Pulling Ping graphite iron shafts

I was discussing this issue on another thread, but I think it deserves its own thread.

There is a lot of information out there about people having difficulties pulling steel shafts from Ping irons because they are installed at the factory with a pressure/interference fit. I experienced this myself when pulling a steel shaft from a G25 iron. You have to heat the hosel until you hear a pop and then twist until the shaft breaks free.

Well, this is all fine and good for a steel shaft, but obviously excessive heat and twisting won’t work with a graphite shaft.

I’m wondering whether anyone out there has pulled a graphite shaft from a recent Ping iron and whether you had any of the issues that people have run into when pulling a steel shaft from a Ping iron. I just can’t imagine that Ping wedges graphite shafts into iron heads with a pressure/interference fit like it does with steel shafts.

I don't have a lot of experience pulling Ping shafts, on my current set (i230's) I replaced the steel shafts with graphite and thought the steel shafts came out relatively easy. The graphite shafts I installed were .370 parallel tips and required minimal sanding to get a snug fit. Seem to read a lot of comments here about Ping iron hosels having a loose fit, they do use collared ferrules to help center the shafts. Obviously you would want to use a shaft puller for graphite shafts but I wouldn't expect any difficulties.

There is no interference fit with their graphite shafts as it is not possible to do. You pull a graphite shaft out of a Ping iron the same as any other iron. I will say that for current Ping irons you better have the correct Ping ferrule on hand or better than average skills (shims or whatever) to accommodate the sloppy fit of the new irons. To coin a phrase, "it's like throwing a hot dog down a hallway!"

Thanks for this. I have generic 355 collared ferrules. Is there something different about a Ping ferrule? Will these generic ones not work?

I recently reshafted a set of Ping 410s. They had graphite shafts. Came out very easy with a shaft puller. I reshafted with a different flex graphite shaft and I used these ferrules I got from golfworks.

These are the proper ferrules. The ferrules linked above are too small to match the hosel diameter (.545 diameter vs .520)

Ping graphites into the old style interference fit hosel are still interference fit. The grip is much less, though, compared to a steel shaft into those hosels. Maybe Ping shaves down the tip a little, or maybe the graphite crushes down over time. Anyway, I doubt you will have much trouble pulling the shafts.

I pulled a tip adapter from a g30 driver shaft this morning. No issues. Granted, driver tips are different than iron pulls.

Just a quick update. No issues pulling an Alta CB graphite shaft from a g400 iron head. Very little heat and came off very smoothly.

Anything newer than G400's require a special ferrule. Otherwise you will have to make some sort of shim to fill the space.
