Cutting down driver shafts to use in a 3 wood

I purchased new Project X Denali shafts for my driver, 3 wood and 5 wood.  According to my research, I am supposed to cut off 1/2” on the tip and 1/2” at the butt to get a correct 3 wood length.  They all came in 45” long with a Ping adapter.  Do I have to remove the adapters and cut 1/2” off the tips, or am I okay just cutting off at the butt end.  I just ordered a G430 5 wood too.  Same thing, I think it’s 1/2” off the tip and one off the butt end.

Denali shafts are spec'ed to be straight in for Driver, Tip trim 0.5" for 3 wood and tip trim 1" for 5 wood.  To make a long story short you tip trim the shafts this way to account for the additional weight from a driver head to 3 wood to 5 wood each increasing in weight respectively.  once you tip trim then install the adaptor you can then install the tip and shaft into the head and from there butt trim the shaft to your desired playing length.

Impossible to say for sure as it depends on how sensitive you are to shaft stiffness changes and how good a fit the original stiffness profile might be...

BUT - most am's will likely be fine not bothering to tip trim for the 3 wood and maybe even the 5 wood too.   The first 1/2" of tipping is rarely noticeable for most am's.  1" of tipping (for the 5wd) is generally noticeable but not necessarily that significant of a difference for many.

 

In any case, you can always start by not tip trimming, butt trim to leave the playing length a bit long (1/2" long for the 3wd and 1" long for the 5wd), then go test the shafts in the heads choking up to the desired playing length.  If it feels fine, then you're good to go.  If it feels a bit soft, then you can make the effort to pull the adapter and tip trim.

 

PS.  Always butt cut based on an actual measurement of the installed shaft with a club ruler (or DIY version of a club ruler).  Never butt cut to length based on "research."
