Is there anything you'd purposely do to irritate other golfers?

Recommended Posts

Had an older gentleman in league years ago who was pretty gregarious and a prankster - great guy but some stuff would cross the line occasionally though I never saw anyone get upset.  Having been the victim of this or that from time to time and maybe having had a bit of my fill of it, I decided one afternoon to toss my dog trainer starter's pistol in my bag and at an opportune moment, as he was using his double sided chipper, lol, pulled the trigger from about 40 yards away.  There was a moment . . . but his partner was laughing so hard and reminded him he dished out plenty and should take a little and all good but I did notice for the future we still had a ton of fun playing when we got matched up but the hijinks during backswings and so forth disappeared.

That's about it for me and was more of an entertainment thing as suggested.

If it was about being competitive and mind games - never been something I would do.

I’m sure I have done something, but never on purpose. We have guys in our group that never shut up, and that bugs the heck out of me. One guy in particular will stand close behind me, and his normal voice can be heard hundreds of yards away. I’m always in a better mood on days he doesn’t play.

I play with a guy (cannot break 100) who grunts like a frog anytime someone has a critical bird or par putt. Done it to me several times, done it to a plus a guy & others too. i pretty much expect it now & have faked him out on the timing.

And why do you play with Frog Grunter?

Not unless they start it.  🙂

I did play a few events years ago with a guy that would do a lot of weird stuff.  He'd hit drives off a novelty 8 inch long tee, for example. I don't know if he was trying to distract or just a weirdo.  Nice guy actually but very odd.

And even more years ago, we'd often get paired with a volatile guy who duffed chips frequently then would explode. It got so aggravating (yet entertaining) we took to subtly triggering him. This was back in my youth. Or 20s anyway. And it was just normal play not tournaments.

Some guys have a hard time with this:

Play well. And without delay. Get the honor. Be of good cheer and relentless. Long and down the middle.

If you are considering gamesmanship tactics, please don’t. Do everyone a favor and find another pastime/enthusiasm.

Bingo. I used to play against a couple guys that couldn’t shut up until… I was up 4 holes.

I’d let them do all the talking until I closed them out around 6&5. Then I’d enjoy some friendly banter.

lemme guess, he also hits his ball into the water, then jet away in his cart while you guys tee up, then when you got there he'll say "my ball bounced out of the water!"

and he'll also take a 5ft putt gimme and he happens to be the champion of the club?

Watching some videos of the new Odyssey Chipper, it's the kind of thing I'd almost buy just to use in a Member-Guest to piss off the other teams.

No. But why would you do that or even ask? Good grief some people here. <shaking head>

It's even better than that. Mulligans everywhere, all the time too.He has creative math, can hit the ball 9 times and calls it a 6. We razz him but he's unrepentant. Good thing he's a guy i've known for 45 years, some things are thicker than golf honor.

I'm jovial.  I try to be.  Golf is supposed to be fun.  Had one guy step over the line and be a jerk. Takes a lot to get me non jovial but I can go from jovial to not jovial if you cross that line.  You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.  I don't play with that guy anymore.  I have a little anger management issue I keep in check, but don't press your luck.

Golf is hard enough.  If I'm playing with you I want you to play your best and shoot a great score.

This, 100%.

I have been known to do one thing though. If I’m paired with speedy Gonzalez, there’s no where for us to go, and he’s getting mouthy about pace of play, I’ll slow myself down. Slow my walk, and just generally take my time.

Why?

Playing well at a pace slower than you want to in an event is a skill players should have. I’d rather be moving steadily slowly than hurry up and wait on repeat. Playing up the back side of the group in front, when they are up on the group in front of them….not helpful.

Complaining about pace is the only thing worse than the pace. Nowhere for us to go man, complaining won’t make it better.

I won’t be rushed in anything I do in life.

What about a short 9 hole course that will take 4 hours to complete because of the people infront of you?

IDK? I’ve played many many rounds that start out slow and then take off. Could be the course layout or just a couple brain dead dudes that wake up after a few holes. It only takes one or two guys to back everything up.

Regardless, when it’s your turn, be ready to hit and do so. When you’re done, move along. There’s no rushing involved. And there’s nothing more annoying than having someone complete a hole only to linger when they should be walking. You may think you’re only giving Speedy the what for but you’re also affecting everyone behind you.

Purposely?  Only when I play with my three brothers. See my avatar. OTOH,  Lee Trevino is my golf idol and I'm conversational  and kid around a lot. When me and my golf buddy Syl get paired with unknowns they usually say at the end of the round that it was fun playing with me. I asked Syl "On a scale of 1-10 how annoying am I to play with" And he said a 7.  I asked why he called me every week he said "Because your so fun to play with"

So never to purposely irritate.

I have a friend that is a really good player. He plays off +2 on most of the courses we play. He always hits everything terrible. Completely misfits everything (according to him) except his short wedges and his chipping. He HATES anyone saying “nice shot” to him on any shot that doesn’t go in the hole.

Naturally, we try to remind him on many shots throughout the round how good some shots of his were that didn’t hole out.

Match play is a different game with different rules. Most matches can be won through strategy and head games. Making your opponents think of other stuff, instead of their own games, is almost always a recipe for success.

I f’ing hate it when I misshot and they said nice shot. Sure it’s a compliment and they don’t know better but I know I didn’t strike it well, I just happen to have very good misses.
