New Ping i240 irons - 2025 Memorial

Yeah, I think this is right on target. I'm a big Ping fan and have loved the i230s. I've said I'm probably going to buy the i240s -- I'm probably just always going to buy every release Ping comes out with in the i2XX line, to be honest -- *but I hate, hate, hate the carbon badging.

Equipment manufacturers choose to roll their new products out with pictures first, weeks or months before consumers can hit them. So yeah, of course people react to the visuals first.

Nothing a sticker, magic marker or lead tape can’t fix! 😊

*sorry, couldn’t resist! 😆

Ping is an engineering company.

Ping doesn’t release a new version unless it has technological advances over the iron it replaces.

Or sales of the current iron begin to drop off.

Ping is a business and they will release product to drive sales. The fallacy here is that because they are privately owned that means they are in it for the engineering versus net profit. If that were true they wouldn't come out with new clubs on a predictable release cycle at certain times of the year that are shown to increase sales.

Ping saying they are an engineering company is true and its also a marketing ploy

I've seen them in person, and they aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Agree that the carbon wasn't a good choice.

Well put.   If all there is to go on are visuals, that's what people are going to focus on.

And learning that the carbon is purely cosmetic is disappointing in that it's so un Ping... that would be like putting turbulators on hybrids and FWs when they do nothing... oh, wait.

One thing I've read that I found interesting is the statement that use of a plastic rather than metal backing is less cost than significant weight savings.   If Titleist had been more vocal along those lines it could have saved them 2 generations worth of T2xx grief.

Loved the i230, good distance control and spin, maybe ballooned here and there but found BPS to basically do all of i230 things in a compact and better sounding package, Pro S3 looked and sounded better to me, bit worse forgiveness although it still does well with the thin heel. probably would have picked BPS over the S3 but opted for 923 tour due to availability / price and a very negligible difference between it and S3.

In a strict comparison of the 923T to i230 I think the best review I can give is there has been very little transition time. 1 degree of loft difference means distances have not been all that different. interestingly I almost feel like I was spinning the i230s more but I don’t have data to validate that, might just be hitting the 923T a touch lower due to COG differences.

How would you compare BPS to i230 on mishits in terms of distance loss? I don't care if it's missing east/west as that is my fault and should be punished, but I have always been pleasantly surprised with the i230s that toe bangs only lose 5-8yds and pulls only gain maybe 10-12yds.

As a caveat the day I did the fitting just happened to be really flushing it but from what I could sense, the ones I caught in the toe didn’t feel overly miserable or drop off the planet, probably in the 5-10 yard loss range.
I know that cool clubs did good robot testing on Blueprint S across the face so that might be better insight than my anecdotes

edit : went and found the 90mph tests and the scatter charts for BPS and i230 do look quite similar

Saw them sitting on a table in our sim room yesterday and didn't realize they had been released. They were next to our old clubs and looked the part. That being said they looked nice from address

The simple truth is. Some look better from behind, some look better from the front… And we all have our preferences

Id classify these babies as butter backs. Everything looks great, butter back.

Hit them today. They are fine. Not as good looking as i230, felt a bit better. No noticeable difference in size / offset etc.

Won't knock my BPS out of the bag.

Can you explain the differences in sound/feel? One of the YouTube videos (I can't remember which one now) seemed to really showcase the different sound -- seemed like the i240s are maybe deeper and quieter? But I know it can be hard for the mics to pick up the nuances of sound like that.

Driver: Titleist GT3 10° @10.75° | Fujikura Ventus Red 6X

3W: Titleist GT3 15° | Fujikura Ventus Red 7S

7W: Titleist GT2 21° @ 20.25° | Fujikura Ventus Red 7S

Currently testing for GolfWRX: Wilson DYNAPWR Carbon 3W at standard 15° and 5W at +1 19° with Ventus TR Blue 7S, DYNAPWR 4H at standard 22° with Graphite Design Tour AD DI 85S

For me, feels like a little more meat behind the hit (maybe from a lower cg?), which gives it a little more of a thud. I thought it felt good. Slightly thuddier than i230.

I agree with others that it was more of a thud at impact and sounded quite nice IMO. Feel is sound anyway. I thought the i230s felt pretty good anyway.
Havent seen any real forgiveness benefits over BPS anyway TBH.

Yeah. I was in the mix during the initial roasting. I’ve seen far worse looking heads get far less roasting.
I think it was the ‘pile on’ effect and ppl that perhaps just don’t like PING in general. Also a couple members seemed highly offended by the negative comments. So I’m sure a few were just trolling/poking those guys.

I’ve been a Ping guy for a long time, most recently i210’s. That is, until I bought some Zxi5’s a couple of weeks ago. Still not a fan of the 240’s.

So I thought one of the main gripes with the 230 was that the micromax grooves (I assumed) made them too spinny for some players.

Now I’m seeing some early tests and the 240’s are spinning a little more and launching higher with the groove change. I assume there is a lower cg, but other than that, I’m curious as to the reasons.

i need the Jerty Bird to explain the tech to me.

I also thought this. I heard from somewhere (either in this thread or a video) that the micromax grooves spin really well out of the rough, making the spin delta between rough and fairway lower, but out of the fairway the micromax grooves actually reduced spin a little. The higher CG on the i230s could have led to the increase in spin. So new grooves + lower CG would account for the higher launch and higher spin at the same time.

Got to hit the 7 iron today. Currently in BPS. Spin was a couple hundred lower on i240 vs BPS for me. Definitely felt a little easier to hit than BPS. Low on face miss wasn’t punished too much. More confidence in i240. Same shaft in both.

Getting 5 and 6 iron to combo. May get 7 after some on course action.

Honestly didn’t mind the carbon in person.

Hit the i240 and 230 side by side today. Found an awesome i230 set just one color code off so I went with the 230. No dif in distance for me between both 7 irons. Spin was a little higher in the 240. Once my 230 set comes in they are going to Ping for a power spec and blue dot treatment.
