60 degree wedge grind help

Recommended Posts

I’m really struggling to find a 60 degree wedge with a sole/grind that works for me.Ā
Ā

I have Taylormade mg tw 56 and 60 and absolutely love the 56 but the 60 is love hate depending on ground conditions. If it’s dry and hard it’s fine but any sort of moisture or softness in the ground I am struggling a lot with chunks or digging too much.Ā
Ā

I have tried vokey D and M grind and not getting on with them at all. The M is ok if it’s wet but feel I struggle to get decent contact with it. I really liked the ATV grind on the original hi toe but not used one of them for a number of years so not sure if that’s still the case. Also tried a number of mizuno wedges and feel they have too much sole width/bounce for me as well.Ā
Ā

I have tried increasing the loft of my tw 60 to 62 to see if the extra bounce that would add would make any difference to the digging but it hasn’t.Ā
Ā

in an ideal world I would love to have the tw 56 sole on the 60 but that’s not an option. Anyone able to suggest anything that would be worth trying in the 60?Ā

The TW 56 I believe is 11* of bounce and the 60 is around 12*. If you’re steep and digging with these high bounce wedges, there’s only a few 60s that have more bounce. Both are made to hit square to open shots well on different types of lies and conditions.
Ā

The Vokey D is high bounce (12*) which would be close to the TW60 and M is low bounce (8*) which might not be a good fit. I didn’t get on with the Mizunos either.
Ā

Trying a slightly wider sole with medium bounce might work but you may be releasing early which is causing the digging with the higher bounce wedges.

Try the SB. It has more bounce but a bit of heel grind to still play open face shots.Ā

I don’t think you have understood what I have said, the 56 tw is perfect but the 60 plays like it is lower bounce because of the shape of the grind so it digs on me.Ā
Ā

the vokey D and M are too much bounce for me and I struggle with striking low on the face and feel like it doesn’t get into the ground enough.Ā
Ā

I need something either similar to the 56 tw which I love or somewhere in between the tw 60 and the vokey M.Ā

T grind Vokey is low bounce, can be fanned open, and played with sq face for the shallow deliverer of ball.Ā  I play mine at 61/5, often from a slightly open position.Ā  I can be uber aggressive here as the spin it generates (TP5 or Chrome Tour) is ridiculous.Ā  Can almost fly it to the pin and it hops and stops.

Interesting take, especially regarding "M" grind.Ā  Try opening the face various degrees, and keeping your hands steady; two functions that most people struggle with.Ā Ā If you're digging, like many users, your hands are steady, and or you're not properly using the club head bounce.

Ā

The predominant reason I have played 58.8 "M" grind since 2016 is the sole grind works great in tight and dry conditions as well as soft or wet; all that changes is the face angle.Ā  I played 60' for years until I switched to 58'.Ā  Ā

I hadn’t actually considered a lower bounce vokey because I was digging with the tw 60 but considering that I can’t get a M grind into the ground and find it bounces up into the ball on me then maybe a lower bounce vokey might be a good idea.Ā

I just can’t seem to get on with the M grind in dry or firm conditions. It just seems like it’s too much bounce and I can’t get it into the ground and struggle with low on the face strikes. It seems to be ok in wetter conditions but the minute it dries up I can’t use it.Ā
Ā

I feel it bounces up into the ball and I can’t get a decent strike.Ā

I live in SOCAL, mostly dry and windy, except our winter has wet days.Ā  My "M" has 8' of bounce, which is low enough for me, if I need more, I open the face.Ā

Ā

If M is too much bounce, check out "T".Ā  I have 58.4T and appreciate the pre-worn heel area, only don't use it much so it sets in the trunk.

Ā

Maybe the difference is how you position and attach the ball.Ā  I seldom drive the clubhead it into the turf, or use a full-on-swing.Ā  If I need a full swing I pull F52.12'

what’s the difference between a T and an L grind into the vokeys?Ā

Ā

Stole this from another poster:

Ā

The T Grind is a dual bounce sole with extreme heel, toe and trail edge relief. It has a small forward bounce surface and a massive back flange (trailing edge) to really reduce the bounce when open. It's the most aggressive low bounce option from Vokey.Ā

Ā

The L grind has that classic cresent/c-shaped that the M grind has but with less bounce overall. The L is a really great all around low bounce wedge. The back flange isn't as wide and its steeper in angle than the T grind which means it won't sit quite as flushĀ when the wedge is opened compared to the T.

Ā

I have not hit an L grind but the T is phenomenal for me around the greens.Ā  Im shallow in delivery and the highest bounce I play is 9.

Hitting high lofted wedges on soft turf is a nemesis shot for me. I'd recommend working on your technique.Ā

Ā

I tend to be shallow with my wedge shots (especially the 30-80 yarders) but with forward shaft lean. I have no issues spinning the ball. I can nip them well. However, even if you're shallow, if you come into the ball with shaft lean and exposing the leading edge at all in wet turf that sharp edge of a vokey/MG will immediately grab and dig. Almost have to use a technique that is a little more like a bunker shot where I specifically try to let the club head pass my hands at impact because this gets rid of the shaft lean and exposes more bounce.Ā

The T and V grind vokeys both have narrow forward bounce surfaces, so the leading edge doesn't come up much when laying the face open.Ā  But the forward bounce surfaces on those wedges have very high actual bounce angles (the V just being higher than the T), so when played square, they are more forgiving from soft surfaces that you would think, while still allowing you to get the leading edge under the ball from firm surfaces.Ā  Ā The L is kind of the opposite - a wide bounce surface, with low measured bounce.Ā  So it plays with very low bounce when square, and much higher bounce when opened.Ā  You basically have two types: the L, M, D (wide bounce surface that raises the leading edge when opened), and the T, V (narrow bounce surface that keeps the leading edge down when opened).Ā  Ā  I play a D sand wedge and a V lob wedge.Ā  Supposedly only 2 degrees difference in bounce, but they play completely differently.Ā  Ā

Ā

IMO, the V is the ultimate lob wedge.Ā  I don't understand why it isn't a "standard" grind.Ā Ā

To me, the V plays essentially just like the T, except with more forgiving turf interaction.Ā  I have both, set up identically, and I basically never play the T.Ā Ā The T is only better from really firm conditions, and is way more demanding forĀ softer lies and for anything approaching a full swing from the fairway.

Ā

Since they don't have a lefty V, you could get close by bending a 58T to 60 or 61.Ā

Since curiosity got the better of me, I reached out to wedgeworks on this matter of V grind.Ā  They do not make a lefty, but I was told that they could make a 58M into a V via the hand ground process.Ā  Just add that lingo into the notes and they would take care of it.Ā  Of course, that is $75 bucks added onto the $225 base.Ā  Really stinks being a lefty at times.Ā  Right now I have Opus 60/12 bent down to 57/9 and it works fine - but the allure of knowing this intrigues me.

I have done a bit of self diagnosis on my technique over the last few days after reading all the comments you have all kindly made. Discussed it with my brother who I play at least once a week with and he said he has noticed my right arm coming away from my body on short pitches.Ā
Ā

I have done a few drills that usually get me back on track and there is definitely a technique issue as well as my tempo getting a bit quick making me a bit hitty for want of a better expression at the ball.

Ā

Going to do a lot of work on the swing and might still explore the T grind as it has me really intrigued.Ā

I get that. When I first golfed I played righty too as there were no lefty sets to rent. I still to this day putt right handed.

In the bottom pic, the T is on the right left. As you can see, the grinds are really similar, with the V just having a bit more bounce.Ā

got the two mixed up. The visible difference in the bounce is almost imperceptible
