the s3 players - in general

 

None of them are game improvement

Yes they are at the different ends of the spectrum within players irons but as a result for people looking for these types of irons they do get compared to one another based on forgiveness, workability etc. This is why folks like TaylorMade and titleist and even Ping before made such an effort to hide the tech and make them all look nice and understated. They trying to give these players the different options.

Not gonna lie. They’re already growing on me…. Had the same thing happen with latest gen Chevy Tahoe and Silverado. Thought they were hideous at first and eventually came around.

I'm definitely in the camp of these being U-G-L-Y but if they perform, give me the right spin numbers, get through the turf well and are super forgiving for their size, I'll be gaming them. I game a Lab putter, raw rusty wedges and a beat up Titleist fairway because they work. I'll get over a strip of carbon for sure if I shoot better scores because of them. Anyone that says different I'll enjoy taking their money on the course.

I’ve been a long time Ping fan, even following tour players such as Harris English. Ever since my first set of Eyes and even better Eye 2’s, some time way back in the Jurrasic era. I even bought sets of Eye2 for each son, thinking they would be lifetime clubs (was not on GWRX then!) and they would be phased out. 
 

The i2xx series has always been, for me, the next step away from blades such as my now very lonely Mizuno’s.  Still maintaining a classic look with as thin a top line as possible and attention to bounce/turf interaction.  The new i240’s look closer to the G series, or god forbid the Apex irons. Gag.

Had no intention of purchasing new irons anytime soon, but my preorder will be in day 1 now simply because this thread.

I’m gonna be a day 1 preorder too, and I’ve been one of the vocal complainers about the looks in this thread, haha.

 

I hate the carbon. Hate the red i. Absolutely hate them both. But I do agree these look phenomenal at address. Love the shape, the finish, everything about them from that view. 
 

And even though I’d trade away performance to get rid of the hideous carbon, I know I’m going to get extremely forgiving irons that have traditional(-ish) lofts and plenty of spin. And, hopefully, a still higher than average VCOG.

Would have love to have seen the WRX thread on the Eye2 irons when they were released.  I am sure it would have been an absolute bloodbath.  Such a unique design but aesthetically pleasing?  It's all in the Eye(2) of the beholder...

I'm really looking forward to this release. I have gone back and forth exclusively between Ping and Titleist since the Karsten III’s and the DCI’s. 
 

I’m heading back into my Ping phase and can’t wait.

This isn't too far from how everyone *freaked out* when the 230s launched.

 

It's a rite of passage around here.

 

They're clearly back to toaster inserts as the go-to. I find that interesting given that the toe plugs were supposed to obviate the toaster. Now they're going all in on both.

 

The tech story is going to be similar; hit it all over the face and you're good. They are ridiculously good irons. But for those who just can't take a badge with some CF and act like it's OMG Cleveland VAS!!1, you don't have to buy them.

 

But after they publish the tech story, you'll try them, then tell us how the 230s are really good, and the circle of i2 life continues.

Confirmed today that release date is July 17. Spoke with someone who hit and saw them in person side by side with i230 and was told they look great in person and that they are slightly smaller profile than i230 (getting a little closer to blueprint S while staying true to the i2XX line).

If I was interested in ping, I'd ask one question - "Are they better than last generation?"

 

I understand people wanting to like what they're looking at.  For me, that begins & ends with "What it looks like at address."   Period.

A touch of lead tape can cover the carbon and a tiny drop of black paint will take care of the i.
