Reshafting Callaway Hawkeye

I have a Hawkeye 5 wood head that has the shaft sheared off at the hosel. I would like to put a new shaft in it. I am somewhat familiar with shafting clubs with traditional hosels but I’ve never done a bore thru head. 
 

how do I remove the shaft that’s broken off in the head? Is it the same as removing one from a normal hosel? 
how does the bore thru affect the flex or tipping of the shaft that I put in? 
 

any tips?

You likely can buy a Hawkeye 5 wd on eBay for less than a new shaft costs.  Just saying.  

 

This is not a job for the inexperienced.   You will need to drill out the shaft completely.  You epoxy the shaft in with some of it protruding thru the bottom of the head. You also need a plastic pin to plug the bottom of the shaft.  Available thru places like Golfworks.  Once cured, you cut or sand off most of the exposed shaft at the bottom.  You then grind or sand the remainder until it is flat to the sole.  You then use a finer sanding wheel or block and then a polishing wheel to get rid of the scratches left behind from all the sanding.   And oh yeah, Callaway used a special ferrule (two possibilities) for these heads and you need to get the right one.

 

You can cut the shaft to the proper angle before insertion of the shaft, but it is very difficult to get it just right and it will be a mess from that point forward.

It’s true that it’s not worth much at all but I already have a shaft and I got the head for free. 😁

it’s really more of an experiment to see if I can do it. I read somewhere that someone had success with 3d printing a ferrule for one of these. I may go that route. I have to make a golfworks order for some other things so I may just throw the required items in the cart if they are not too expensive.

I may drill out the shaft part that’s in the head to fit a driveway marker and make a whippy out of it. 🤔

 

can I extract the shaft piece with heat and a screw extractor or do I absolutely have to drill it out?

It is WAY easier to cut off the majority of the shaft and drill it out.  You can heat the head a little and while drilling, the whole shaft might spin out saving a little bit of effort.  Just order a ferrule.
