Steel weights for car rims instead of lead tape?

avrag

Recommended Posts

Title says it all.

Has anybody tried the adhesive steel weights for car rims instead of leadtape, especially on driver heads? They are usually 5 grams each and pretty small, so you can place them strategically.
But the adhesive is made to stick to aluminium or steel, so I wonder, whether it would work on carbon as well.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I don't see the point when lead tape is cheap and works. What happens if/when you want to remove the steel weights from the carbon driver head?

a) it's lead, which is poisonous, as opposed to steel.

b) they are small, so you can put 5 grams at a very specific point on the head.
And they are also adhesive, so I guess you can remove them as well. But this was exactly why I asked, if anyone had expereince with using them.

If the reason you're considering this is to avoid lead tape then there are other alternatives that are made for golf clubs, such as this Rubber Tungsten Swingweight Tape-GW0054 - The GolfWorks

Maybe you'll hear from other people who tried wheel weights but I would be concerned about the adhesive used for them. They're obviously made to withstand a lot more abuse than golf club adhesive weights and could damage the driver if you need to remove them. But maybe not.

I gave this a thought, but I have read quite a few comments here, which claimed that the tungsten tape didn't stick properly to carbon driver heads.

I'm sure you've explored this as well, but does your driver have adjustable weight ports? I'm guessing they aren't in a position you prefer to add weight?

Trouble is that it is a Mizuno driver from the 230 series and I have informed myself here. Many people with more experience with club tinkering than myself have written that the weight is not only screwed in, but also glued in somehow and that it is a real PITA to get it out. Besides, I need to add at least 10 grams after the ordering of a shaft for it went horribly wrong. So basically I have to get it from a swing weight of about C3 or C4 to something, which has at least a chance to work.

Don’t think I’d want a chunky tire weight on my driver head but whatever floats your boat.  They’re about an 1/8 or more tall… which depending where you put them can get grabbed real easily by a tee or ground if you drop kick one.

I pack tungsten or lead tape under weights or do some math and buy heavier head weights if I need more than a few grams.

Typically these weights are set with a little loctite which is pretty easy to break the bond with a little heat but yeah I can see it being difficult to find the right weight on that head anyway.

One other idea, you could use lead tape but then add a layer of HVAC aluminum tape over to 'encase' it. You could use gloves to do the initial work.

Might be hard to imagine for you, but there's a bunch of protected species of animals, which live on my home course. And I care about these things.

Don’t let them suck on your driver and you’ll preserve all the life on the course.

I use tungsten tape and have had zero issues on about 5 carbon headed drivers I’ve used it to “fit” friends with.   Clean the head with acetone before you stick the tape on.

Is eating wheel balancing weights better for them? If you are so concerned about their wellbeing, you should weld on additional mass so there's damage to the environment. Or just use lead tape like everyone else.

Been around golf courses for 40 years.  Never really saw lead tape flying off of clubs or discarded on the course.  Really a non-issue.

You got to be kidding... LOL There's no comparison.  Five "5" grams is a lot of weight.  I could be wrong, but 1/2" of lead tape is 2 grams.  I have 1/2" strip and 1/4' strip on top, from center face towards back of driver, and 2 grams is 1 SW, I believe.  I thought my driver was D3.5 but told it's now D4.

Wheel weights would not be as unnoticeable as lead tape.  I tee the ball relatively low, so driver sole flies slightly over turf at impact.

People who are clueless about the concept of abrasion of tiny particles can't be helped.
And yes, since my golf course does not use any harmful substances like weed killers, the golf course itself is home to a ton of endangered species.

Anything more I could reply would be against forum rules.

How many inches short did you build the driver? Or are you playing an exceptionally heavy grip or tons of build up tape. C4 doesn’t seem possible without those things.

I appreciate your concern.  Do you drive a combustible engine vehicle to the course?

clubs, grips, shoes, balls.  All those thing degrade with “tiny particles” well.

use whatever you want, man

(you could use lead tape in an indoor super secure facility to test out how much weight you want added and where, and then take it to a builder and have them add the weight inside the head via hotmelt.  So environmentally friendly)

Not what you're asking, but in the past I've used beading for leaded windows, a sort of super duper, thick, D-profiled lead tape, on a couple of iron sets when I've wanted to add more weight than was easy to do with regular tape alone.

Edit: Just read through the thread, and it's still lead, so not really much use from an environmental perspective. As others have said though, I've never lost a chunk of tape off a club. Some of the stuff on my old Mizunos from my junior days is now essentially at one with the clubhead. A tactical nuclear strike's not shifting it.

Heavy metals in hydraulic fluid and lubricants that leak from mowers regularly are a negligible amount.  Any lead tape residue is even far less.

You're overthinking this without the benefit of understanding how a statistical analysis of pollutants/contaminants works.

I don't see a problem with using them. Weight is weight. But to your point #1 -- how often are you touching it with your hands? Usually it's on the back or sole of the club where you might only get incidental skin contact.
