Need More Spin on Driver

I’m swinging at 92-95 mph, slightly inside out, 4 degrees up on the ball and have historically generated spin in the 2000-2500 area.  But with a swing change, that number has gone down to as low as 1300.  Smash factor is still good at 1.45 on center strikes, but can’t for the life of me figure out why spin is so much lower.  

 

I’m going to go for a driver fitting, but can a shaft help address spin?  I’m also playing a Rogue 10.5 degree driver.  I’m ok with the idea of changing to a 12 degree head, but have read somewhere that smash factor will go down with more loft.  

 

But any other thoughts would be helpful….

What's the swing change? My guess is that you are now closing the face better through impact and the spin loft dropped a lot. How are you measuring the spin?

That's not a universal truth, for some that's true, for others, no. 

I’m hinging more on the backswing and trying to release the club.  The result has also been that my path is more square (used to be 3-5 degrees inside out and now it’s 0-2 degree inside out).  I have a GC Quad that I’m measure the data on, but my pro is seeing the same on a Trackman.

The low spin is coming from low club speed, combined with high AoA and low spin loft, which is related to the dynamic loft.  Based on what you've provided, your spin loft is probably <9 degrees. Your issue is that you're hitting too up on the ball with a low swing speed and low dynamic loft which must have come from the new ways your hands are working. Easiest first fix is to play the ball more back in the stance to get the AoA less positive, that might also help the dynamic loft. When you have higher swing speeds, you see gains in high AoA (if you can keep spin loft low) because the increased club speed creates the spin so you don't need help from AoA.

Wow, that makes a ton of sense.  Does the GC Quad measure spin loft?  

 

I have been trying to hit more up on the ball because with the new swing I was topping the ball (I usually tee the ball low). And you’re right, to do that I’ve been trying to tee it up forward in the stance.  Sometimes it works great.  But mostly the ball seems to dive out of the sky (I’m assuming b/c of lack of spin).  

 

Wondering if teeing it up lower again will help with spin loft.

Yes that could also help, I’d play around with both position and height and see what you can gain back in spin. GC quad (if you use the club stickers) gives you dynamic loft and AoA and then you can calculate spin loft. Spin loft = Dyn loft minus AoA.

It does, and just forget spin loft...

 

Low spin is due to impact above the centerline of the face. For each 1/8" lower you move impact position, spin will go up about 240 rpms. Try to move it down to the centerline, and a tad toe side (2 - 3/8") down, and 2 - 3/8" against the toe for more spin and a few mph higher ball speed.

Get some foot powder spray.   Face impact location is ALWAYS the first thing you need to look at when encountering any kind of spin problem (or smash problem) with the driver.   Nothing else can have as big an effect on spin than face impact.

 

The second thing to look at is dynamic loft (but only once impact location is good - and consistent).

All else equal it will - BUT - 1) everything else usually isn't equal and even if it is 2) the extra ball speed wont do you any good if the ball doesn't stay in the air.

If you start striking it better, getting spin under control AND launch is too low—you likely need different loft and/or a different head. 
 

swing changes can have a profound impact on your woods set up. Quality of strike determines smash. Also, GC4 usually gives a lower smash than Trackman.
