9 wood curiosity

I threw a Cobra DS-Adapt 9 wood in my bag as I struggled with a par 3 on my home course that is typically right around 185-200 yards with a heavily sloped front to back green.  If it's closer to 180ish I choke down an inch, otherwise at closer to 200 yards I grip it normally.  I get INSANE height and my ball is usually IN my divot or within 6 inches.  Fantastic club for a long par 3 or a 200 yard approach on a par 5 🙂

First time trying the 9 wood today. Only hit it twice but loving it so far, it’s like a wedge.

I ordered the sub70 9w a couple days ago, with the 4th of July savings it was a great deal. Specially compared to what the big OEM's are charging for a wood these days. Once it arrives I'll take it out to the range with the 5H and see how they compare. Mainly looking at how high it launches and how far left it does NOT go.

Yeah, I hit mine last Friday.  Crazy easy to swing.  Might be an issue into the wind, but much easier than the old 4-iron.

Into a strong wind it can definitely balloon. I put mine a little further back if I’m into the wind and that helps.

For wind: just like anything else, club up.
I got a 7 wood and 5 wood if I’m into wind.

I have been thinking of using a 9w but I live in a windy state (Nebraska) and I decided on usung a 5 hybrid instead, mainly because I can deal with the wind better than the 9 wood.  On a calm day, no wind, I can hit the 9 wood about 6-8 yds further than the hybrid, but not on a windy day.

I started using a 9w this year and love it.  I’m a 4 index, 110-115 driver swing speed, and the 9w for me is so much better from the rough than my 4 iron was.  I go from a 27 degree 5 iron to 24 degree G430 9w with RDX Red X flex shaft.  With no wind it’s about a 210 carry.  Nice thing vs a 4 iron is that it lands at such a steep angle the total distance is close to the carry distance.  I was getting too much roll with the 4 iron.  I’d say if you use your 4 iron off the tee a lot and want rollout then 9w might not be a great replacement, but if you’re like me and want it for approach shots into the green it’s a better option.  My opinion but that’s been my experience so far this season.

Curious how you gap your top of bag? What other woods do you play and how far do you carry them? I’m interested in changing my 4h out for a 9w, but will need to get on a monitor and regap

Another one who went from 3 wood, 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid to G440 4 wood, 7 wood and 9 wood then ZXi5 6 iron. I am extremely happy with the change. The 440s play long and the 9 wood is in between a 4 and 5 hybrid for me but the distance gap between it and my 6 iron is not enough to slot a hybrid in. So I just hit softer to make it go 5 hybrid distance and harder to make it go 4 hybrid distance. 9 wood goes high with hardly any roll and is super easy to hit.

Added a 60 degree wedge to fill up the empty slot.

Similar here. I have less speed than I used to, so I’ve gone:

D, 5w, 7w G425 Max

9w G430

6h G440

7i - 56* G440

With 13 clubs I have no gaps, and I can’t say I ever face a shot where I wish I had a 60*, so I’m good with this setup for a good while.

Ping. Play Your Best.

I went with the 959X which I guess is the newest model? It finally arrives tomorrow, which has taken quite a while to get here. My first rodeo with the Sub70 brand so hope it goes well. I'm eyeing those sick wedges next

I put a 9w in the bag this year and it is money.  My favorite club right now.  It is a 24* TM M6.  I hit it about 215-220 off the deck and probably 225-230 off the tee.  It is a great club.  Tons of height and lands soft.  I have a Diamana Thump F85 in it playing at 40.5 inches.

Nice. Always curious how others follow the 9W. Next club for you? Hybrid or straight into irons?

G430 Hybrid for me.  5 Hybrid turned up to 27.5 degrees or the 6 hybrid turned down to 28.5.  I am testing both right now trying to figure out which fits my swing and gap better between 9W and 6 iron.

I have a 3/5/7/9 wood but can only use three of them to stay at 14 clubs.  I interchange 7w and 5w generally.  9w is very lie and wind sensitive because of the high ball flight.  I consider it my 4 iron replacement so it’s always in the bag.  3w is also a tee shot alternative so that’s also always in the bag.  Between 3w and 9w is where I’ll mix it up

Same. Think the 6h can almost gap well with the 9w but other days feel I need the 5H. Also testing keeping the 5H at 26* then 9w at 23* 7w at 20* and 4w at 17*

I got to get on a launch monitor and do a gapping session.  When I hit each hybrid at the driving range, they look like they go almost the same distance.  I got to get some club data to see what spin is like and face angle.  I will probably go with the 6h turned down to 28.5.  I got 9w 24, 5w 19.5, and then 3w 16.5.  I have been thinking about going 15 in my 3W to give me 4.5 degree gapping at the top of my bag.
