Titleist DCI 962B modern replacement

One of the all time best irons, hard to find a set in good enough shape to play. Wondering what people think would be a modern replacement?

Srixon Zxi 7 or Z Forged 2. The 962s and the B's had a unique sole grind. Srixon is the closest I have found for turf interaction.

I had 962’s in high school in the 90’s. The 962B’s were straight 🔥.

I would say the new Mizuno Pro S3 is the closest. Very similar cavity and blade profile.

Fourteen TC 888 and current ZXi7 are my recommendations from a long-time 962b player that currently uses ZXi7.

I guess technically, the most similar would have to be the LB (Larry Bobka) stuff from 2nd Swing. He designed the originals and has released clubs out of same 431 stainless steel, just haven’t hit them (yet 😀) to be able to truly compare 🤷‍♂️

Played the best golf of my life with those in high school in the late 90s.  I keep wanting to put them back in the bag, but with the adjustment for lofts, that puts the 4 iron back in play and I don’t have the game for that butter knife anymore!  
 

I’ll never sell mine - paintfill removed and they have the scotchbrite treatment for the brushed look.

I had a set of DCI 990s from that era.  Cast SS if I remember like the 962b just bigger.

 

They held up VERY well, kept them for 10+ years.

 

You might be able to hunt around for decent set of 962s.  Could probably send them off for refurb.

Been following his stuff on Instagram. He mentioned in a comment on one of the posts that they would be available as heads only, and he's trying to get them as close to $1000 as he can.

If I was an OEM, I would be releasing small limited runs of these classic sets for a nice upcharge…no shortage in nostalgia here. Just bust out the old cast…maybe one a year.

Good chance they are destroyed, esp if they're made in Asia.  Need to protect your IP.

Giving me the sweats. I accidentally bought a set of Bs way back when, and was stuck playing them for a whole competitive season. I was not good enough for these at all. Who knows how many strokes I gave up to misfits and shattered confidence.

Had the 990b's, loved those things. Not as storied as the 962b, but everybit as demanding. It's essentially the design for the modern muscle cavity - ie a muscleback pad with a CB surrounding it.

 

But yah, my game can't handle those now. 😉
