Srixon ZXi7 and ZXi5 Build with MMT 85 Regular

Recommended Posts

I searched quite a bit but wanted to post my exact question.  If there is a thread for this question already, please let me know.  Thank you.

Questions:

1) Are there issues with club construction with following components ("Issues" meaning adding a lot of weight on one end or the other, meaing some clubheads just weren't made to go with certain shafts).

2) What do these irons swingweight at using a 48g or 52g grips, no tip or butt weighting.

ZXi7s and ZXi5s between 5-PW

MMTs in 85 regular

Standard Winn Dri Tac at 48g  (I like these given my arthritis, etc.)

I assume the Zxi7s were designed to swingweight perfectly (no tip weights) with tour weight shafts.

I understand that MMTs have a lower balance point which helps with swingweighting on lighter shafts.  Should I build one iron with a 52g and another with 48g? and try?    I'm assuming the 52g may swingweight the club at D2 and a Winn 48g may make the iron swingweight heavier to D4?  I may like the heavier swingweighting, who knows.

Are there any really good graphite shafts that simply build well with the Srixon ZXi7 and ZXi5s?  SteelFiber i80CW Reg., for example?

I can try the Winn Dri Tax 2.0 that are at 51g, which will help with swingweighting.

Thank you for replies.

I have a ZX5 MkII 6 iron that I re-shafted with the MMT 85 at +3/4”, swing weights about D4 with a GP Tour Wrap midsize. They were quite a bit lighter with KBS R Tour Lites and S-Taper Lites at the same length.

I need to find out if Srixon used heavier heads in their over standard build. I am liking the MMT in the 6 iron and am considering the ZXI57-W. I did find a 70g Midsize fron Wedgeguys that I haven’t had a chance to swing yet. Steelfibers may require some tip weights to get the SW you are looking for…  If you like the MMT, give them a shot. Steelfibers are doing up in the retail markets, at Grips4less anyway.

Thank you for your insight.  Greatly appreciated.  By my understanding, adding 3/4" over standard length would increase the swingweight by approximately 4 points.  Therefore, I may expect the standard length MMT 85 to be around D0 with a 48-50g grip.  A very slight adjustment in tip weight to get to D2.

In summary, it sounds like there are no dramatic clubmaking adjustments needed when building with the 85 MMTs, S or R with only a slight weight difference between the two.

I will try the MMTs.  My only experience using the subject models are with them built with Steel Fiber i80CW.  Both are good shafts so it's a matter of personal preference of the feel they provide.

Very much appreciate thoughts/experiences from others.

I did speak with Dunlop today to verify lighter heads in my original build. I was told that anything over 1/2” they default to lighter heads to maintain normal swing weights, unless otherwise directed. Good luck with your build! 🏌🏻

Did you mean that the overall weight of the club was ligher with KBS R Tour 95 or S-Taper Lites OR did you mean swingweight was quite a bit lighter.  Thanks.

The balance point of the MMT 85 shaft is lower resulting in higher swingweight even though I have lighter heads.
(KBS Tour Lites and S Taper Lites are both 95 g shafts so static weight was higher/swingweight lower).

With your standard length shafts and standard heads your swingweight may be higher than normal. Recommend call Dunlop Sports - 1-800-999-6263.  They list C9 as swingweight for graphite shafts, ask about the MMTs…

Thanks for mentioning what Srixon lists as I was able to find the chart with the information.  I will inquire about MMT.  C9 may refer to some other graphite option.

Many thanks.

As others said before, the MMT shafts are having a Metal mash in the tip section to alter the swing weight because ususal the swing weight drops when coming from a +100g iron shaft.  And for my personal feeling, especially when the overall weight of the irons goes down because of lighter shafts, it feels nice when the swing weight balance stays at D2 or above.

I've accepted several independent fittings and will decide between KBS TGI60 and Mitsubishi MMT 65R.  85R MMT produced results worthy of purchase, except it was alot easier (and fun) to hit with the 65R....  Reminded me of how I used to swing a golf club 15 years ago.

The TGI60 with the ZXi5 clubhead has a swingweight of C9 (clubhead afixed to shaft using the screw-in apparatus) C9 matches the Srixon swing weight chart on their website.  I'm fine with the C9 as I hit this set up well.

MMT 65R was only available on a TM790.  The swingweight was D1  My overall results were much better with the 85MMT on ZXi5, so I attribute the difference to the clubhead.

The MMT 85R with ZXi5 clubhead has a swingweight of D5.  Yes, my results were fine, but the configuration was noticeably heavy and not much fun to hit with.

The fitter felt that the organic swingweight MMT 65R on ZXi5 would be same as MMT 85R (D5).  Purely speculation, but logicial.

I understand the balance point on MMTs to be lower towards the tip, but how does an 85g or even 65g shaft produce an organic D5 swingweight?  The TGI60 on the ZXi5 is C9 using the detachable aparatus.

I thought lighter shaft would lead to a lighter swingweight?

** grips were Lamkin 50g.  "Organic" is my own definition of a swingweight achieved without tip weights and using only using the attachment mechanism.

My understanding is in order to reduce swingweight by 1 point, add 5g in grip.  May also shorten shaft length 1/2" to reduce by 3 points.  Does this mean that Srixon ZXi5 and MMTs are not a good combination to build with?

Thoughts, anyone?

I wish to extend much appreciation to Srixon, Mitsubishi, and KBS for providing the information I needed to make a very informed decision.  It certainly helps to be an educated consumer to be able to ask the right questions.  Many topics on this forum helped me quickly get up to speed.  It took time to mine through the topics.

Kind regards.
