4i vs 7w vs 4h vs Driving Iron

I've regularly cycled between all of these finding the right one. For many this will be that 190-220(ish) yard club or even longer for those faster swingers here. No matter the swing speed, this is a key part of the bag that has the most options to fill the role. It is the club with which you are extremely comfortable. It can hold a green, can perform from iffy lies, and is suitable off the tee--all from a relatively far distance. You would never leave home without it.

My "set" 4 iron belongs to my previous bag of clubs.  It is for rolling the ball onto the green or fairway, just like my 3HL, but with more consistency than the wood.

I don't expect anything longer than my 6 iron to stay on the green, though this may change this year as I work on increasing my driving distance.

I have high lofted woods that may eventually be used for long approach shots as used by LPGA players.

P790 4i at 22*, KBS Tour 120g! (The rest of my irons (I only carry seven sticks total, four irons) are either p770s or a p7mb (9i) with $-taper 120s.) Currently go straight from 4i to driver. Great club. 215-225 club for me. More than once this year I've been on or pin high just off the green, 420/440 from the tee, off of back-to-back well-struck 4irons! Almost all my in-house slow-motion technique work is with this club. It's becoming a favorite!

1. Top of my bag rotates at times but my shortened 7 wood consistently stays in the bag. Currently playing it at 22.5*.

2. I can approach with 5 wood if I’m hitting into a strong breeze.

3. Depends. Tight tee shots will be 2nd driver @ 13*, 7 wood, or 5 iron (24.5*).

I have a 3H at 20*, a 7W at 21* and set 4i at 21*, the 7W kicked them both out of the bag. Launches high and hold greens much better than both of them.

I've got a 7w at 21 degrees and 5i at 22 degrees. The 7w is longer and a high ball flight. The 5i is sometimes the choice for tight driving holes 350 yards, or less. The 5i has a lower, penetrating ball flight and is better in heavy wind.

The 7w from the fairway launches high and stops on a dime. I've never been better from 200-220 out in my life as I am with the 7w. My 4i is shorter flying and won't stop on the green. It's currently retired.

1. 21° OG uw

2. no, I have a 4w and a 18° UI that I can also hit off the turf depending on situation

3. I almost always play driver. I don’t have any tight holes that would take it out of play, I just aim away from trouble.

Old reliable is the Cobra OS 3-4 hybrid from 2017. Set at 20.5 degrees. Try to replace it every once in a while but always finds its way back in the bag.

I'm fully a 7 wood convert. Once I realized that it's so workable, it's become a favorite in the bag.

As they say, golf is a game of misses, and my misses are so much more playable with the 7 wood vs. any other option at 20ish degrees.

One of the par 5s at my home course is such a fun little hole.  OB very tight to the right and the fairway slopes to the left with a massive Oak tree 10 yards off the front left of the green.   I always aim out left to avoid OB.   I've got 240ish yards on a side hill lie and have to get up and over trees, then also carry it high and far enough to get over the big oak in front.   Only one club I could do that with.

Definitely one of the spots in the bag i've messed with the most. Per my signature I flip between a utility iron and a modified set 4-iron. Both 22* with the set iron playing slightly longer to enhance the fact that it flies higher/spins more compared to the hotter/flatter flight of the utility iron. I mostly use the latter, but it's neither the longest club I feel comfortable hitting (I used to go down to 2i here) nor the one I use for tight tee shots (prefer 5w there). It's a solid 230y club for long Par 3's, short Par 4 position tee shots, or longer Par 5 approaches (especially when wind is involved).

Really depends on my swing improvement and how much I can stave off Father Time at this point.  Currently, per the sig, I have both a 4I and a 4H.  Couldn't go 4-iron to 3-iron then, though I still have the clubhead, but might be able to keep up the 5 mph gap now.  Shrug.

Enter 4 hybrid.  I have no idea why the Titleist guy didn't stick me in a 3 and loft up vs 4 and loft all the way in one direction.  The 4H is about 1.5" longer (40.5 vs not quite 39) and about 2 degrees steeper for now.  So it goes quite a bit further than the iron.  Much easier to elevate the 4H.

