Going from draw to fade, which shaft?

Recommended Posts

So I am making a switch to hitting primarily a fade off the tee so that I have a little more control. I have a few different shafts on hand that I could try, but wanted to get the experts take on it since I don't really wanna spend more money on shafts at this time.

Head
G440 LST 9*

Shaft Options (I own these currently) - all are 45.25"
2024 Ventus Blue 6X
Ventus Blue TR 6X
Diamana GT 6X

The big concern is keeping dynamic loft down -- generally when I am hitting cuts well, the dynamic loft is around 16-17*, so spin stays a little higher (2700ish). Club head speed is 113-115, ball speed generally 162-166.

What are y'alls thoughts?

A change we seldom see... Most people that draw the ball, are the ones looking to switch to a fade for greater ball control, which makes sense.

I hit the ball straight, 250+, but was able to make TR Blue work for a few years, but my tempo/mechanics often fought the shaft profile...great shaft, though.  I played Fuel Tour Spec 60S for many years before switching to Ventus TR Blue 5-6S before the impulsive switch to Diamana GT stiff.

Diamana GT shaft profile is very different from TR Blue; has a stiffer handle and mid but a slightly softer tip, which fits my fast tempo/hitter style better.  It's an aim and pull the trigger, hit it straight setup.

Unfortunately, Mitsubishi doesn't publish shaft profiles comparable to unique Fujikura.  TR Blue has a stiffer handle, than 2024 V.Blue which has a softer tip due to fractionally more torque, so best guess, 2024 Ventus Blue 6x to turn it over.

For me personally, the Diamana GT is the straightest outta the three you listed therefore it's in my 3 metal.  In fact, I can hit a draw or fade on command with it whereas before, I couldn't.  TR and Velo+ blue are really easy to turnover.  You also have to consider EI profile.  GT has a softer tip and mid and gets really stiff in the handle.  TR and Velo+ blue are both very tip stiff.  Velo+ blue gradually loses stiffness as you get down to the handle where as TR loses stiffness starting from the mid but stays rather linear to the handle.  However, shafts are all about feel so your results may differ.

Having played both TR Blue and 2024 ventus plus blue and also moving to a fade off the tee for more control, I found the TR Blue better for my 100 mph semi aggressive swing.

I found 2024 ventus blue plus to be too tip soft and more prone to seeing a draw.

to add, ventus black imo was anti-left but a beast of a shaft.

A fade is made with a face angle open to path = higher dynamic loft all else equal.

Spin is a product of dynamic loft, the correction force is vertical gear effects, who either add or cut off spin.

If you feel the need to change prefered ball flight, look into my DIY driver tune up, and make sure the club and shaft itself is a good fit (especially play lenght). Thats needed to dial in a average impact pattern that dont add unwanted spin.

By the book, a shaft that deliver less dynamic loft, also deliver less face closure rate, but in the hands of a player, it might be the opposite due to how feedback of feel, alter the way you load and realease the club.

Meaning if it removes too much feedback during load, you will both load and release it harder, and might end up with a bad hook, instead of the wanted fade.

Thats why using a shaft to change ball flight is "risky", we have to test it. I would rather advocate a shaft that feels good and work for the swing you got, and use face angle (open in adr position), and last, use static loft to get launch and spin where you like it to be, and in that order.

My miss is a big hook, left of left, and I have used all of the “anti-left” shafts my entire golfing life- Aldila Alpha, Matrix Black Tie, every iteration HZRDUS Black ever made, and currently using AD VF. But if I come down hard from too much inside with a full release, or if my arms outrun my body, I can hook the p!ss out of all of them.

Correcting path to face angle is the real answer, but I have found that using a shaft that is tip stiff, firmer, and heavier can mitigate the lefts, and even promote the right. Of the three shaft options that you have given, the Diamana is the winner, simply because the other two are very easy to get hooky.

The shaft has nothing to do with it unless your profile is WAY off. I have no less than 15 drivers with that many shafts and they can all be worked both ways.

Going stiffer will generally help you fade it. Less likely to overcook it, typically lower spin/flight.  Can you go up a flex?

Alternative option, have you tried to go up in weight on current shaft just to slow down a bit and gain control through weight? Can add some lead tape on shaft for static weight increase. I have a little under the grip of one of my hybrids that is the "don't go left" option between long iron and longer hybrid.
