i230 Short Irons

One other thing that I forgot to say. When I went from i20s to i230s, I called Ping to ask if my same shafts would play the same length because I wanted to swap them. They said we can’t say for sure, but probably. I never noticed until I measured yesterday, but my i230s were 37.5” in the 7 iron, which is 0.75” longer than the standard i230 7 iron after measuring them at a store. That might have played a factor too since I’ve always used a 37” 7 iron 1-2* upright.

Welp took the i230s out today and played local par 3 course. 96 degrees out and place to myself. Played 2 balls with my 243s and 2 balls with i230s. I230s won all but one hole that was pretty much a push. I really love my 243s and kinda bummed out that they need to get kicked out of the bag but it’s not even close. I230s so consistent and forgiving in comparison. So much tighter dispersion both L-R and N-S.

Power spec lofts didn’t help me nine and P were really short about one club less than any irons I had before the 230s, like the Apex TCB‘s and t100 irons.

I’m thinking it’s gotta be so player dependent. They are proving to be a shade longer than my 243s albeit 1 degree stronger lofted (play 243s 2* weak)

If you have some speed, the extra grooves on those irons make them super spinny. Our regional Ping equipment rep told me that’s why there wasn’t a lot of tour players moving into this iron from the i210 despite lots of amateurs loving them for the bit of extra spin! 
 

From what I remember, they spun about 800-900 rpm more on the short irons for me when I tried them on the simulator. Instead of a 9 iron being 8900-9100 rpm, it was getting close to 10K.

Had my first round with the i210s. Loved the short and mid irons. Very accurate and the right amount of spin. But the i230 long irons are the best. Straight, high, and far. I could do a split set with them.

I went on Trackman with the same PX 6.0 shafts in an i230 9 iron and i210 9 iron. My averages were:

 

i230 9 iron

-8500 spin

-56* landing angle

-105 feet high

-125 yards carry

-28* launch angle

-36* dynamic loft

-102 mph ball speed

-85 mph club head speed

 

i210 9 iron

-7800 spin

-54* landing angle

-103 feet high

-135 yards carry

-26* launch angle

-34* dynamic loft

-103 mph ball speed

-86 mph club head speed

 

These numbers match my on-course experience. More spin and height and launch with the i230s, but less distance.

Your 9 iron swing speed is close to the PGA Tour average so both clubs seem low in distance. According to trackman the PGA Tour average for a 9 iron is an 85 mph swing speed, with 8647 spin, and a 148 yard carry.

I was at an indoor range with mats I don’t really like which might have contributed to that

I am loving the spin on the i230s. Ball comes in high and holds firm greens. Standard spec 4 - PW. 👌

You may have mentioned this previously...  have you checked the actual lofts of the clubs?

Yes, had them checked and bent to standard if they were off
