Soft Step w/ Axiom Wedges

Someone help me soft step my wedges 🙏🏽 I have 3 SP Axiom 125X shafts for my 50,55,60 wedges. My current thought process is one of two options but I’m open to suggestions as maybe I’m not thinking through this correctly!

 

Option 1: 

50* - .5” Tip Trim - 35.5” Length

55* - .25” Tip Trim - 35.25” Length

60* - 0 Tip Trim - 35.25” Length

 

Option 2: 

50* - .5” Tip Trim - 35.5” Length

55* - 0 Tip Trim - 35.25” Length

60* - 0 Tip Trim - 35.25” Length

 

Where my builders and gurus at?! Help a fellow golf nerd out!

it all comes down to the head weights. are those heads having a weight progression or ar they same in weight? 

what hosel size is the head? be careful with sanding AXIOMS, there are some WRX members that had broken AXIOM tips in the past. 

 

SP AXIOM was made for P / 9 / 8 iron? 

what is a classic weight for a PW head? 295g something? 

the wedge heads are probably 300g? check this first

if so, assambling a wedge head into the PW tip setting it will soft stepped 1x, 9i setting 2x and 8i setting 3x 

wedge with 8iron shaft in the next stiffer version is a trick that some players do and like

 

I did Soft Step 2x AXIOM in my 6i and 5i and it came down very nice, so why not doing it with wedges as well for sure.

Have you had a chance to actually test that shaft in any wedge to see how the default tipping feels?

 

Have you ever had a problem in the past with stiffness feel in the wedges causing problems?   

 

To be honest, for most am's it's just not really very important.  With the shorter playing length and slower swing speeds, they just can't feel the difference in 1/2" tipping in the wedges - much less 0.25" of tipping.  You might be overthinking things a bit.   

 

IF it is important (it certainly can be for some) - which means the only useful answers have to come from you doing some actual testing to determine how they feel and how much adjustment might be needed based on that feel.  No one here will be able to answer that for you.   

 

IF not, it's really just a random decision that just doesn't matter one way or the other.

Hey this is super helpful thank you! They are Mizuno T-1 wedges and unfortunately the website does not disclose the approx head weight on there but I’m going to try and figure that out for you. Ya my thought was if I do 9i setting for the 50* and then 8i setting for the 55 and 60* it will come out feeling pretty similar as the 55 and 60* are 1/4” shorter in length.

The Mizunos have tapered tip hosels for sure. 0.355 

why not 8iron Setting for the 50 and 9 Iron Setting for the other 2 wedges? This would make more sense to me. But it is depending on the head weights as well. Are they the same, or is the 50deg head lighter than the 55/60

So you’re saying add more flex to the 50*. I figured since that is still a full swing club that you would want it to more closely match the stiffness in a PW. Then the 55 and 60* with a little more flex as they are hardly ever full swing and require a little more touch and feel.

Maybe I did miss undestand your innitial post. 
the 50 deg Wedge is a full swing club for the most of us. So yes, this one should match the PW in feel and swing weight as close as possible. 
 

i thought you want to have a flex and weight progression that stays the same in all 3 wedges.

No you’re right I should have been more specific! I think I probably want a similar feel to the PW in the 50* but I definitely want more of a “stiff” feel in the 55 and 60*

Probably 1/20 pros can pick out a 1/4" tip trim lol. I say build your 60 first, few range sessions, few course sessions and you'll know if you should keep the 55 stock or tip it 1/2".
