Ping G440 4H is my longest off-the-deck club. I don't practice and fairway woods have just too much risk over the season. I love it. My friends fear it.

Not to sound like an old man,  but I put a 3 & 4 hybrid in the bag back when I was a little older than you (I'm 47 now) and never looked back.

Added a 5 hybrid a couple years after that and it's been in the bag about 15 years. I carry a 7H now too because they're just fun to hit.

Play what works and what makes it fun. The scorecard doesn't care.

Just dropped a 4i and replaced it with a 5 hyb this season and it’s been an incredible change for me.  Never have been a hybrid fan, historically loved long irons.  Just decided to put the ego aside and force myself to learn to play a hybrid effectively and it has made that part of the bag so much easier.

What was your 4i loft? What 5h model did you go with? What shaft in the 5h?

It was a zxi5 4i at 22*.  Tsr2 5hyb turned down 1* in D2 setting.  Motore speeder ts hb 9.8 - old school shaft I can’t get away from.

Biggest difference is ball speed across the face.  It’s so much easier to get the same ball speed I had work harder for with the iron.  My misses are so much better.

Its still a bit of an adjustment period from a looks standpoint, but it’s made a difference with my confidence and has given more versatility, especially out of the rough.

Did you match the carry number you were trying to get with the 5h?

Added 5 yards, more launch and peak height.  All of which I was looking for, but mainly just ease of use.

Something to note, I’m starting to find it much easier to take some speed off and still keep some height.  4i was too much of a one way street for me.

Yeah, my 4h is way more playable than thr 4i. So I can see what you're saying with the 5h.

Did you demo the tsr2 and 3 and decide on the 2 or did you just go straight into the 2? Im thinking of going into the tsr3 to help keep it from getting spinny

I went straight to the 2 because I much prefer that shape.  Just fits my eye.

The 4hyb would have gone too far for my gaps.

Got it.

The 5 hyb turned  down is a perfect in-between yardage for me.  Pretty easy 212 - 215 carry without really trying to hit it hard.  Kind of shocked me honestly.

Zxi5 5i is 195-205 so it fits great.

The problem with dropping the long irons for me is that I lose the ability to play punch out recovery shots under/around trees. Due to hitting driver poorly, I have gotten quite good at running up a 4 or 5 iron on the green or at least green side. I would drop my 5 iron for a hybrid if not for  this needed usage. 6 iron is too hard to keep it low under the tree canopy.

What's the weight on that speeder hb?

I think it’s 95 or 96gr xstiff but feels very smooth but stable.

I worried about the same when I swapped my 5 iron for a hybrid, but the addition of a 19 Apex UW in the  3 iron/5 wood slot solved the issue for me.  I can flight that thing down so well it has become my go to option for punch outs and other low bullet shots.

What’s working best for me is 5 iron, then 5 and 4 hybrid  then 4 wood and driver at top of bag. My 5 hybrid (25 loft) is about 1/2 club longer than my 5 iron and appreciably higher. I play my 4 hybrid at 21 loft so gapping for me is perfect between the 5 hybrid and my 16.5 4 wood. The 5 hybrid/5 iron combo also takes care of all the creative trouble shots I hit. Been very happy with this setup. I’m in early 60s w 100-103 SS w driver.

Going to test an old GAPR Hi 5h/25* with a low launching hybrid shaft for a cheap(er) experiment. I see they made a 6h/28* too...

Has anyone played around with the length of the shaft, trimming closer to iron lengths? For me it would be a 1.25" increase from 6i to 5h. Just curious how that would affect the distance gap?

That’s why I went from 5i to 5hyb.  It will be a pretty sized distance gap.  I still cut my hybrid down by .5”.

I hit my wanted carry number from a 23deg 4i using a 24deg 5h.

Still determining the right model, but the GT2 outperforms the GT3 for this role. I also tried Taylormade, but they all spin much less as a whole. So not what I want in a 5h gapping club.

187 6i

201 5h 24

219 7w 21

Important for the 5h, the carry gap also had 105 foot apex with the right spin to attack a green.

Good stuff. Appreciate the post.

I ordered the shaft for it already and will test the gt2 and 3 Sunday and order one of them.

I can't get enough of my 6 hybrid. Dropped my 5 iron last year for a 27 degree 6 hybrid. 190 to 200 yards is a comfort zone now instead of one of the hardest yardages in the bag.

I have a 106mph driver swing and have always gotten along with hybrids well. I'm 34 fwiw.

Bag goes: driver, mini driver, 5 wood, 23 degree 4 hybrid (205 - 215), 27 degree 6 hybrid (190-200), 6 iron (175 - 185)

I'm in a similar spot. Same swing speed range and everything. (110 on Full Swing and 104 on Trackman...so 106? 108?)

I'm migrating to:

Driver, Mini, 5w, 7w, 5h?, 6-LW. I really like how the 5h was an easier swing to go 200. I'm testing a 23deg driving to compare, but the 5 hybrid numbers are oddly good. The only thing that kept me from purchasing the 5h right away was that while mishits would go about the same distance, spin would have a tendency to radically drop. Poor strikes with the 5h still beat out the 5i if I need to carry a hazard, but the poor 5i strike is often low and runs--a relatively safe miss. Where as the (less common) poor 5h strike had a much larger dispersion.

Yes - I 100% know what you mean with getting a low spin hot one with some hybrids. I recommend trying a few options to see if you can find a setup that holds spin up on most strikes. I had to go through this with the 4h spot in the past few months. Last year I was using 4h off the tee alot so getting a low spin long one was great. The ping g425 at 21 degrees was incredible for that rolling long fairway finder. This year the mini went in and I no longer look to hybrid for off the tee, so the the 425 really didn't have a spot anymore. I moved to a titelist tsr1 hybrid at 22 degrees in that spot and that significantly increased spin, stopping power and reduced dispersion over the 425.

Goodluck on what you find!

I just watched Johnny Wunder discuss his bag. He brings up quite a bit of the exact same points discussed here: losing shots on the course with a 4 & 5i and his solution is a 5 hybrid. He also says his driver plays at 165 ball speed, so no slouch in speed even though he calls himself "slow."

His bag:

Driver, 3w, 5w, 4h, 5h, 6-LW

Uses Ping hybrids at 22 and 25 degrees
