Saying that Scotty Scheffler is boring because he plays golf the way it is supposed to be played and is a great ball striker is just plain silly.  I guess that if the internet existed during the Hogan and Nicklaus eras, people would have complained they were boring too.  Unbelievable.

It’s not unbelievable as all I heard when I started playing golf was the “good golf was boring golf” and now more than ever it shown to be true.

It certainly doesn’t help that all the tv U.S. broadcasters have done since they started the job was over state certain golfers attributes specifically length.  Now that the best golfer in the world is just above average in length, all they can say is that he’s just overall better than everyone else in every other category which is hard to get people hyped up about.

People got spoiled with Tiger, Phil, and Rory among others that had a skill set that would visually set them apart for their peers.

Truth be told when Scottie gets the lead I just turn it off. That’s not a knock against Scottie, that’s just how great he has been  with the lead.

How can someone who hits so many great shots be boring? I watched him at Renaissance. His ball striking is a joy to behold.

Agreed, I do not understand that "Scottie is boring" takes at all. Because he doesn't hit it in the s*** all the time? He's working the ball around, playing bump and runs, showing awesome creativity in his short game overall. He is hitting ALL the shots, he just so happens to put pretty much all of them where they need to be.

Winning is never boring.  🏆

Sure it can be.

Are all wins the same? Is every win exciting? Every player exciting in the same way? Of course not.

Does Scottie bring the same racous cheers  when he wins as Tiger did? As Jack did when he won the Masters at 46 (who could previously be pretty boring to watch)?

Hell, even as Bryson is when he wins?

Scottie. Is. Boring.

He even wants to be. That's his thing. More power to him, as it's clearly working. He's finding balance it seems. Good for him.

But it's not exciting to watch.

There's obviously no "right or wrong" here. It's just opinions. It's like which ice cream flavor is boring and which isn't. but to me, the only reason I respond to these is because he's so very boring to watch to me.

You cannot believe that a person doesn't find methodical golf entertaining in comparison to some other ways that the game is played?  If you were to rate purely entertainment value of Scottie, Phil and Seve's games, you couldn't believe where someone may draw distinctions among them?

A better word for Scottie might be “dull”.

It looks like he intentionally tries to remain stoic during the round. It’s hard to argue with his results so far.

but for watchability his personality and style is definitely dull, boring, bland.

extremely vanilla

Hogan didn't have what would be called a lot of charisma when he was winning.  Nicklaus was very methodical in his taking apart golf courses, hardly seemed to bat an eye over his 2 iron into 17 at Pebble in '72 - watch some of his major rounds, leave '86 out of the mix.  Heck, watch the film of the '75 Masters - the famous Nicklaus moment on 12 was about the only personality showing though, except for his caddie, Miller wasn't all that demonstrative.  Some guys project some attitude (and some can back it up) but by and large most of the pros aren't doing much but going about their business on the PGAT, LPGA, DP World.

The tension of the moment and the competition and watching great golf under pressure is "it" for me.

To me, the "Scottie is boring" is just "I don't like Scottie", which is fine but then again, if he bores someone he bores them.

I agree, but the game is light years different from what it was when Hogan and Nicklaus were playing. It wasn't a global game; they didn't have social media, and they didn't even have the internet.  There is so much competition on tv with cable, apps, etc.. they have to entertain people to keep up viewership.

I don't fault Scotty for being who he needs to be to win.  But making comments on how boring it is to win tourneys isn't great for the brand.

He didn't say winning tournaments is boring.

Participation in golf has been up in record numbers, PGAT attendance up big this year, viewership is up - any available metric suggests the product is plenty good.  Social media really has little to do with how guys go about their game on the golf course (if they want to play winning championship golf).

I'm wondering where the "Is Xander Schauffle boring to watch?" thread is. Other than having a more interesting name, is Xander's golf any less boring than Scottie's? Scottie just won the same two majors in 2025 that Xander won in 2024, but I must have missed that thread. Both play similar styles of golf, hit the shot that's called for, stay away from big numbers, neither has a particularly extroverted personality or plays to the crowd or camera, minimal social media presence. I'm a big fan of them both.

It's not just my problem, it's the 30% of viewers who don't watch professional golf on TV anymore. It's entertainment, as Russell Crowe's gladiator understood. "Are you not entertained?" No. I wasn't. And I bet the ratings for Sunday were way down from the last 2 Opens. Scheffler compounds his lack of charisma by frankly stating he really doesn't care that much about winning golf tournaments. It doesn't define him. It defined Tiger, Jack, Arnie, Watson, Rory, Bryson. And that's why I watch those guys. And clearly I've got a lot of golf fans who feel just the way I do. It's fine though, really. The popularity of golf on TV just brought more people out to the golf course, created the 4.5 hour round and Mr. Scheffler has chased plenty of the millions Tiger and Rory brought out to the course to the pickleball courts or the couch, which is fine by me. Ignorant Golf Digest article too. Boring golf doesn't sell golf magazines. He's going to have to find a real job if that keeps up and that also might be very good for him and the other scribes. Thank you flamers for helping me to realize that I need to be rooting for a Scheffler grand slam. Then the courses will be empty like they were when I was a kid in the '70s and the 3 hour round will come 'round again. Keep it up, keyboard warriors!

Xander has never been #1 in the world.

if Xander is #1 for 148 weeks, he will get his own thread, don’t worry.

xander has a beautiful swing though. Maybe my favorite swing since prime tiger. And quite similar.
