How does halt to new student visas impact college golf?

 

seems like women’s side would especially get hit hard?

If international visas are paused or no longer allowed, that is a really significant % of competitive college golfers

Not only womens loads of teams habe ints. Ours Currently has 3 and a 26 is inbound as well.

The halt is for new student visa interviews and is said to be temporary until a social media policy is created for more thorough vetting. If it becomes a permanent thing and there aren’t any more international students it would have a big impact on college golf. Some teams on the men’s side are 90-100% international.

Yup.  Gonna have to go somewhere else.

 

Anything that happens is going to be temporary... different people be in charge before long.

 

On a similar subject, heard that lawsuits coming to the NCAA to restrict public money going to non-citizens - not a visa thing, a scholarship money thing... so different, but related.  Private people filing them.  Need settlement to happen first.  No idea the merits, or arguments, just what I heard at a high level.

 

I would distrust anybody who says that they know what is going to happen.  There is no way to know.

In the end, it won't matter except to any kids who don't get visas.  The top programs will still get the top players and the landscape will be about the same.

 

It is similar with Mens BB and the G League - Kansas, Duke, Nova, etc. all still get the best kids... just not the same ones with some of them going pro.  If NFL creates a minor league some day, SEC, Ohio St, etc. will still get the best kids too.

Dunno about lawsuits, but the move to restrict funds to foreign athletes has been in the works at various locations for some time.

I know that regional or local stuff has happened.  The aim of this was to restrict it at the NCAA level as a whole.  Again, no idea even what the merits are.

 

You better delete that link.  It says "law" in it and people around here think that stuff like that is bad, even though no discussion around college golf has ever gone beyond just facts and links to get nasty or derisive and actually cause a problem on the board (at least in the last year or so that I have paid attention).  🙂. People who subscribe have it in their email, which is about as good as it gets to talk about college golf on a golf board.

Talked with my friend who is high up in an athletic department and asked about the international scholarship lawsuit that I heard about.  He said that rumors are a state(s) AG to bring it against NCAA so that all states can act the same way.  Some states want this, but don't want their schools to be at a competitive disadvantage if they spend on citizens instead of not.  Dude has always let me know when they are sure about something, but this was not one of them... so hearsay most likely.  It all makes sense with the smaller local cases.

My issue is that we are bringing international kids in, training them (specifically in Olympic Sports), then sending them back to their countries to compete against us. This bleeds over to Golf in competition. The argument of "Don't you want the best?" is a weak argument in my opinion. Great example is Basketball. No one watching would know any difference from competition levels by only taking American kids. The game and the competition would not suffer in the least. It gives us to train our home grown kids to dominate in international competition.

Nobody is going to care until Alabama or Georgia recruit a QB from Mexico or China.

Jackson He - Football - Arizona State University Athletics

 

This was a few years ago, before NIL etc, and he did walk on to the football team....something that might not happen in the future again.  But you never know....this could be the one that opens the floodgates of Chinese football stars taking spots from the Jalen Milroe's and Arch Mannings of the world.🤣