Above those, I've a 5-wood that's easier to elevate still.  Perfectly fine with attacking a green with a 235-240 cover number, and expecting it to stop.

The 3-wood is what I use to just get out there from here.  Also use it to go left off the tee vs go right.  Like a Weimaraner chasing a tennis ball, it might stop if you yell at it, but it probably won't anytime soon.  It can go high, but it's a superpower that I, like The Greatest American Hero, lost the instructions for on how to do it consistently.

I carry a ping 3h tweaked to 20.5 loft, but I’ll play up to my three wood off the turf and for tight driving holes it depends on the shot I need - sometimes I take three wood, sometimes five wood,  sometimes the hybrid.

Ping G440 - 4h is longest club that’s not a wood in my bag, but comfortable hitting approaches that land soft enough with my Ping G430 5 wood. I use the 4h and 5wood for shorter and tighter tee shots as well. If I had another spot in my bag, would probably have a driving iron  because I prefer a lower trajectory if trying to fit in a tight tee shot.

I am using T200 17' 2i @39.75", and stock T100 21' 3i and 24' 4i.  Still have enough juice to make them work, so haven't needed to get my head around hybrids or utility woods.

PS: last weekend, stinky drive off tee, 200+ leave, pin in front.  Ball above my feet 1', hit a sweet 4i just short in front of green, LW to 2' for tap in, par!  Damn, I love this game.

I use a 3 hybrid in this slot lofted up from 19 to 20 degrees, it fits in nicely gapping wise and is super versatile.

Some of the new long irons look quite tempting, certainly worth a try.

1- Titleist T150 3 iron is 19*, the 4 iron is 22*
2- I am comfortable hitting approach shots with a 3 wood, if that’s the shot that’s called for.

3- On a tight driving hole, I will usually not hit driver; rather go 3 wood, or 3 iron.

4i is always in the bag.

5w (18*) stays unless 2i or 7w come in depending on par 3 lengths or amount of wind. I have more 240+ approaches on long 5s with the 5W, but if the course is short will play the 7w (21*). Same shaft for both clubs, just swap heads.

Currently play 2 4h after my 3wd.

One has been a 21° titleist ts2, but can come in a touch hot into greens, picked up a tsr1 20° head to give a shot at filling that spot. I play this club with a 3h length shaft. I believe it plays 40.5"

The other is a ping g25 23°, I play this with a kbs c-taper lite at 39.5" it is a true 4i replacement for me. Has been really solid into greens and off the tee in tight situations.

Honestly I'd put a 2nd g25 in the bag if I found a clean 27° head to replace my 5i as that can be pretty inconsistent for me.

For several years, it seemed the 4h was the go to for every bag as players slowly began to phase out their 4i. The default bag to build was 3W, 5W, 4h. Now it's interesting to see we are turning another corner with the popularity of the 7W.

I second guess this spot quite often in my bag. For the last year, I've been constantly returning to the Apex UW 21. It works really well, but can miss a little right at the wrong time. I really like the Callaway TD 7w even though they are a little hot to gap nicely into a 4w. I'm exited to try out some of the 7w options this year now that every large manufacturer is offering a marquee 7w. High and soft is the goal.

My club in this spot is a Titleist TSR1 fairway wood at exactly 20 degrees. I'm not sure if it's technically a 5 wood or a 7 wood in that model because the TSR1s have some lofts that don't line up with the 18* and 21* conventions.

It is my longest club that I would use for an approach shot off of turf. And although I'm sure I could use it off the tee when called for it, I more often pull out my 24*hybrid for that job.

My 7 wood.

It has hit many memorable shots over plenty of seasons. It's one of my favorite clubs in the bag.

I have used my mizuno clk 2 hybrid in a few different configurations. By far my favorite is set at 14deg. I play it like a 3wood off tee and use it on long shots on approach or layups.

I also sometimes bring a 19deg clk set to 20 deg.

Also my set 4i is 19deg. I use that when I want to drive a lower shot. Or I can put uo in stance a little and hit a high fade about 190yards or so.
